    Zhiyao, welcome,

I'm currently working with some "kids" doing (a sort of video) against gun crime and they know so much more than me about this 'tech! You might get a few questions from me "the old geez'"! (I'm 39! I'm not old!)

I forgot to add Happy New Year!

    Hello all..

I just nominated, after stumbling on to this site (as you do) via M'sieur Google.
I live in Brisbane Australia, looks as though I'm with a small minority of Antipodeans here.
However you do seem a friendly lot so I look forward to this association.
I'm retired, very mature age and have been enthusiastic about taking/making photos for around ten or a dozen years although when our 4 children were young, 40+ years ago, there were the usual 100's of happy snaps.
My wife and enjoy travel and have been lucky to have seen many countries around the globe, taken 1000's of images but I'm still not specially confident about results .. just enjoy taking pictures, hoping to do my best at the moment of exposure. I'm not good at post-processing .. is that PP?
The standard of images I've have seen here in a quick scan through is very high .. my input will try to get somewhere near but hopefully time here will help me to reach a higher level.
One question; I haven't found what I would call a "gallery" here. Am I missing something or are all images more part of forum posts? (That's fine by me, just don't want to miss anything).

    Richard Roxborough

BTW .. KM 7D, various lenses, Panasonic TZ15 is my favourite travelling gear these days after years of lugging more than I am now prepared to carry!

Welcome Richard, I'm a bit south of you mate. What sort of gear do you have, as we've got a bit of a challenge starting and that bloody Colin is a Canon man, please say Nikon.

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members

    Hi Richard,

    Welcome

I've only ever been overseas once in my live - and that was to Brisbane; loved the place - everything just seemed so clean and bright.

We tend to fall into the trap of using abreviations a bit too much sometimes, so please sing-out if there's one you don't understand. Common ones are PP (Post Processing) PC (Windows PC) Mac (Apple Macintosh) LR (Lightroom) PS (Photoshop) CS2, CS3, CS4 (Versions of photoshop - CS = Custom Suite).

Hope to have you here as a regular. We don't have a "gallery" here per sec, but there is a small space allocated to users to post image attachments which can then be displayed inline. The best way is to upload images to one of the many online sites and link to them inline here - if you'd like some help with any of that, just ask

Looking forward to seeing some of your work.

    Thanks Bill, thanks Colin ..
Sorry to disappoint, Bill; I'm outfitted with Konica-Minolta 7D slr. Perhaps with very few others I may be somewhat isolated here? I am cogitating about upgrade to Sony 700 but might wait to get used to difficult economic times first!
Colin, I'm about to try uploading my first shot in the group. I'm sentimentally fond of Australia and for starters I hope to stick in a picture each day from the land down under. I may also take you up on help with online site; there seems to be several. Which do group members find most appropriate?

    rrox, welcome,

You ask which inline hosting site find most appropriate? I think it's a purely personal choice. A few use pbase. I use flickr (I belong to a number of groups there) as it has a social aspect aswell. I'd actually defer to Colin on this one though as recently he searched and tried a few different ones.

    Hi Richard,

We had a discussion about hosting sites just the other day ...

    Image Hosting Site Recommendation

I think we briefly discussed it again in another thread, but I can't seem to lay my finger on it just at the moment (somebody else might be able to).

So far, pbase.com seems to be working well for me - past a certain point it's not free, but the charges come to pretty much "nickels and dimes" in the big scheme of things. If you don't find one that suits, or you need more help, just start a new thread in the Open Discussion forum and we'll get right on to it for you (I suspect that commentary here is getting a bit buried).

By the way, I served in the RNZAF with a Flight-Sgt "Rocky" Roxborough (he was also a gliding instructor) - relation by any change?

Looking forward to seeing your shots from another land "down under" (I'm in NZ, "Capital of Australia"

    kareem, welcome,

I've just been admiring you're HDR in your thread. A very nice image. Sean's right as well, if you post a little bit more info on your stuff (and this applies to everyone!) then we can give you more accurate answers/comments.

    Hi Kareem,

Welcome to the CiC Forums - it's great to have you with us, and happy birthday for whenever it is this month! (from your website).

Some very nice work on your website too by the way, although I must confess to almost getting a bit of whiplash from some of the words being rotated 90 degrees!

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members

Hey Chelseablue and Colin, thanks for the greetings!

Chelsea, I just included some setting info on the thread I created with the image in it.
Colin, thanks for checking out the site and the birthday shout! It's next week (the 10th). Which words were rotated? The menus? =) hah.. I could put them on the bottom, just kinda wanted them out the way of the photos as much as possible.

Yeah - I had to bend my neck 90 deg to the left to read them (my eyes can't decode letters rotated 90 degrees and then from bottom to top very well), and then as soon as I got the mouse on the one I wanted, the sub-menu pops out in a normal orientation, so I then have to turn my head back up the regular way (keeping in mind that on a 24 inch monitor the text is pretty small).

If it helps, my preference would be for text in a single horizontal line with a secondary menu popping out below it.

1 week to your birthday eh? 21 again?

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members

Hi again everyone. I guess I should have started posting from here, but it's too late now. Anyway, many thanks to Sean (McQ) and Colin Southern for the warm welcome. I found this forum seeking something specific but decided to visit it again and again because of the friendliness and the spirit of exploration that I see in your posts (not to mention your expert knowledge).

I recently bought Lumix FZ28, got myself many books, and want to try everything at once: HDR, "paintings", B&W, you name it. And, of course, I want to learn to take proper photos without the safety net of the automatic modes.

Being a fan of the free/open source software I mostly use Ufraw and Gimp under Linux. Post production is a real thrill to me. It is mind boggling how many different ways there are to treat one and the same material.

So hello from a passionate amateur!

    Petko

    Hi ochinko,

A welcome from me to Cic.
I hope you will enjoy the forum.

Do you know Lightzone for postprocessing?
There is an old linuxversion wich is free (as in beer) .
It's a different approach to post-processing from Gimp and Photoshop.

If interested, you can download it here:

Thanks, I did download and run it. Looks very interesting. Features like their ZoneFinder and especially ToneMapper are indeed missing in Gimp. I am looking forward to try it extensively when I have more suitable pictures to play with.

Thanks as well to all the others who welcomed me.

    Hi guys,

I've been lurking for a wee while taking in the comments and excellent support of the forums. I'm Scottish, however i've been living in Australia for around 2.5 years - heading back home this May.

Got my first SLR at Christmas settling for the Canon 450D with 18-200 canon lens. Very happy with it at and working my round getting used to all the opportunities an SLR holds over the compact.

    Thought i'd say hello.
