Wonderful. Stick with it Allison. You've maybe read some of us on here really encouraging poeple to abandon the auto modes and satrt taking control of what you get out of the camera. It can feel like the easy option to bang it onto Auto fro an easy life. But don't. The rewards will come once things click into place and you make the images that you want, not want the camera thinks you want.
Early Christmas presents to yourself is always a good idea. Well done to you for going for it.
So welcome to CiC. I hope you enjoy it. And i look froward to seeing some images of the kids very soon.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
G'day from down under. I have been interested in photography for years and focused mainly on black and white using a Cannon Ftb SLR with film. I recently joined the digital worl and bought an Olympus which I struggle to get my head around settings etc so mostly leave it on A(uto).
I have attached a few images for C/C.
Kind regards,
Stew

That would suggest you've previously been living elsewhere. Are you one of life's travellers? If so, you are a lucky person.

One resolution for this year is to become a better photographer
Hello all, My name is Erick and I am from Costa Rica. I am 40 yrs old.
I love to take pictures however I still need to shape my style and technic and I hope joining a forum like this can help me learn from people with more experience and skills. I have a humble Nikon d40 that I was thinking to do an upgrade however I have second thoughts because I realize it might be a great tool to keep learning. Recently I just adquired an external flash and have 2 more lenses 70-300 and a 50mm + the 18-55 mm, a wide angle attachment and some magnifiers. I would like to train my eye and have challenging projects to keep learning this great pasion. I have a 11 month daugther and I would also like to take great picture of her as she grows but in general I wish to take inspiring photos in all categories, landscapes, protraits, buildings and tell stories without words just by looking nice images.
Regards,,
Erick :)

Erick - I certainly hope that being part of this forum can help you develop your own vision and style and that it does help you develop your skills. That is certainly the main purpose of the website

That is a very sensible way of approaching the subject and it is a lesson that many people would benefit from. Too often, people who are learning rush out to buy new equipment with the idea that it will somehow make them into better photographers. People have produced wonderful images with the D40. Just because it is now an older camera in the Nikon range does not mean it is any less capable of taking wonderful pictures. How good they are is up to the photographer, not the camera.
One final point, so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Happy to join the community as have a lot of questions about photography and hope to broaden my knowldege with the help of more expeienced people.
