Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi everyone my name is Rudy and I live in Houston, Texas USA. I shoot on a Nikon d7000 with either a 35mm, 18-105 or 55-200mm lenses. My next lens will be 50mm 1.8 if Santa is good to me! I was recently asked to shoot a wedding in March of 2014 and I'm pretty nervous to say the least. I have been taking photographs on a dslr for about a year now and have learned a lot on my own and from taking a couple of beginner/intermediate classes locally. Your forum looks very interesting and hopefully I can contribute and learn at the same time.

Great to have you here.
So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Thank you for that, Rudy and you've captured the philosophy of CiC exactly. It's about sharing and learning together.
I look forward to you being involved.

Howdy, howdy, howdy. The cute little box kept chiding me about posting, so even though I have almost no idea what goes on here, I thought I'd better say Howdy!
I found this site through a mention in a blog at the Darktable website, and I wish I had discovered it a long time ago, and expect to learn a great deal from this community. I hope I have something of value to share in return.
I switched my camera to Raw about two years ago would never voluntarily go back, although I still have a lot to learn about what may be done when I have not properly exposed an image. Boring details: Canon T2i(550D), usually set to aperture priority. My old habit from the film days of shooting very sparingly has died a messy death in the digital era. I am starting to find the middle ground after shooting far too much for the last couple of years.
Although I have not properly oriented my self in this site, I did look for the proper place to comment about the site itself, and in particular the sign up process. Not finding one, I will add those comments here. Know that I am certain this is a fabulous site, and I hope that something in what I add below will help improve the experience for users yet to come. My intent is to be constructive.
Although creating an account "is free", it is far from easy. I gave up twice and had to find something else to do while cooling off, before returning to try again. I believe I have a useful suggestion to go with some my simple venting.
I do not know how other folk's screens look, but on my screen, when viewing the sign-up page I can only see one of the following three areas at once: the password boxes, the 'are you human' challenge, and the little check box indicating that I have read and accepted the terms of use. I mention these three areas, as they are the only parts of the page which are always cleared at each failure to correctly transscribe the text in the challenge. Could you PLEASE either 1) put these three items near each other, so as to easily allow human failures to both remember they must be re-entered and to re-enter them, or 2) perhaps only clear the essential box on failure.
I admit that after typing my original, fairly secure password 4 or 5 times, I changed it to something stupid which I could more easily restore every time, but what I really don't understand is why it is assumed that I must re-read and accept the terms again every time I faied to solve the challenge. I admit havign a terrible memory, but I think I can retain the gist of the terms that long. I succeeded in solving the challenge the first time after only about 7 or 8 tries, but had not remembered to commit yet again to the terms, and so failed on the grounds that I had not accepted the terms. My wife was present, and does not appreciate when I begin shouting at the computer. I had to do a small pennance. I did not keep score, but I think I failed the challenge another 20 times before finally demonstrating my humanity a second time.
Please think about at least some improvements to the sign-in page. There may be others as nearly as peculiar as myself who are not relentlessly persistent in the face of certain failure. I think they deserve a chance to join the community as well.

Hi John,
Welcome to CiC - great to have you with us!
Thanks for the signup feedback - I'll bring it to Sean's attention (site owner). I know what you mean about the CAPTCHA "challenges" -- I come across them semi-regularly and - man oh man - do I ever struggle with some of them. It's always a sigh of relief when I finally get one right!

Hi Steve and welcome. It certainly sounds like you have a wide range of interests - portraits and sport are about as far apart as you are going to get so far as technique is concerned. I hope that CiC can help you on your journey, and you in turn can help others. You didn't mention what post-processing (pp) software you use. Nowadays that also a really big part of getting the image that you want.
Dave
Photoshop CS5 is what I use (or attempt to use).

Hi ... My name is Izzie and I am new to this forum. My frequent use camera is a D90 (version 2) and D300s. I am trying to save for a D800E which I heard is a very, very good camera. I am an amateur photographer for quite sometime and will probably stay so for many more years as I gain knowledge in different areas of photography. Through sheer luck, I have had several of my photos published in two magazines eve though in my mind's eyes they are not really very good ones. Like most of you, I have had some real ordinary photos stolen from my blog (which I had since put down...) I was browsing on the subject of selective natural color article when I came on this site. I am hungry to learn more. This site looks like what I just needed to feed my photographic needs.
Thanks a lot to the administrators for allowing me to join this group. Now I want to join in the discussions on other forums. I guess I will have to look for the selection of forums join in now. Thank you community for bearing with me.

