That's a lot of experience there, Ric, that I hope you will make available to others through the advice and guidance that you can give to them here on CiC. I hope, too, that you will continue on the journey of developing your knowledge and skills as you become more involved in the life of the forum.
You don't say where you are. If you wish, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your location so that it shows up alongside all your posts, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hi I'm from Johannesburg, South Africa and have only been taking photo's since Dec. 2011. I have a Canon EOS1100D with various lens. I go on many walks in and around my city as I love street photography.

Hello, my name's Evonne. I live in Dundee, Scotland. I got a Canon 600D a few months ago and have been learning how to use it on Manual. I love photographs of people captured in the moment, rather than posed portraits. My 3 year old nephew is my favourite muse but he's often too quick for me to change my camera settings :D

Hey. Evonne. Although I live in Glenfarg, I work in Dundee (in the new Dundee House on North Lindsay Street). That's right, 'fur the cooncil'.
If you want to see my efforts with the Tay Bridge, you can click here.

Hello, thank you for the warm welcome! I know exactly where Dundee House is, I'm a nursery teacher working not very far from there.
Your Tay Bridge photos are brilliant. Certainly better than my effort

Hi, another new member here to say hello, I love looking photos and attempting them myself, I am slowly gaining an understanding. I really like the feel of this website and going to enjoy having a look around. I have an LX3 and a canon 550d with the kit lens, a 50 prime and an old 75-300 canon lens that can only be used in manual.

Hi ALL: My name is Marty, I live in Central New York. For the last 4 years I've been photographing unknown waterfalls in surrounding areas. Most of them are on private property, and I get permission from owners to take pictures there. A lot of owners do not want locations revealed to protect their land. Weekends are the only time I get out to take pictures. I use a Nikon L100 camera, upgrading to a newer one soon. Have a nice day!!

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello Everybody,
I am a brand new beginner in photography in general. My mom used to do photography when I was a young child so I like to think she is a bit responsible for driving my interest towards this artistic field. Been "messing" since long ago, but very very sporadically with photo, never really getting to understand nuts & bolts until last year I got married and finally my wife got me my first DSLR, which made me very very happy and drove me to jump more deeply in this creative and liberating pool :).
So I am already trapped by this world of shades and fantasy, getting serious with it, but not (yet) to the point of pretending to be a part of the extensive professional field (although, it could be a dream to unite both this field with monetary incomes haha)... I'm going slowly, at my own pace, mostly enjoying with practice rather than getting overwhelmed by techniques, rules, processes... I am firstly exploring aesthetics, artistic styles and essays to end up defining my own maybe and then as needed refer to online sources to learn more.
I like "surrealism" and protraiture mostly, looking to approach a very "painterly" feeling inmy pictures but also like the rest: documentary, nature & travel, macro, etc...
As I have very humble economic means, I can't afford this or that course right now so it has been a MAJOR SURPRISE, and still am in awe to have found out altruist and gentle people putting out this wonderful site... I just could go on and on, and still have a hard time finding words to describe how gratefull I am to have the chance to learn about every aspect of photography FOR FREE, and in an extremely easy, clean, organized fashion!!
My name is Gabriel, I currently live in Spain.
Thanks a million for your extensive hard work so we can learn for free!!!

I think that is an extremely sensible and appropriate way in which to approach your learning. I think you are correct in stating that exploring aesthetics, artistic styles and essays is the appropriate way to develop. I feel that some people start by seeking to understand all the technicalities and do not spend time thinking about aesthetics.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
thanks a lot Donald,
Well it's not really a choice but a necessity as I am quite an patience lacking obsessive maniac hahahah...In fact this photographic "adventure" I got into is being also a great therapy!
cheers!

Hello everyone!
My name is Irina and I'm a newcomer to photography. What prompted my interest was the fact that I was given a DSLR for my birthday a few months ago  which was a rather surprising gift (Canon 550d, with a kit lens 18-55mm). I decided to take full advantage of this wonderful gift and took a beginner's course, which really opened my eyes.
So I'm a complete beginner, and I'm looking forward to expanding my knowledge by means of this wonderful site. :) I'm especially interested in street photography and portraiture, but since I'm new to the field, I suppose I might change my priorities in the future.
Cheers,
Irina

Hi Denny,
welcome to CiC, it's great to have you with us.
Do you still shoot any film or are you completely digita now? I have very limited knowledge of film, but certainly think at some time in the future would like to give it a go.
I look forward to seeing your work and speaking to you again.

Hi my name is Sam I am new to this site I thought I would try it and see what I might learn from others that have been in photography. I have a nikon d60 and seem to be doing a decent job. Although I would love to advance from a rookie to a skillfull photogragher. I am in my early 40s and love taking pictures when I can. I love photoshop and just got my first lightroom program about a week ago! (lightroom 4.1) I really have enjoyed it so far. I take alot of pictures of my grandkids and family and of other odds in end stuff. I am looking foward to learning more about Photography...
