Hi Donald, no we haven't met although you may well have met Dr Karen Sutherland who is one of our Senior Principle Practitioners here in Victoria. We have a number of Scots among our UK imports or should that be recruits.
I have spent a couple of months in Scotland (May 2006 and April-May in 2007) and it is truly one of the beautiful places on this earth.
Hi, my name is Lee. I have been lurking on this site for several months and found it to truly be a wealth of information. I have read almost all the tutorials and am very appreciative of the time and energy put forth by the authors. I spend a fare amount of time reading the forums and also find them extremely helpful. Thanks to everyone for sharing!!
I am a retired physician living on the eastern shore of Maryland (USA). My interests are landscape, travel and wildlife photography. I was at one time an avid underwater photographer but don't do much any more.
I shoot with a Nikon D200 which was/is my first digital camera. I hope to upgrade soon as noise has become an issue. I have a 17-35 2.8, a 35-70 2.8, a 80-400 VR and a 18-200 VR (my walk around lens). I PP using PS 5.5. I am looking to improve my photo skills with reading and practice, practice, practice.
Okay, Lee, the exam starts at 9am tomorrow!!
Thank you for the comments. Thanks for the tutorials are due to Sean (McQ) site owner and administrator .. with feedback from members on here at the drafting stages. Thanks for the forum is due solely to all the members of here who enter discussion in the spirit of CiC - to learn by supporting each other to develop our knowledge and skills.

Hello,
I'm Sholto and have been taking digital photos for a couple of years now mainly nature and landscapes. Most of my images are mediocre at best with an occasional one being reasonable good I would say. So I've joined to help improve as most people I guess. So I'm looking forward to some constructive criticism. I often seem to have reasonable composition but mess up be not setting one on the camera controls. However, I guess that the only way to improve this is practice, practice and yet more practice.
Cheers,
Sholto
In a word - 'Yes'. And I hope, Sholto, that being part of CiC can help you explore your photography so that you can develop the abilities that you want in order to improve your skills.
Thank you for joining CiC and I hope you will enjoy being part of the forum.
So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.
Hello,
My name is Simon and I am a professional ecologist with a strong photographic background. I call myself a "Conservation and Scientific Photographer". I aim to photograph plants and animals in situ, without any embellishments. The idea is to create images that can be used to promote the conservation and protection of all species.
Here is a link to my Portfolio. Please feel free to comment. Links to my other websites can be found in the "About" page.
Hello Simon and welcome to CiC.
You obviously have a wealth of knowledge and experience and I hope you will want to share that with others here on CiC in order to help them learn ... which is what CiC is about. Along the way, I hope you will enjoy being part of this forum and also find that, like all of, our learning never stops and colleagues always have something to teach us.
By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Hello. I'm Dave from Bridport in Southern England. I have been interested in photography for about 35 years - my first camera was a Zenit-E. I now have two Canon dSLRs - an EOS5DII and an EOS50D. Lenses are Canon 24-70, 70-210, 100mm macro and MP-E 65mm macro. My main interests are macro, sport and photographing rock music performances. I bought a Metz macro flash last year but haven't got around to using it!
Hello Dave and welcome to CiC.
I hope all that knowledge and experience will be shared on here so that others can benefit from what you've got to teach. CiC is that sort of forum.
From your Username I know it seems obvious to UK members, but you might like to go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.
Hope we'll see your images, as well as your thoughts, ideas etc for a long time to come.
Hi everyone. My nickname is Doody but my name is "David". Fifty years ago, I developed my own B&W film. I once hired a sampan in Hong Kong to row me into the harbor at sun set to take photos. I can't remember yesterday, but I'll never forget that experience. I want to get back into photography using a DSLR. I want to "kit" out with all the necessaries plus a little and I would like to keep the cost to around $2,000. USD. I am computer literate and I can work with photo editing programs. I like still and acton photography. In researching cameras and equipment I have become totally confused. I have a good amount of credit due me at a local retailer but their professional help is lacking. I could use some knowledgeable help and I promise not to post recriminations for any unhappy results.
David - A very warm welcome to CiC. I hope that your experience from all those years ago will be used to give advise to others on here, but also that you are able to learn from the knowledge of others.
In terms of advice and guidance re purchases, I suppose the first requirement is in drawing up the list. What is it you are going to buy.
Obviously there is a camera body and at least one lens. Perhpas a kit lens that comes with the body in the first instance, or because teh kit lenses that are supplied with a body are not the higher quality lenses, buying a body and a higher spec lens. Then, are you one of those who believes you should put a UV filter onto the front of the lens to protect the front element, or one of those who don't agree with doing that.
Batteries and memory cards. Need them in order to take and capture photographs. Always get what you think you'll need, then at least one spare.
A tripod! Is that going to be on the 'essential' list from the outset?
A flash unit? Is that going to be needed?
Then, when you've got the pictures captured, you're going to need computer software to process them. Will you want to use the software that will probably come bundled with the camera? Or do you want to look at other free-to-use software that you can download? Or do you you want to go straight in at the top of the heap and get Photoshop?
So, I's be drawing up my shopping list and starting to look at costs against the items on it. That alone migth guide you towards what segment of the camera body market you are going to be looking at; e.g. the 'consumer' entry/level DSLR, the higher spec 'pro-sumer' bodies, or indeed, not a DSLR, but a 'bridge' camera such as the Panasonics, etc.
Once you start getting an idea of the 'class' of body you are likely to be looking at, get out there and start handling them and seeing what 'fits' nicely for you. As for the Canon is better than Nikon/Nikon is better than Canon etc etc arguments. Ignore them. Picxtures are made by the persopn holding the camera. All cameras are more than capable of producing the goods. Higher spec bodies give more options/choice and the ergonomics can be more user-friendly. The same applies in terms of differnces between manufacturers. The best camera is the one that works best for you.
Thank you for your warm welcome. What I am considering is a D7100, 18/200 and a good 2.8. Good tripod, flash & wifi. I use photoshop, corel paint. I like the D7000, however, the reviews I've read on the D7100 have been exceptional. Am I on the right track?
