I'm a newbie here...name is Gerald and I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada!
I found this site while searching for info on Depth of field. Great site from what Ihave seen so far!
I recently purchased a Canon Rebel XSi and am presently setting up a website. I'm finding that there is a LOT more to learn...:)
But, that should be a good thing because from what I've seen so far here...everyone is willing to help each other!
Will post some pics for critique soon.

I was going through the web to find some tutorials for photography and found this site having useful information. So I decided to join.

I am from Chennai, India. New to Photography.

It was my child hood dream to become a photographer and after some savings I recently purchased Nikon D90 with AF-S NIKKOR 18-105mm lens.

To be frank I do not understand the technical phrases and would love to learn. Some body once told me that you learn by making mistakes.

So, donot get upset or irritated if I ask for some explanations which may be silly or childish to you.

I am takin my first step in to photography and I am sure that you all will assist me.

This is the first time I've joined a group for threaded conversations - so please bear with me.

I am a middle school math and science teacher (12 and 13 year-olds) in California, USA. I enjoy some amateur photography as well, and when I'm brave enough, I might post a few here for feed back. I have enjoyed poking around looking at everyone else's in the meantime! So many good photos and comments. I appreciate the constructive, kind and encouraging feedback I've seen so far.

Fear not, there is no such thing as a silly question, so go ahead and ask. You might be surprised how often what might appear a simple question causes a lot of head scratching :)

It is certainly true that you learn best from mistakes, the knack is; learning from other people's mistakes ;)

So ask away and I'll share my mistakes with you - I have plenty to choose from :o

Hi everyone

I'm Niall, and I live in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

I have very recently taken the plunge and bought my first DSLR camera (Nikon D5000). I've been using point and shoot cameras for a few years but I really want to learn a lot more about photography.

The tutorials on this site are excellent, and the forum also seems to be a wonderful source for knowledge and advice.

Some of my "snaps" are here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/niallc99/ - and they really are just snaps at this stage. I really need to work hard on my technique and composition.

I think you do your photography an injustice; most are much better than 'snaps' and show good composition/cropping skills.

Great to have you join us and if you have any questions, e.g. on the D5000, don't hesitate to ask.
