Hi. My name is Jan from Home Hill North Queensland, Australia. I started with a kit lens DSLR a few years ago to take bird photos, and have upgraded to a Canon 7D and also upgraded my lens. Still not very good taking photos of birds, but thoroughly enjoying it all. Took over 300 photos of birds over the past few days, so hoping I have a few keepers. Need to learn software more though.

Yes thank you Donald,

The South pole is a unique place on this planet. The sun rises and sets only once on the equinoxes. It rises on September 21 and sets on March 21. Having said that a very slight bit of sunlight is starting to be visible on the horizon right now, in fact I just got back in from taking a few pictures of it!! We have the chance to breathe the cleanest air on the planet and therefore the sky is also the clearest. Combined with the fact that we sit at an altitude of over 2800 meters above sea level, the starry skies and auroras are absolutely stunning. Having said that a very slight bit of sunlight is starting to be visible on the horizon right now, in fact I just got back in from taking a few pictures of it!! Thanks for the warm welcome Donald.

Hello everyone!

I am Shiva from Chennai, India. I have always been interested in photography but so far never took it to any level beyond being the "unofficial" photographer during family get-togethers and functions. My interest started when I got my first camera about 5 years ago, the Nikon Coolpix L11, which I loved at that time. Once I handled my cousin's DSLR camera a few months back, my thirst to learn and experiment more increased and I ended up finding this wonderful forum. I have learnt a lot from the excellent tutorials here. And just last month, I upgraded my camera to the Nikon D5100!

I hope to learn more as I get more involved with CiC

Sorry to be so long in replying, had a very busy weekend.
Yes, my mobility is very limited, so a location shoot has to be first organized with my wife, the driver. I am very much tied to house, garden, immediate locality and my 2 beautiful granddaughters for my photography. This does not detract from my love and enjoyment of photography.
I very much agree with the perception sharing ideas can only improve your skills. I have just completed a short course on digital photography through the Open University and I think I learnt more, especially editing, through the course assignments then sharing ideas through the online forums with other course members, that in the last 10 years of trial and error photography.

My first camera was a simple cyber digital sony, then I got canon 60D and now I just bought canon 5D mark3 . Im not sure how good Im at this, but I will never stop learning about photography to be better. This site is really good help, thank you guys.

Hi. My name is Susana and I live in Ontario, Canada. I have been reading through the tutorials on the website for the past few days and have now decided to join the forum to see what I can learn here. I am an advanced beginner and am interested in eventually shooting portraits (though sometimes I fear it's too late to get into photography professionally as I'm about to turn 49!). In the meantime I do a bit of everything, trying to learn every technique I can. At this point I'm starting to build my kit in a more serious way. I started out shooting with a 3 megapixel point and shoot and slowly started upgrading as I learned more and felt more comfortable experimenting. I am currently shooting with a Canon EOS 40D and I am learning quite a bit still. I recently purchased a course that I am waiting for in the mail and will also be enrolling in a local class tomorrow, if I manage to get in before the class fills up. As you might notice, an issue for me is I'm always in learning mode and am finding it difficult to switch to ready mode where I can say with confidence "I am a photographer." I would be interested to know if anyone else has faced that fear and how they handled it.

Hello Susana and welcome to CiC.

As you might notice, an issue for me is I'm always in learning mode and am finding it difficult to switch to ready mode where I can say with confidence "I am a photographer."

Please don't ever switch. The real photographer will forever be in learning mode. Sure, there are things you want to learn and then just consign to the memory bank. But then there is the next thing to learn.

The fact is that you are a photographer. You think about what you're doing, you study and learn. You're not just snapping away indiscriminately. You might want to be a better photographer (I hope you always will). But you are one. The images on your website testify to that.

It always feels as if others know more and can do things better. But remember, every person on this forum whose work you might admire was once at exactly the same place as you are now at on the learning curve.

If you do want to learn more about portraiture, you could do no better than start by studying the series of lessons that Colin (Southern) developed on here some time ago. Just click on this School of Portraiture - Links to Lessons 1 through 8.

It's great to have you here and I hope you enjoy it.

I'm Les in Saigon. I love photography but suffer from zero artistic genes. mainly this means that I don't have an "eye" for a good picture. So, usually, I have to choose a subject that is strong and interesting rather than something simple. I mainly like to photograph buildings and bridges that have some history. I do some sports photography, mainly amateur football. I am enjoying learning HDR techniques but friends say my HDR images are too weird!

Hello, Everyone:
I'm Jim from San Jose, California, USA. I photograph many subjects but seem to gravitate toward landscape photography. My current goals are to raise my technical proficiency. In particular, how do I ensure razor sharp focus (currently trying to understand and integrate hyperfocal distance and defraction limits in setting up shots), and color balance from capture through printing.

CiC gained my repeated visits because the website design is so visually appealing; the information is presented so clearly; and each tutorial provides such concise, densely packed knowledge. I look forward to discussing these topics on this forum.

The tools I employ are: Canon 5DmkII; Lightroom 4; Photoshop 6; an Epson R3000 printer and DataColor Spyder3 Studio.
