Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi all....don't know if this is the correct place to put this???? A tad challenged!!
I am Clive, from the sunny East Coast of South Africa, some 25kms south of Durban, with beaches a short 5 minutes away.
I, and my whole family, have been keen photographers for years, and I only took up the hobby again about 5 years ago, after a long lay-off. Started with a Sony DSC H50 Bridge, then Canon 550D which I used for a couple of years, and have just invested in a 5D Mk lll about a month ago. Still getting used to it, and the lenses.....do mostly sea and landscapes, with wildlife also about 35kms up the road. Am looking forward to be being here.

Clive -You've got the correct place. Well done. great to have you here.
"Beaches a short 5 minutes away" Harrumph! For a northern European who had to start scraping ice from the windscreen of my car last weekend, that makes me very jealous!
Congratulations on the 5D.
I hope you enjoy being part of CiC. It's the sort of forum where people to take time to try and help through comment, advice, suggestions and in which supporting others in their learning is what it's about.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello all, This is Brian an Englishman who has lived in South Africa for 44 years. I have recently returned to photography and joined a club in Randburg Gauteng. The big decision was taken last week to purchase a Nikon D600. I share lenses with my son so bought a tokina 16-28 f2.8 to go into the joint bag. We both enjoy wildlife photography and have glass for that but lacked a decent wide angle lense. this site has been an inspiration to me over the last couple of months. Hoping to learn and enjoy even more from the members over the years.

Oh, you lucky person. If there was anywhere else I could live and work in Scotland, it would be Orkney. I love it. Been (only for holidays) many, many times.
Great to have you here Mark.
As to your question. I think you're right. That is not the camera with which to really do long-exposure stuff. I don't know the camera, but I was just having a look at some of the review information online. If I understand it correctly, I think the slowest shutter speed you can get is 4 seconds. For long exposure you're really wanting to get equipment that will allow for 'B' (Bulb) settings on the shutter. These allow you to then get into exposures of many minutes and even longer.
The other way of getting long exposure images is to take lots and lots of images at, say 4 seconds, and then stack them, but you need the software to do that on your computer. So, for example, if you take 100 x 4 second images of a scene and stack them, you have a one 400-second long exposure. Of course, you also need a tripod that's going to make sure the camera doesn't move.
So, you might want to think about the long-exposure issue. That doesn't mean that that camera cannot give you very high quality images and with which you can learn a huge amount about photography. It does mean that some of your options are cut out.
Hope that helps.
By the way, the last number of 'goodness-knows-how-many' times we've been over, we've rented a cottage at Holm Farm near Stromness. Of the islands (other than Mainland), I think my favourite is Westray. Spent a week there a few years back.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello Brian - Welcome to the club! I am a South African living in this green and gentle land. I know Randburg well. I wish you well with the Nikon D600, by all accounts it's a great camera. I shudder to think what you paid in SA!
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi G, well may you shudder! a few months back I took on a second job for a couple of months. It nearly creased me as I am not so young anymore but the lure of a new camera kept me going. There was no mention of the D600 then, so when it came out it was just for me!

Vipin - Hello and welcome to CiC. Thank you for joining.
Congratulations on your purchase of the D5100. I am sure you will find it a superb tool that will help you develop your photographic skills. I hope, too, that you find this forum a useful resource in your learning. There are always people very willing to help in answering questions, offering advice, etc.
I think your question about street photography is one that all of us face. Street photography is something that does require a lot of confidence and willingness to be challenged by people who may be unhappy about having their photograph taken. There area couple of people on CiC who are very, very good at it. 'Dubaiphil' is a very active member of the forum at the moment and he has been posting many images of people in Dubai. 'Jiro', has also developed a great ability in street photography, although he has not been posting on the forum for a while. Have a look at some of the stuff they post. For example, click here to see one of Phil's images.
Finally, and if you wish, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your location so that it shows up alongside all your posts, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi.
I am from South Africa.
I've always had an interest in photography. I've used some 'point-and-shoot' digital cameras in the past, but after some research, I recently bought a Canon 1100D DSLR camera.
I must compliment this site on its user friendliness and helpful hints - I am sure I will learn a lot from it!
I will try to post some of my first photos taken with my Canon to see what comments it might attract!

Welcome Thinus. As you can see from the posts just a bit above this and on the previous page, South Africa has been featuring prominently as the location of new members joining. Great to have you joining that band.
Congratulations on the 1100D.
I hope that you will feel CiC is a useful forum so far as continuing to develop your knowledge and skills is concerned and I look forward to seeing some of those images.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi everyone,
My name is Shana and I live in the United States; Arizona; in which I have lived my entire life. I am brand new to photography and very willing to learn. I have a digital SLR, Cannon Rebel (kit with 18-55mm lens, and the 75-300), that my husband bought when we wanted to get pictures of both of our sons playing baseball. Until recently I have only used the automatic settings on the camera, however, I am very eager to learn how to use the camera with all of its capability, and mine :-)

Well, Shana, you're certainly starting off here on CiC with the sort of attitude that folks on here will applaud.
As well as being able to read the tutorials on the the various discussions that go on here, you can now, of course, start asking lots of questions. as a resource for learning, questions are more than welcome ..... and there is ni such thing as a dumb questions on CiC. Everyone on here was once at the point that you are now at on the learning curve and had to learn. So their experiences are now available to you.
I hope you enjoy being part of the forum and look forward to joining you on the learning pathway.