Hi Isabel,
Welcome to CiC -- it's great to have you with us.
Don't be shy -- feel free to jump on to an existing thread or start a new one of your own; they're all the same price (free) :)
I'm a Canon man personally, but the Nikon D800 and D800E are indeed both fine pro-sumer cameras. As with most things in photography though, the camera is usually a relatively small part of "the big picture" (excuse the pun). Even more important are things like lighting, lenses, photographer knowledge & skill, tripod etc. When you're ready let us know more about the type of shooting that you do, and we'll all do our best to assist from there.

Hi everyone, my name is Rod and I have been using my GX10 now for about 7 years. I came straight into digital with no previous 35mm experience. When I started I couldn't have told you the difference between an f_stop and a bus_stop. Hence a slow learning curve i.e. all self taught.
I enjoy nature photography and like to capture landscape through too macro, with macro being a particular favourite of mine.
I have over the last couple of years started to realise the limitations of my GX10 but will have too wait until I get another job before I can afford to upgrade, certainly the new Pentax K3 is currently top of my wish list.
I reside in Formby, Merseyside, which is north of Liverpool and belong to the local Formby photo group, which is a very friendly informal small club and always welcoming to new members.
I look forward to being part of this community and hopefully gain some sound advice and critique on photo's. Constructive critique, I think can be one of the most useful ways to learn.
Best wishes
Rod

Hi All Cambridge in Colour,
My name is Jill, I live in Northland, New Zealand.
I am new here, this looks exciting, a new learning experience.
I have been doing photography for a number of years but recently retired and will now have more time.
I often get overwhelmed at what is to learn. I do like keep moving on to different areas.
At the moment I am challenging myself in Macro Photography and photo stacking, still with a lot to learn.
When people ask what area of photography I am in i always feel confused. I am going in all directions, I can often feel overwhelmed.
I have a Canon 50D II.
Looking forward to this forum.
Jill
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello Suraj, and a warm welcome to CiC. If you want to learn and share your understanding of photography, you have come to the right place.
If I might make a comment on your picture. It is an interesting image, I suppose that the chain on the wheel means it is in a museum or similar? I think I would crop the photo to concentrate the attention on the wheel. I won't make any suggestions as to other ways to enhance, without knowing what software you have. Of course, any opinions are personal!
If you wish, you could update your profile to show your real name, and whereabouts you are in the world, it will then show alongside all of your posts. Try this link: https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/fo...hread29999.htm
Best regards,
Dave

Hello Rod, and welcome from someone not too far away from you.
This is a friendly place, and critique (C&C is the jargon) is always constructive. Being a friendly place, it would be good if you could update your profile with the info you have put in this post, that way it appears alongside all of your posts. This link may help: https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/fo...hread29999.htm
I do hope you enjoy being a part of this community, and that you'll be able to share some of your images with us soon.
Best regards,
Dave

Hello Jill, and welcome to another Kiwi (there are a few of your fellow countrymen/women around here :)). This is a great place to learn and share. If you want help on macro and focus stacking, ask away and the members here will be happy to share what they know.
I agree that things can seem overwhelming, I'm sure the way ahead is baby steps! One of the great things about digital photography is there is no cost in experimenting.
Looking forward to hearing more from you, and seeing some pictures.
Best regards,
Dave

I think and hope that you will find, that now you are an enthusiastic photographer, you do learn to look at the world in more detail and see things that, in the past, you would not have noted. You start see things in terms of pictures.
I hope you enjoy being part of this forum.
By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi everyone. My name is John. I'm from Sydney Australia. I began serious photography in the early 1970s with a Nikkormat. Then I got lazy and used the auto setting on a series of Nikons and took sloppy photos as a result. Now I'm using a Fuji X-E2 and putting more thought into it. My photography is done while travelling and covers a range of subjects, but the ones I like most are pics of local people in the everyday settings of their lives. You can see some of my pics at
http://johnnolanphotographer.blogspot.com
I would welcome feedback because I don't think you can judge your own photos -- you can only like them, or not.
Cheers
John

Hello John, and welcome to the community. If you want to learn and share, this is a great place to do it. There are some excellent photographers here, and the are always ready to offer feedback and advice. I had a quick look at your blog, and can see a wide range of styles. If you want to get some feedback on your images, it's best to post them in one of the forums. There are some tips on posting and getting feedback here:

If you wish, you could also update your profile so that it shows where you are in the world alongside all of your posts, it's just nice to know :) You could also add your "real name", but with your user name that's hardly necessary

Hi there all. My name is Graham and I use mainly a Sony system - A77 + A99 with a variety of Sigma and Sony lenses. I enjoy nature, the environment, villages/towns and people. I have recently acquired a Nikon FM2 film camera and use 50mm and 28mm manual lenses on this - am loving the thought that goes into this. As a result I am considering buying a Fuji X100S to go with this. I have a flickr address - Hols52 if you want to see the sort of pictures I like to take.
