Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi all,
My name is David and I have become more serious about photography in the past 6 months. Seem to have a passion for birds most recently. I have plenty of subject matter here in south Florida. I am using a 60D Canon and recently acquired a 100-400 telephoto lens. Will post some of my shots on Flickr when the time is right. Any helpful comments would be much appreciated.

Hello David and welcome to CiC.

One of the best ways of learning is to subject your work to the constructive analysis of others, so that you, in turn, can study their comments and learn from them. It's a bit daunting at first, but once you take the first step you'll want to do it more and more. So, I hope we'll see some of your images on CiC.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hello everyone, I started photography with yashica many years ago then with nikon and now i've canon 5D M II. I haven't any education in photography, but i really love it. My big problem in photography is: I haven't enough knowledge or skills about light and B & W photos.

    Hi all,
I've been lurking on here for a few weeks reading the tutorials and decided to join. I've loved photography for years and finally decided to upgrade from my point and shoot. I picked up a Nikon D5100 a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it and all the info on this site is an incredible help.

Hi, my name is Becky P. I am a retired librarian.
Back in college I had taken a photography course and loved it. Over the years I took some courses in photography and Adobe Photoshop. I have had a few pictures in juried exhibitions. I basically see myself as a person in the early stages of photography.

I hope you've been able to look around CiC and have liked what's on offer. Certainly I think you will find lots of people very willing to share their considerable knowledge and experience with the aim of helping you learn and, in turn, I hope as you develop further you will feel able to help others.

I hope also that we'll see some of your images being posted up either in the competition threads or inviting comment and criticism. That can be a really powerful way of learning.

As some of you have already seen, CiC is very much a site that is about encouraging and helping people to learn and to extend their photographic knowledge and skills.

As well as the tutorials, many people on the forum will be very happy to try and help you all they can.

I hope you'll all be involved for a long tome to come.

One thing for you all to note - You've maybe seen that most of us tend to use our real names on here. It makes communication more friendly and CiC is that sort of site. If you haven't listed it as your User Name, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your User Name in all your posts. You lucky person. I'd love to do that.

First thing - A very warm welcome Doris. Thanks for signing up. I hope you enjoy being part of CiC

Second thing - I know you've given us your name in this post, but so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

And third thing - I'd say you have a camera more than able to let you get the best out of the opportunity. Do you mean camera (body) or do you mean lenses? What lens(es) do you have at the moment?

Given what you tell us you are going to be shooting, you will probably want to have a fairly broad range of options so far as focal length is concerned. For example, for wildlife, your probably going to want something that will go to at least 300mm, or even better 400mm or above. And if you're going there fairly soon, you are heading into southern hemispehere winter, so you won't have long hours of light. So you'll maybe want something pretty fast; i.e. a lens with a wide maximum aperture, so that you can get fast shutter speeds.

On the other hand, for landscape work, you will want the option of a reasonably wide-angled lens. If you have a kit lens of say 17mm or 18mm at the wide angle end, then you'd get away with that, but many people would want something even wider - down to 10mm or 11mm at the wide end, especially on a 50D.

And all of the above is not going to come in one lens. So, you'd be thinking of at least 2 lenses, possibly 3 of different zoom ranges. Of course, if you were really serious about the wildlife photography, then you might be thinking about a prime lens rather than a zoom.

So, at the end of the day it comes down to: a) how big is your budget and, b) how big are your photography ambitions and goals?
