Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello: I have recently upgraded my Panasonic Lumix FZ40 to a Sony A58 with 18 ~ 55 kit lens. Choosing between the Sony, Nikon D3100, and Nikon D5100 was a very involved process, although the Sony was always my top choice. Then I ran into a 3 day sale at Best Buy and picked up the Sony for $450!
I have already noticed a world of difference between the old Lumix and the new one.
My photo interests include landscapes and waterscapes ( I live at the west end of Lake Ontario); dawnscapes, portraits, pets and anything odd/ unusual that crops up in my travels.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello my name is Colin and I live in The Cotswolds, UK, I have just purchased a Nikon P520, I am a complete beginner and I do not have a clue about photography but am more than willing to learn, my particular interest is birding and would love to take some decent photo's.
I do not want to just put the camera on auto and fire away., but as a good start would like to know what setting to put it on with a scenario of a bright sunny day sitting in a bird hide a) overlooking a lake b) overlooking a wood.
I know this sounds lazy but I think it is the best way (for me) to pick it up.
Would welcome any help.
Best Regards
Colin

That's a pretty good location to be living in as a keen photographer.

And that, Colin, is the attitude that is required and that signifies that you will very probably succeed in mastering the art and craft of photography. Please do ask any questions you have and use the knowledge and skills of the people on here who are always willing to help.

I hope you do and that you will be part of this forum for a long time to come.
And, finally, this is a general comment to each of you - If you haven't entered it and so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hi Folks: I'm Evan from New York. I'm 69 years old and recently retired from a career in veterinary medicine. I first became interested in photography in high school when I photographed school basketball games with a Kodak Brownie camera. Before attending veterinary school in the Philippines I taught elementary school including a summer teaching black & white photo developing. I became a more serious photographer in 1989 when I began taking workshops and photo tours. I later taught nature photography at Hofstra University on Long Island and led several photography tours in the United States. I started with a Nikkormat EL which I purchased in Hong Kong in 1971 and cycled through the Nikon F3, F4 & F5. I transitioned to digital with the Nikon D200, D700 & now the D800E.

Welcome, Evan. There are another couple of vets on here as well. You guys can form a sub-group!
I certainly hope all that photographic experience will be available to others on here in order to help them learn. CiC very much has that ethos of sharing knowledge and skills so that we can all learn from each other.
Thank you for deciding to join the forum.

I certainly hope so, Bonny. Lots of people on here will be very willing answer questions and give advice and guidance. All you have to do is ask the questions. On CiC there is no such thing as a dumb question. Every one of us had to start at the beginning.

Hi there. My name is Mel. i'm from a lovely town at the Peruvian rainforest, but I live in Lima now. I´m very interested in photography but unfortunately I'm only an amateur. I´ve got a kind of decent bridge camera (Lumix FZ47) and it has been a wonderful source of joy and fun taking pictures anytime I can...but I´ve already made my mind and I'm going to jump to DRSL at the end of the year. I'm still looking for the best option, it could be little treaky to choose the right one!
I'm looking forward to become a better shooter and continue falling in love with this amazing way to express ourself and create beauty.
I've recently found you CiC and it has been an amazing discover so far. I love your tutorials and all the stuff. Since my English is not too good, it's little slow for me to be in touch, but I'll definately try my best.
Well, thanks for the great site and see you soon.
Cheers from Peru
Mel
