Stephanie - I hope you end up feeling that you've arrived in the right place and that being part of CiC contrbuted to your photographic learning and skills development.
You now do have the equipment to help you produce great images. But always remember, it's you that makes the pictures, not the equipment. It's just there to help you. What you need to do now is practice, practice, practice until using that camera and lens become automatic and just like breathing. Sometimes it will feel as if that's impossible and you'll never make it. But you will, id that's what you want.
And lots of people on here will be very happy to share their knowledge and experience in order to help on that learning journey.

Hi everyone,
I am Jon. I am new to photography. I got into photography when my Grandad wanted me to have his 35mm Canon EOS 1000FN with 2 lenses Sigma 35-80mm 1:4 - 5.6 and Canon EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 before he sadly passed away.
I have been using it now for a while and really enjoy going out taking photos with it. I have some good results too. I have decided to move onto digital and invested in a second hand Canon 40d body. I will be picking the camera up this week and cannot wait to get started. I still plan on using my Grandad's along side it.
For the time being while I get use to the camera I will use the lenses I have got but I am planning on getting some more in the near future when I have done some research about what to get and have some extra funds.
I am really keen to learn how to take amazing photos and looking forward to getting help from everyone on the forum with this and their recommendations on kit/editing software and anything else photography related.

I certainly hope you will find that help readily available on here. The good thing about the people on here is that they don't forget that they were once at the same stage as you now are on the learning curve. We all have to learn and helping each other is one of the best ways of achieving that.

I hope it does too, and you are very welcome here as a new member of CiC.
So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

It's a bit like playing around with fonts on an online forum - sometimes you just have to press the buttons and see what happens!
You're very welcome and if you want to get down to some serious learning to improve your photographic knowledge and skills, then you've found the right online environment. CiC is about learning.
In terms of learning your camera and lens(es), then it's very much a case of read the manuals, then practice, practice, practice; then read the manuals again and practice, practice, practice. Keep repeating until you can operate every button correctly without looking at the camera.
Once you can do that you can forget about having to think about the buttons and concentrate on what you're seeing in the viewfinder.
And ........ so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Hello Andy and welcome to CiC. Thanks for deciding to 'sign up'.
I would say that on the basis of what you've got in Flickr, you're doing pretty well.
CiC is very much about learning and about supporting each other to be as good as each of wants to be. There'sa lot of knowledge adn skill flying about on here and people are very willing to share that. All you have to do is get involved in the discussions, ask questions, post up images for comment, etc.
I hope you enjoy it.

Hello
New here :) Looks like tons of great info and certainly some very wonderful photography!
I have a D5000 Nikon . a 55-200mm lens and a newly purchased "nifty fifty".
I enjoy photographing dogs and people...although I find it difficult to get people to "pose" for me ...dogs are easier :)

Hello and welcome.

I think there are a few members here who might take the opposite view :)
This is a great place to share and learn, so look forward to hearing more from you.
It would be nice if you updated your profile to say where you are in the world, and your "real" name that we can call you by. It's more friendly that way, and we are a friendly bunch!

Hi everyone. My name's Bob (Boab) Smith. tao2 is my tag. Been using CinC for years and honestly didn't notice the forums 'til about 4/5 months ago. Ah tended tae dip in, looking for particular items, then out again. Hopefully hang around a bit longer now.
Inherited a box brownie when ah was 10 and been shooting ever since, so 50 years now! Early retirement 4 years ago gives plenty opportunities . Over the past 6/7 years, been using film and vintage cameras more and more - though if anyone's got a cheap Sony A900...:). Ah use Sony A700 with Minolta/Sigma lenses from my Dynax 7000i/8000i days. Still have and use the 8000i. Fujica ST900, Olympus OM 10, couple of old Zenits,Leica AF-C1(Minolta freedom) and a wee Fuji s1500 for football trips, parties etc.- a much under-rated wee camera. Also a handful of rangefinders and far too many manual lenses. In my defence, ah use them all - they're not shelf ornaments.
Ah look forward tae joining in.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello CiC,
My name is Cat, and I'm from Minnesota. I'm a beginning portraiture photographer. I shoot with a Canon 7D. I have three prime lenses: 50 2.5 macro, 50 1.8, and a 40 2.5. I also have a 18-135mm, but I never use it anymore. I love my prime lenses!
Joined here because it seems to be a super active forum, with a lot of really helpful/social members. Hoping to get lots of CC for the portraits I post. I also have a few questions that pop up regularly about my camera and post processing, so definitely will be looking for help in those areas in the near future.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi Cat and a warm welcome.
This is a great forum, with lots of enthusiastic and constructive members. I hope you enjoy being with us.
I can see that you have posted some images a bit lower down. I won't try to comment because I know nothing about portraits. I hope you get some feedback, but you will get more if you re-post in the "People and Pets" forum, or the "Digital cameras and equipment" because they are more widely read.
Best regards,
Dave

Thank you for the direction, Dave! I'll head over there.

Hi Everyone, I found this site very exciting and full of lots of information. The pictures I take are with a Nikon D 40 18-55 lens. I am partial to Nikon and started with the Nikon FE. Back a while ago, ancient history, I went to Antarctica as part of a Navy helicopter squadron aboard an ice breaker. I took pictures with a 35 mm Voigtlander camera and lucky they came out good. I love photography wish I could take pictures like I see on this site. Wish well to all, Pete
