Hello and welcome to CiC. Glad that you like what you've seen so far and I hope that being part of the forum makes it even better for you.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Welcome on board, Mike. CiC's aim is to help people to learn and to support them in achieving as much as they want so far as photographic knowledge and skills are concerned/. So the help will be there - All you have to do is ask.

By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Nigel - I hope with that experience that you will feel able to offer lots of advice and guidance to others on here who are further behind on the learning curve. It's by sharing what we know that we all move forward.

I hope you enjoy being part of CiC.

As to the question - Plan the shots you want. Don't just turn up on the day and see what happens. have a good idea of the 6-10 shots you really want to get and think about how you set yourself up to get them; e.g. do you need to speak to someone to get a better location that you might otherwise have?

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

I just joined here. I have had my Nikon d5100 about a month now and am enjoying it greatly. Two of the best things I have learned right off the bat are that moving the white balance is helpful and that I can control how much output my flash gets. Once I adjusted my flash I noticed that I like my shots much better...and I have not played with it all that much!

I look forward to learning from the various tutorials here. I can use all the help I can get!

For kicks, I entered a photo in the Monochrome B &W competition! Will probably enter a photo in the March monthly competition but have a couple of events coming up soon and want to see what kind of photos I get from those before deciding.

I must say I have seen some wonderful photos in these forums already. Hopefully one day I will have a wonderful photo or two myself.

Just found your site recently and hope to learn as much as possible about my new OM-D EM5. Have already taken some pics this weekend and today, lots of fun but still having a bit of a tussle with the cam due to the numerous settings. I am retired so I get to play "whenever I want" (Yeah, right).

Hello Shoshanna and welcome to CiC.

Don't try and learn everything at once, Carla. Take one or two things at a time and work on those until you feel really comfortable with what they're about. It's about fitting all the bits of the jigsaw into place. It doesn't all happen at once. But, certainly, your initial aim should be to get to know your camera so well that you can operate it in teh dark without thinking about where all those buttons and dials are and what they do. And, with practice, it does get that familiar. I know. I've been there.

It's great to have you here and I hope you enjoy it.

I certainly hope that you will post your images, Arsh. People on here will always be willing to provide the sort of constructive criticism that will, hopefully, help you learn and develop your skills.

Hi all, I'm Kevin, New Orleans,La. and a noob to CIC. Recently switched from Nikon FF to m4/3 (e-m5). I enjoy documentary photography, want to do more portraiture and night work in the future. I need to improve in all areas, esp. PP.

    You and me, Kevin!

Great to have you here and thanks for deciding to join up. CiC is very much about learning and I think you'll find that people on here are maybe more motivated to help and support people than on some other forums that exist.

You are correct and I should have thought of that. Unfortunately before I set out yesterday I set a 2-sec delay on the shutter thinking it would be for Bulb only. It wasn't, then I couldn't find it again. So I had to just deal with it until I could get back and read the manual. As you stated, I have now turned off all of the silliness that does not apply to Aperture Priority. I may try artsy stuff when I am sure I can find the basics.

But the good thing is that you now know about the 2-sec delay function on your camera. So, it was an important piece of learning.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi, this is Jeanne and I have been taking photos for about four years now and have found photography to be my passion! During these last four years, I have been researching and reading information on photography and photoshop. My sister, a professional photographer graduate of Seattle Art Institute, encouraged me to buy an Olympus Pen since it is light in weight, functions like a DSLR and takes high quality photos. Upon researching, I found that your website is a very valuable resource since it is highly educational and has a very friendly-user professional approach. Your tutorials include excellent visual samples to assist amateur photographers in understanding the complexity of photography. Your website is highly recommended for its professional appearance and approach. It took me a long time to enter into this community until today. I finally have decided to read the threads and have found the community members to be genuinely helpful. I also appreciate the use of constructive criticism to assist and improve one's skill. Hopefully, I will be around for awhile!
