Hello Satush and welcome to CiC. Thank you for joining.

In relation to your point about shooting modes, you may be interested to read this thread, that is currently live on the forum.

As for aperture settings - If you purchase a f3.5 - f4.5 lens what this means is that the maximum aperture you can achieve at the shorter focal lengths of the lens, is f3.5. At the longer focal lengths, the maximum aperture will adjust to f4.5. That is because of the way the lens is built.

If you want to shoot something at f2.8, then you need a lens on which the maximum aperture is f2.8. You cannot shoot at f2.8 with a lens on which the maximum aperture is f3.5.

If you have looked at equipment, you will also see that there are zoom lenses that just say, for example, f2.8, not f2.8 - f(something else). That means that you can achieve maximum aperture of f2.8 throughout the entire zoom range of the lens. And you will also notice that they are much more expensive. It is all about the technology used and the cost involved in building such equipment.

So, to summarise, the name of the lens (70-200, f3.5 - f.4.5) tells you the zoom range of the lens and the maximum apertures you will be able to achieve with it.

By the way, if you wish, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your location so that it shows up alongside all your posts, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hello everyone, I'm Deeparnak from India, but I have been staying in South Africa since last year.
My tryst with Photography is strange, and it sometimes even surprises me. Frankly speaking, I had no prior exposure to serious photography, but I always had the temptation to delve into it. Be it due to the lack of proper equipment, or time, for that matter, I never took the leap. But of late, I started studying into the technicalities of photography, because it appealed to the engineer in me, and I found myself deeply in love with the art itself! Perhaps that was the boost that I was waiting for. I borrowed a friends camera for 2 weeks and started experimenting with day-to-day subjects, and needless to say, I realized what I had missed out all these years!

Right now, I'm still looking for advice on what is the best equipment to start learning.

Welcome Deeparnak and thank you for joining CiC. I hope it will be source of both inspiration and education for you as you develop your interest in photography.

As for where to start, one of the most important considerations will be the size of your budget. Photography can become an expensive hobby.

The other factor to consider is that if you wish to invest in DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera technology, then you should think about it in terms of investing in a system, not just a camera. As your interest, knowledge and skills develop, you will want to add to/upgrade your equipment in order to extend the range of photographic options available to you. If you have started off by buying Canon, or Nikon, or Sony, etc, then you will want to stay with that brand as changing everything for another brand will be very expensive.

You will find many good-natured (and some not so good natured) debates amongst, for example, Canon and Nikon owners as to which is 'best'. The truth is that for us enthusiasts, all modern camera equipment is more than capable of helping us produce high quality pictures. In other words, one brand is as good as another. There will be differences that some professionals and technophiles will consider extremely important, but for 99% of us who consider ourselves serious amateurs, the differences are negligible.

You should acquaint your self with the range of cameras available and then start to compile a short list based on budget and personal preference.

Hello. My name is Lauren Carcioppolo. I am 47 years old and have been scrapbooking and keeping photos and memory books for over 24 years. I have always had an interest in photograhy, but never really pursued it because I was busy raising a family. I have posted four of my favorite pictures, I'm still very insecure and do what I do soley as a hobby. My boyfriend, co-workers, friends and family are my best source of encouragement and support. I absolutely love this website and enjoy reading everyones posts and viewing some beautiful photos.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hello everybody,

I'm Andreas from Germany, registered here to improve my English and to find a solution for my DSLR Canon EOS 1100d which is my beginning to digital Photography.
I just bought this Camera (used on ebay) and would like to check wether the seller told me the truth about the pics he took.

So my first question to find out is: if anybody found a way to extract the pic number / shutter count of this 1100D ?!

My knowledge is: The EOS 1100d doesn't write the number in the jpg EXIF information and is not compatible to the astrojargon.net-tool which shows many EOS-Types numbers (e.g. 1000d).

I would be very happy, when anybody could help me.

    Best regards from Essen, Germany,

    Andreas

    Hi
I'm not only new to Cambridge in colour, I'm new to posting on forums. So apologies in advance if I do anything wrong. I'm a keen amateur with aspirations to earning some monies from doing something I enjoy, however, my main aims to enjoy photography and improve my techniques.

I've been interested in photography for years, but I have only had the opportunity to become serious about it in the last 3 or 4 years, over which time I have built up a reasonable portfolio. My main aim in joining cambridge in colour is to get some honest and critical feedback about my work.

I have no specific interests in terms of subject matter but I do tend to set myself a subject when I go out photographing. At the moment, one area I would like to do more is photographing people, both portrait and street shoting.

I've attached a photo that I took some time ago. Please feel free to critic it both in terms of it's technical and asthetic merits, I would very much appreciate the feedback.

    regards
    Clive

My name is Michael. I live in Columbus, OHIO. My passions include playing traditional acoustic instruments (guitar, mandolin, dobro, mt dulcimer etc) on my church praise team, playing eclectic country/bluegrass/rock music with my friends, writing, dogs, instrument restoration & repair, building 18th century weapons, firearms and other stuff. I have been intrigued by photography most of my life. I've never had any instruction so i'm a newby when it comes to the technical aspects. I've always taken tons of photos so I'm fairly intuitive and experienced in composition but am severely limited by my reliance on the automatic setting on my Canon Rebel XTi w/ Tamron18-200mm XR DiII lens. I'm very aware that I'm barely scratching the surface of the capabilities of my camera. At age 56 & having very recently married my long lost high school sweetheart (please bare with me, this is relevant) after a 36 year separation, I'm currently re-inventing myself as a real estate agent. Tammie and I love spending all our time together and she is also passionate and gifted picture taker. It's a very long, hard, did I mention LONG road getting a new real estate brand up and running. To pay our bills and take advantage of a perceived opportunity as an insider in the industry, My wife and I are preparing to start a photography business. As soon as we roll it out, we'll be hired by other agents to access their listings, take all the marketing photographs and upload them to MLS (multiple listing service). This could be shooting interior and exteriors of houses "as is" or utilizing limited "photo-shoot staging" where we would arrange furniture, curtains, accessories etc for maximum photographic impact. My main photographic goals at this time are to learn my camera while shooting exciting architectural shots. I'm talking about whatever it takes: special lighting, depth of field techniques, editing etc, to make our photographs stand out above the rest of the images on MLS. Does anyone have any advise where a beginner could start to produce the best architectural photos?? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi there.

My name is Warrick and I live in Gloucestershire, originally from New Zealand. Started photography when I was about 14 and ending up doing photography in school. In those days we used the OM1 and 10's My first SLR was a Canon EOS 630. After getting married about 10 years ago serious photography took a back seat. The marriage didn't last so I am now back in to Photography in a big way. I mainly focus on Street, landscape and architectural photography.
I have my photos up on 500px.com/wmoore and Google + as well

Hope I can learn more here and help as well.

    Warrick.
