I never realized how critical the tactile operation of the camera and gear is until an experience I had yesterday afternoon (i'll write about this in another thread).
Let's just say that it's going to be a long process. Baby steps. My first goal is to be able to operate the Sub Command wheel without turning the camera off (with the lights ON in broad daylight) ! :o

A man after my own heart!!
Hello James and a very warm welcome to the CiC Forum. I hope you enjoy being able to exchange ideas and views on here, in what we like to think is a constructive learning online environment.
So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hi,
My name is Brian but I post under the name Saorsa.
I live in SW Florida and we visit the UK about once per year to the Dunstable, Bedfordshire area.
Most of my work is Nature and Macro. I generally like looking for behavioral shots in a natural setting. I became aware of this site when someone linked to my blog in a reply and it showed up in my blog statistics.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Greetings all,
Total newbie here. Tomorrow I'm looking to get my first DSLR. I want to take pictures of EVERYTHING! :)

Hello Brian and welcome to the forum. Depending on which name you wish to be addressed by and so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Great to have you her and I hope you enjoy it.

Hello Moose.
That is exactly the way to approach learning. Go out there and take lots and lots of pictures. But as you're doing so, think about what it is you are doing. It's about raising you're game from the point and shooter to thinking about the picture you're wanting to end up with.
What DSLR are you getting?
The biggie is - get to know the camera. Don't just put it into 'Auto' and press the shutter at things. Go into the manual and semi-manual (Aperture priority, Shutter, Prioprity modes). that then puts you in control of the process, not the camera. At first it feels a lot easier to shoot in Auto. You'll end with okay images most of the time. But will they be your images or the cameras? Going into teh other modes feels tougher because it involved more learning and understanding. But once that falls into place, you'll not look back.
Have great fun and remember to post some images on here and invite peopole to give you constructive feedback. Everyone on here was once at the exact same place as you are now so far as your knowledge and skill is concerned.

Hi everyone,
I stumbled across this site a few times whilst looking for answers to a few questions and it seemed like a really great community so figured I'd sign up. I've been learning photography for about 8 months, shooting raw with my Sony NEX, and developing in Lightroom, learning loads along the way from sites such as this.
Cheers,
Joe

Hi Joe, and welcome on board. It really is a great community, everyone helps everyone else - and pretty much everyone has something to bring. Hope that you stay around and enjoy your time here.
If you don't mind, it would be good if you could update your profile to say whereabouts you are in the world. This is a friendly place, and it is nice to know. If you don't know how, this link should help: https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/fo...hread29999.htm
Best regards,

Hi,my name is Patrick. I am pleased to be allowed to join in this learning experience. I live in the Sevier Valley in Central Utah. I took up photography as a hobby about 30 years ago because I found myself too busy to continue painting water colors. Since the advent of digital photography I've been shooting everything I find attractive. I'm looking forward to making some friends and refining my photos. Thanks!

Greetings everyone. I'm Mark, from middle England.
I have a Nikon D7000 and D90, plus a variety of lenses. I shoot all sorts of different styles depending on my mood. I used a 35mm SLR for years, but it is really with the advent of digital photography that I have begun to blossom, so to speak!

Hello Mark and welcome to the forum.
I hope you'll share some of that knowledge and experience on here so that others can benefit and learn from you. CiC is very much that sort of forum.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I was referred to this site today and immediately liked what I saw.
Brief intro: fell into silver salts in childhood having a trigger happy dad. The photo fever endured through endless hours in developer/stop-bath/fixer vapours.
Thankfully, the digital age caught up and Photoshop has returned the bathroom to its original vocation.
Thankfully as well, my early Nikon lenses were F-mounts and some of them (eg Zoom-Nikkor 35-105mm macro) are still very useful. I shoot both Dx (APS-C) and Fx (full frame) format; and recently started experimenting with the new Cx format on the N1 V1.
I consider my photography to be eclectic but would rather have people judge for themselves. At this point photography is more a passion than a profession and occupies my thoughts everyday. I try to stay informed by participating in several forums and will gladly help others when I can.
I look forward to joining in some of the interesting discussions on this forum.
Christian

Welcome Christian! Happy to see another Montrealer sign up. I just recently joined as well. I checked out your site, I wouldn't say eclectic but certainly you have your own style (which I like very much I must say!).

Hi everyone. I'm Dave Crim, a fairly new but ambitious amateur from Cincinnati, Ohio. I've been learning a lot of useful technical information here and am looking forward to upgrading from my current Canon Rebel 350d to a shiny new 6d. I'm seeing a lot of wonderful photography here also, and am so glad I found this site!
