Marc - Hello and welcome, and I'm very glad to read that you've decided that photography is to be your primary hobby. I hope that being part of this forum can help you develop that interest further and contribute to your ongoing learning and development.

Please do join in the discussions and, of course, post some images up for comment. It's one of the best ways to learn.

In terms of seeking comment and criticism, Frank Millar, one of the members, recently posted a very helpful message to help people think about what to ask when seeking comments. Frank wrote:-

"Now that you’ve joined CiC, have images you want to share, and are eager to learn how to improve, you’ll want to know HOW and WHERE to post your images.

HOW - If you are new to CiC or are having any difficulty posting your images to this forum, please check out our HELP THREAD: How can I post images here?

WHERE – At the top of the main web page, click the Forum button and under Photo Commentary & Competitions, select the most appropriate of these two critique forums (not here); People & Pets, or Nature & Architecture (and anything else).

At the top of the selected Forum, click the + Post New Thread button to create your new thread.

Getting Feedback - To receive the most effective feedback, geared to your level of interest and expertise, please consider the following:

When you post an image for which you want feedback that goes beyond 'that's a nice picture', please tell us a bit about what you were trying to accomplish when you took the image.

Are you interested in how to get the best from your camera settings? Or perhaps some technical aspect such as depth of field, contrast, focus, motion blur, white balance, details in shadows, blown highlights, etc.

Perhaps you are concentrating on composition where subject matter, level horizon, the use of lines, colours, shapes, are important.

Perhaps you are happy with the initial image and are more interested in post processing; cloning, cropping, correcting parallax, merging images, panoramas, focus stacking or any other multitude of retouching techniques.

Maybe you are a beginner and just want to know a few basic ideas on how to improve a snapshot.

The hardest post to provide effective feedback for is one that has multiple diverse images. A single image per post is preferred but on occasion asking for which image is best of several of the same subject can be effectively responded to as well.

Almost any image posted for critique can have a lot of suggested changes ranging from the commonly accepted norms for any image all the way to personal preferences that may or may not fit your style. In the end, it is what YOU want the image to be that is most important so feel free to choose from the suggested alternatives.

Our goal is to provide you with one or two improvements for each image that you can effectively use to move the image in the direction you want it to take. If we provide too many suggestions for improvements the learning process can become muddled and confusing so it is best to sharpen your technique on only one or two aspects at a time, then move on to reshoot, repost, and look for more feedback.

When you post your image, please let us know, where appropriate:

    1. What you are trying to accomplish

    2. What you did to move toward that goal

    3. What aspect of the image you would like to see improved, and

    4. What you feel your skill level is in the area you are seeking to improve.

This will help us to provide you with the best possible feedback for your image and learning experience."

Hi Everyone - I am Judy from Scottsdale, AZ. I am a new member to CiC as I just join today after a friend recommend this site. I have been interested in photography ever since I was a child, but I did not have the money to buy a good camera. Last year, I got that opportunity and bought myself a Canon EOS Rebel T1i. I love my camera. I joined this forum to share my work and learn more about photography.

    Hello and welcome to CiC.

To edit profile you go to 'Forum Actions' on the menu bar at the top of the page and choose 'Edit Profile'. The go to the left hand side bar and scroll down to 'My Settings'. There you have a choice of options for editing.

Some of these options only kick in after you have made 5, or maybe in some cases, 10 posts onto CiC. If you have any problems, just call out.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy being part of CiC and that it does contribute to your learning and development.

    Hello,
I'm Bob, an amateur at lots of things--winemaking, woodworking, website building, home video-making, and photography. In the latter, I enjoy nature photography the most--flowers, animals, landscape--but also enjoy photographing people, especially my three very active grandsons as they play baseball, ride bikes, skateboards and surfboards. I've had Pentax and Canon SLR film cameras, but now use a canon SX 30 IS 'point and shoot' and just noticed this morning that I have 21,000+ photos in my Aperture library! I'm looking forward to learning how to make better use of my camera in composing, getting sharper, better lit, more interesting photos.

Hello you folks that have joined up and posted a message here since Lisa. That is:

Lisa - If you have any questions, please just do call out

Neil - I'm still looking for the perfect photo as well!

Bob - Bob, I assume the Username comes from the grapes you grow for your winemaking - drinking it is my other hobby!

Sumitha - What camera have you got?

Andy - I'm just up the M90 motorway from you. By the way, so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Great to have you all here. I hope each of you enjoys being a part of CiC and that it contributes to your ongoing photographic learning and development.

Hi. My name is Terry Breheny, and I live in Nottingham. I am now retired and have decided to get more involved with photography. I am a memeber of the local camera club which gives me an opportunity to view professionals work and to enter into club competitions. I am also doing an online course, so putting it all together, I am beginning to understand this hobby a lot more.

Terry - Delighted you've decided to join up to CiC. I certainly hope that being part of the forum can add to what you get from membership of the club so far as learning is concerned. What you will find here are lots of people very willing to share knowledge and experience.

If you prefer being addressed as Terry, then you migth want to go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hi, I'm Andy. I live on the sunny coast of East Sussex in the UK. My love of photography has come about from being a keen fisherman and spending a lot of time in the countryside and around water. Staying still and quite near a lake for a period of time lets you see all manner of wildlife come wandering by and I hope my photgraphy will one day be able to portray some of this.

I am very much a beginner, but am keen to learn. I enjoy taking pictures of various subjects at the moment while on this steep learning curve but mostly enjoy landscapes and general wildlife pictures.

This forum looks great and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in

Andy - I certainly hope that you will get stuck in. I think what you'll find here is a forum that encourages people of all levels and experience to get involved in the knowledge that they are not going to be dismissed because they 'should know the answers' as, I understand, happens on some forums.

So, a warm welcome and I hope you will feel able to start asking questions, posting images etc.
