Mary - I'm delighted you stumbled upon us.
Sean (McQ) the site owner actually is based in California. The site name comes from the fact that he created it whilst studying at Cambridge University in England. That's why, despite being an American, Sean used the UK spelling of 'colour' in the website name.
Anyway, great to have you here. I hope you enjoy being part of the forum and that you find that it helps you to develop your photographic knowledge and skills.

Hi all,
I have recently joined this amazing site where I hope to fine tune my style and ideas. My Canon EOS 400D never lets me down but my composition, focal length, shutter speeds etc need lots of attention.

Pattie from the Highlands, near Victoria, B.C., Canada. I found this site by accident and am excited about the opportunities it provides for learning about photography, my newest passion. I've wanted to take up photography for a long time, but it wasn't until I got my first DSLR (Canon EOS Rebel T2i) that it became feasible. I've spent the last year and a bit learning by trial and error, with some success and a whole lot of realizing just how much I have to learn! Where I live is a beautiful rural area, mostly in its mountainous, wooded natural state, so I've been concentrating on taking pictures of what's all around me — wildflowers, moss, bugs and critters, frost in the fall and sunlight in summer; I love how getting out with my camera has made me look at everything more closely and in new ways, and how the pictures I take prompt me to find out about my subjects.
The posts I've looked at on this thread haven't had photos attached, but the Welcome Thread introduction says I can post one photo to demonstrate my photographic style. I would love to share a shot I was in the right place at the right time for last summer, one of those that makes a novice think that there's hope for her yet. Thanks for the invitation!

Hello Gary and welcome.
I hope you find CiC to your liking. What I think you will find is a forum where you don't get the sort of aggressive language that you get on some other fora and where people sek to help others no matter what their levels of knowledge and skille. So as well as, hopefully, learning, I look forward to you putting your experience at the disposal of others in order to help them along the learning curve.
You don't say where you are. If you wish, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your location so that it shows up alongside all your posts, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

I think we can agree that that is most definitely the case. Nice one.
Welcome Pattie. Great to have you here.
By the way, your image posted as a thumbnail rather than being embedded within the message. To get the final step in the process that would have done that, please do have a read through the first of these threads. And, then, to get the best out of seeking comments from others on your images, have a read of the second one:

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello,
My name's Alan, I'm living in the Highlands of Scotland. Most of my time is taken up with Fly Fishing. I tie flies commercially and am looking into setting up a fishing guiding service.
Photography wise I've been at this a while. Certainly before the digital age. Learned film at night school and did a C&G general photography and photographic assistants in the early 80's. Back in those days I used mostly medium format, with the occasional use of 4x5 and 10x8 and of course 35mm.
It is only about 7 years since I came to digital. Did an NCFE evening class in digital imaging to get me going. More recently completed the OU's T189 Digital Imaging unit.
Equipment is currently two rather well used D70 SLR's. Which I am looking to upgrade as soon as funds permit. With various lenses, but a Sigma 18 - 250 OS has been an almost perminant fixture on one since I got it.
Most of my photography tends to be this sort of thing.

Though when time and inclination permit I like to do this sort of thing.

Cheers,
Alan

There are many people on this forum who will be very willing to offer advice and guidance in order to help you, so please do ask any questions that you have.
Thank you Donald, I got Canon 500D with 18-55 mm plus 70-300mm lenses; i know that the last lens doesn't have very good reviews, but I bought this kit at a good price. It's an entry level but that is how I learn best, with baby steps :). And if I can achieve good photos with this camera it will be easy to achieve great photos with the higher level cameras in the future :)

Welcome Alan. Where are you? I arrived here in darkest Perthshire by way of Lochaber, Muir of Ord and Culloden - but that was a few years ago now.

The most important thing to remember that the most crucial element in the making of great images is the person behind the camera. So, you can move onto higher specification lenses, if you wish, in the future. What you have got now is more than capable of helping you make wonderful pictures. I look forward to seeing some of them seen on the forum.

Hi, my name is Michiel. I am 32 years old and from the Netherlands. Photography is a hobby of mine. I've been practicing and studying information on the internet for quite a bit. I also have quite a few photos on DeviantArt with which I am kind of happy. But I am not happy yet with the quality. I stumbled upon this site and it looks like a great resource to learn more and ask specific questions and advice. And also to learn from others of course.
Looking forward to my experience here!
Michiel
