    Hi Mikey,
    Welcome to CiC from me.
I agree it's a great feeling when you get that special feeling of achievement, when a photograph works out exactly as you intended it to.
You’re a brave man taking on a Wedding; I’ve not built up the courage to cover one myself.
I look forward to seeing your pictures.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hello all.

I was so fortunate to stumble across this site in my search for knowledge, so... Here I am. I've "always" liked taking pictures, but it wasn't until I got my first DSLR in June 2010 that it really took off. It was a Canon EOS 550D. Later I've added a new lens and a speedlite and a couple of radiotriggers, a softbox and an umbrella with stand to the equipment. The latter has something to do with my interest for landscape photography turning into an interest for portraiture. It's always nice to have a main subject in addition to the beautiful background/landscape. I've ploughed through lots of web sites and books to try to become a better photographer, to be able to add that little extra something to my pictures.

    Best regards

    Stig M.

You did, Deanie. Well done. Great to have you here.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Why not take a few minutes to briefly introduce yourself as a new member, but please do not post images for comment in this thread - it's just for introductions. You are welcome to post one image to demonstrate your photography style.

It can be confusing joining a new forum. The following information may help you in getting established here. We know you want to get started, but reading this will help you get started properly.

POSTING IMAGES - For technical advice on posting photos, please read this excellent guide How can I post images here? It tells you all you need to know.

VIEWING IMAGES - If you are looking for help on viewing images on this site then try here.

YOUR WEBSITE - If you have your own photo website or Flickr page you may put a link to it in your forum signature (see mine below for example). You can also introduce other members to your site in This thread.

LOCATION - Put yourself on our members map on Google. But please check the security aspects when you do this CiC Google map

CONDUCT - The general emphasis here is on support and learning. To do that, we often give detailed criticism on shots, where people have asked for it. We always try to do that in a fair, polite, and balanced manner. We also have a lot of fun on here, making humorous comments with one another. But again, it's nearly always done in a friendly manner, softened with the use of smilies.

If you follow the above guidelines you won't go far wrong. We rarely have a problem with things that are said on-line. However, the Admin/Mod group monitor all activity on this site, and any inappropriate comment will be removed or edited. We urge all new members to read the Code of Conduct FAQ.

NAMES - It's more friendly if you put your first name in your profile so that it appears on your posts. Select 'forum action/edit profile' from the menu at the top of the page. 'Real name' is at the bottom of the page. We suggest that for security reasons you only use your first name.

TUTORIALS - Try our famous tutorials, especially if you have a specific or general technical question. See the menu at the top of the page.

POSTING - Just start a new thread to ask a new question/start a discussion/post your images, but please give some thought to starting it in the correct section. Or just reply to existing threads to join in with a discussion that is in progress. If you are doubtful about posting your work, then please read this Posting image for comment and criticism The FAQ (on menu above) will give you general assistance if you have difficulty FAQ forum usage

Still stuck? Don't worry, just send a PM (Personal Message) to one of the Admin/Mods. You can find them here Mods To get to this list normally, select 'quick links/view forum Moderators'. As you move your mouse over a name a 'PM' button will appear. Click it for the Mod you want and send your PM.

And that's how it should always be. If it stops becoming fun, then you don't learn so much or as well.

Great to have you here, Sandy. I hope you enjoy it. CiC is very much about learning, so please do get involved with questions etc.

Hello all! My name is Nicole, I am from a small town in Ontario, Canada and I am a newbie to the photography world. I have had a great respect and admiration for photography for quite a few years now, but I'll be honest and say that what started this new obsession was getting a "nice camera" to take our own family pictures. Have we taken that picture yet? No.. and that was over a year ago! :-) I am having a great time learning. I now have a Canon T3i with 4 different lenses and a few filters to boot. My hubby likes to indulge me, what can I say? ;-) I also like to chat, can you tell. Anyhow, I love this website and all it has to offer. If I ever have a question about something this site always has the answer. So, thank you!

    See you around!

    Faizan

I'm very glad that you have chosen CiC to be the forum into which you first upload your pictures.

As well as posting your images into an album and in order to encourage fellow members to comment on your work, you will find it more helpful if you post selected images into a thread here on the forum.

I hope you enjoy being part of the forum.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

My name is Barry Perhamsky, and do I love photography!!! I first became interested at the age of 5. My father was given a poliroid instant picture camera (the style you pull out, wait 60 seconds, then peel apart) for his birthday. That summer, he decided to buy a pack of film and take some pictures in the back yard. My father gave me the camera to take a picture of him, my mom and sister. I still temember the shot. They sat on the air conditioner.

When I was 10 and 11, I went to this summer camp, where one of the activities was photography. They gave us these little plastic cameras with a drop in cartrage. I think there were 10 shots. They explained how to use the camera...."don't take a picture of your finger!!!" So we went around the camp photographing things. I think I took a picture of someone diving into the pool. The following week we developed the film. The week after that, we made contacts from just one single picture; 10 in all. Then the last week of camp, we made enlargements of 1 or 2 of the shots we liked the best.

I can't explain how my interest grew from there, but when I was 17, my father gave me his RETINA IIIc 35mm rangefinder camera. I didn't know he had it. He kept it hidden in his basement office. He took it out to photograph a picture from a book for a friend. He did it on the diningroom table. However though, the picture didn't come out, everything was bad. Of course, it was a rangefinder. I asked him what all the numbers were, but he couldn't answer me, so I went to the library and found out about F/stops and Shutter speeds. There was also this thing called depth of field. It had a build on the side exposure meter. When I got the camera, I remember shooting with only slides. I photographed these antique cars. I had 2 enlarged to a 5 x 7 prints.

From there I bought a beginner's developing kit. It had these little 3 1/2 x 5 inch trays. The enlarger was this long plastic thing that looked somewhat like a slide projector. You could only make one size, 3 1/2 x 5.

My next camera was a Canon AT1 match needle. I payed $250 Brand spanking new.

Next I took a weekend brginners developing course on Saturday at an art college in my town of Baltimore. They gave us assinments like dominate characteristics, self portrait, etc.

So now I knew alot about photography. The same summer camp I went to as a kid, was looking for a photography instructor. Well I got the job. Only $300 for the entire summer, but I had axcess to a darkroom, food, and a place to sleep.

The camp's director liked my pictures, and his secratary's son was being Bar Mitzvahed, so he recomended me to take the shots, I agreed. It was a small affair (only 40 people). I didn't even have a flash, nor did I really know how to use one...well not really anyway. But I did understand how to use the automatic setting 3-15 feet on f/8, 15-30 F/4, and 30-40 at f/2.8. So 2 days before the affair, I walked doen to the camera shop and bought a flash and bracket. I think I spent $75 total. With the pistol grip bracket, lens hood and shutter cable, the camera was dressed up. Besides, I needed the bracket for better lighting. That I knew.

I made 15 5 x 7's with a small album. I was suprised, the shots came out pretty good.
