Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)
Hello Folks,
My first name is Sai and am an engineer by profession. Fell in love with photography when I moved from the burbs of Philadelphia, PA to Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is a beautiful place, a diverse biosphere with abundant opportunities for nature photography. Its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway is a blessing!
I really liked Sean's tutorials and being an engineer its just too hard to ignore that silly part of what we call a brain for it seeks details, details & more details, which perhaps is a good thing for photography, but just not too technical to the point where it can kill the "artsy" side.
Anyway, enough rambling, I am happy to be part of this community and look forward to learning more through these forums, which are great for newbies like me ;)
Cheers!
Sai

Hello :)
Soon I will be a student. At 54 I am embarking on a course of study that has interested me since I was 17...photography.
I ran into this forum from a link on a basic photoshop tutorial. At the time I was investigating how to photograph airplanes...A Lancaster will be flying into my city at the beginning of August.
I haven't had much of a chance to browse the forum, but I have been enjoying the information I've read through on photoshop...

Well, I am a digital user since I got a Kodak P&S [2MP] a few years ago. Moved to a series of Sony ending in 828 and then moved to Canon 20D, then 40D and now have both the 40D and a 5D Mk II. I really like the Mk II. I also have a SD880 IS for my "always have one with me camera"
I used to kayak and other things, but as I got older [now 71], a folding Porta-Bote is now my water craft [8ft]. I first started taking photos in 1956. I have been using computers since 1960 so am pretty familiar with digital "stuff"

Hi LadyMary (Mary?),
You can't just say things like that and leave me dangling, you will hopefully tell us which city in case it's near one of us too! ;)
Afterall, you don't see a Lancaster fly very often these days, did I ever say how much I love the sound - I mean, the sound of one Merlin (engine) is great and gives me goosebumps, but four!
Good luck with the course, but if you stick around here you could learn enough to make you as 'teacher's pet' :)

Hi Mel,
We'll mark you down as an 'early adopter' of digital then shall we? ;)
Interesting story, welcome to the CiC forums.
Well, if you have any questions (or answers), just join the fray, don't be shy.
Same is true for everyone else I have welcomed this afternoon.

Hi, thought I'd introduce myself. I found your forum while searching for tutorials. I'm an engineer and the explanations I find there satisfy the geek in me. I have recently been trying to master the nuts and bolts of taking a good image so that I can then relax and take some creative pictures.
So far I am having a good time with my EOS 5D- I worked on imager development at Polaroid in the early 90's so when I saw this camera I knew it was finally time to switch from film to digital.
I'm looking forward to participating in the community as it appears it is a very thoughtful and creative bunch of photographers!
Chris

Hi Chris,
Good to have another engineer on board, I know what you mean about the tutorials, they're good. I think I found them first, then Sean's excellent night shots around Cambridge and finally the forums.
Now I'm part of the furniture - This is a great place to work, as you say, we do have a helpful and creative community here, in fact I'd go so far as to say I'd work here even if they didn't pay me
Hang on, they don't (pay me)
So that's all right then :)
I'm sure you get the idea.
So; any questions, ask away, any pictures, post for critique, or submit to the monthly challenge.

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)
Hi all. I've been shooting pictures since I was a kid but haven't done much in the last 20 years. Needless to say I have a lot of catching up to do.
I just dropped a thousand bucks on a camera (Canon D500) and lens so I I figured it would be a good idea to join this forum and get some tips on how to make the most of it. i haven't recieved it yet and I'm just itching to get my hands on it.
I've been using a Kodak Easy Share for about 2 years and have come to hate the thing.
Looking forward to picking your brains.

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)
Hi All
I have only recently bought a Canon EOS 1000D with twin lens kit, 18-55mm and 75-300mm. Before this camera I had Canon Powershot. I am very interested in learning as much as I can about photography but realise after looking at many of the photos on this site that I still have a very long way to go. I can't afford any other lenses at the moment so I would appreciate any comments on the suitability of these lenses for a range of photography. I will bite the bullet and upload a couple of photos for comment that I took with my Powershot.
Please be gentle with me :)
UPDATE
Photos for critique are now here

Hi All,
Like Walshy I also bought a Canon EOS 1000D recently. Before this I only can afford a Canon point & shoot camera. But Walshy is lucky to have 2 lens kit, mine only one lens 18-55mm. Please give some advice on how far can I go with my lens. Attach here with a picture from my Canon 1000D.
UPDATE
Photo critique is now here

Hi Everyone
I'm new to photography and really don't really know much about the technical aspects of it all !!
Anyways, I have a Canon EOS 50D with a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro lens. I'm still looking for another lens to go with it, something for portraits, so more reading required!
I've joined this site because of the excellent information and the enthusiastic responses in the forum on all topics! :)

Hi Ricko,
Great to have you with us :) What kind of budget do you have for a portrait lens?
As a rule I suggest that people stick to zooms initially because their image quality ("IQ") is (in practical terms) indistinguishable from most primes, but they're a while lot more versatile.

Hi Walshy,
Good to have you join us and be so eager for feedback.
I have taken the liberty of copying the post to a more appropriate forum as a new thread for responses to the photos.
So for now (and here) I´ll just say welcome to the CiC forums from ...

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)
I am 53 years old semi retired and looking for a hobby / possible new part time career.
I have been interested in Photography since I was in high school when I took my very first black and white photographs with my fathers Nikon SLR and developed them.
Today I have many empty hours and now having enrolled in a class at the community college for classes. I am so excited about this new hobby and find all hobbies extremely expensive so I want to start with my existing Pioneer DMC LZ1. Yes it is an older camera with limited controll and takes 1-3 photos per shutter release. The class I take in January requires a minimum 7 megapixles. the camera I have is 4. Just starting out and having a very limited budget to work with some feedback would be a great help starting out. The first semester is becoming aware of how digital cameras work, and so on. I search the internet to prepare me for the upcoming classes and it all seems to be a bit overwheming.
