Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi my name is Tom, I'm recently retired and received a sony a230 camera for the occasion. At first I was a little disappointed because I was planning on buying a digital when I retired and was looking at Canon and Nikon. But from all I've read the Canon and Nikon lines could have been pricey. I bought some minolta and sony lenses and have had taken some good shots, but am still learning. I have shot with a 35mm camera since the mid 60's, while in the coast guard in the south pacific from Viet Nam to Hong Kong, and then for the past 35 years of marriage, so I have a nice size box of photos. Most recently last night my son who is shooting Nikon and myself were shooting water drops and got some good results. I am still learning the various menus on this camera and cannot imagine size of the menu of a Canon or Nikon. Anyway I am looking forward to warm weather and the opportunity to get out and try some filters and these lenses.

Hello
My name is Alan and I have been interested in photography for nearly 50 years. I have seen a great many changes in that time and I have just started a photography club for our over 50s group to try to help others of my generation come to terms with the digital age.
My own photoghraphy interests are macro and wildlife. I have recently set up a hide near my local river to photograph the kingfisher and other birds that visit my feeding station.
I am looking forward to any help you can give me regarding tutorials for my group.

Alan - I'm sure people will be more than happy to help with suggestions and ideas for the group tutorial sessions. Just post up your questions in, for example, the 'General Photography Discussion' section of the forum.
But more than that, I hope all those years of experience will also be applied on here and your knowledge shared with others climbing along the learning curve.
It's great to have you here on CiC. I hope you enjoy it and are encouraged to be amongst the active members for a long time to come.

Kristl - I certainly hope (well, I'm pretty confident actually) that the advice to come will live up to your expectations and wishes.
Great to have take the plunge and put up your first post. I hope it will be the first of many.
So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hello, My name is Barb. I am from Calgary, Canada....about 86miles from the Eastern Side of the Rocky Mountains. My main interest is Landscape Photography and most of my photos are from Alberta, my home province. Here is a link to my site http://maraya.smugmug.com/. My camera of choice is a Nikon d300.
Most recently I have been pursuing photos of the Aurora and night skies here. Even though we are quite far south (51degrees) we have had some very good night time displays. I have much to learn about night time photography and long exposures.

Hi All,
Jamie here from Norfolk, UK. I have a Nikon D80 with the 18-135 kit lens (mighty fine for a kit lens) with an old 70-300mm eBay special and a fixed 50mm lens, also I have recently treated myself to an SB700 flash, which I am seeing a new quality to my pictures. I am looking to gain advice and help to help me stay away from the auto button.
Regards,
Jamie

Hello Jamie and thanks for joining CiC.
Yep, we send round the heavy-mob to anyone still using the auto button after a few weeks of being involved on CiC!
I know it's very easy to go top it when you can't be bothered doing all that thinking and working out. But, persevere. You will gain the benefit in the not-too-distant future. But it is all about practice and more practice.
And CiC is a place where you will get support and advice with your learning. So please do get involved.

Problem is Mark that there is nothing to refer to, so diagnosing what went wrong is a bit of a problem.
But the important thing is - you're here now. And it's great to have you on board.
I don't know if you've been looking in to CiC before signing up, but it very much a forum for learning and development, with people more than willing to share knowledge and experience. So, whether you're someone who considers himself a beginner who wants to mainly learn from others, or an experienced 'tog who can help others, or a bit of both, yo are very welcome and I hope you enjoy being involved.

Hi, I'm Kari from London. For my birthday (isn't til May) my husband got me a new camera. I've always wanted an EOS and now I have one. So... either my photos will improve greatly or it wasn't the camera's fault if they didn't look great! LOL
Also trying to avoid the almighty auto button! Glad to be here!
