Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello everyone, my name is Peter and I live in KwaZuluNatal in South Africa. I am very muxh an outdoorsman but obligations sometimes conspire to keep me at home. Having said that, nature abounds and the opportunities for hiking, coastal fishing and birding, my passions, are abundent. My photography, while sometimes praised, seldom meets my expectations. The opportunity to be creatively criticised will be exciting and welcome.

Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Hello Jim

I hope you very quickly arrive at teh view that CiC is a resource that will be able to help you along the learning curve. The important point to hold into is that whilst there are many highly competent and knowledgeable people on here, everyone of them was, at some point, at exactly the same point as you now are on that learning curve.

So, when it seems like this photography lark was a bad idea, hold in in there and remind yourself that problems are just questions waiting for answers.

    Hello,
Im Andrew from Devon, England. I live in the country and like it that way! I have taken pictures for many years but always feel i lack the skill of good composition, so i hope to learn more about what makes the wow factor.
I am amazed at some of the pictures i have seen on the site and would like to know if the effects i see are created in camera or on the computer?
    Looking forward to learning.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello, my name is Tina. I am a 40 year old wife, mother & grandmother. I have always enjoyed taking pictures however, have never owned anything more then a point & shoot. That was until a few years back when I purchased my first digital camera which was a Sony Cybershot DSC-H1. My love for taking pictures has become a passion for photography and I have since upgraded from the Sony to a Nikon D3100. I am still far from being a professional but would love to learn as much as I can to eventually become pro! As of right now, I am still trying to learn the ins and outs of my camera, trying to learn and understand Aperture, ISO, White Balance and so on. I cannot afford to go to photography workshops or take classes at this time but am hoping to gain some help from others thru this site.

Currently I feel I do pretty good with nature/scenic photos but seriously struggle with attempting human portraits. I also struggle with which settings to use on my camera and only recently have came out of my shell in an attempt to use manual settings as apposed to Auto. Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance. *~Tina~*

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi everybody,

I am Jukka, retired and 85 year old. Throughout my life I have done normal hobby photography, but also some more serious work on birds. Kine-Exakta II was my camera in those days about 50 years ago.

The last 5 years I have devoted to the hobby of ship photography. For that purpose I am spending time on coasts and seas around Finland, but also visited some "shipspotting" sites of Italy, Germany, England and Poland , among others.

My present camera is a Pentax K-r with 18-55mm and 55-300mm objectives.

I joined this site to learn from its splendid Tutorials, which I have studied for years already and from the experiences of others engaged in this fine hobby.

    Feel free to contact me,
    Jukka

Hi I am Julia, currently living in Jerusalem but am from the UK. I am passionate about photography and at the moment am experimenting by taking photos of everything. I used to take flowers which I still love doing but I have moved onto street photography as Jerusalem is a brilliant place to do it. Am looking forward to sharing some of my photos and looking at the others photos submitted.

    Hi "rgreen",

    We share a common camera
What lenses do we share, I wonder?

Learning is what CiC is all about, so you're off to a good start - and up to 4 posts as I type this reply.

To save people keep asking what your name is, could you do us a favor and Edit (your) Profile and pop a first name into the Real Name field and Indiana, US into the Location field please? It helps time and again when replying if we know how to address you and what currency, etc. you use - many thanks.

It only remains for me to wish you a warm welcome to the CiC forums from ...

    Hi Andrew,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me, great to have you join us.

To answer your question, well, it probably depends what you're talking about, for protraiture, or most things shot close to camera, I always think the camera stage plays a bigger part, but PP (Post Processing) is still important.
For more distant subjects like landscapes, PP plays a bigger part as we're often reducing or enhancing the effects of 'atmospherics' on the image.

I see you are also at 4 posts, so well into making the most of us, see you in the forums

    All the best,

    Hi Jeff,

Your reasons for joining aren't too dissimilar to my own

Someone that has just learnt something can often explain it to someone struggling in a way that avoids leaving out 'assumed knowledge' that more experienced repliers can occasionally fall foul of, that or missing the point entirely - now, as I have progressed over my 3+ years here, I probably do the same

Of course, one has to be willing to be corrected when it turns out you mightn't have the full story right afterall (I've been there a couple of times)

    Hi Tina,

I am sure we can help with everything

Have you had a look at the Tutorials here at CiC, many (myself included) feel they have a clarity of explanation second to none. Don't try to understand everything at once though, start with basics and only move on when they are fully understood - we have many D3100 owners here to help apply the knowledge to your camera too.

On portraiture, do also have a read of Colin's excellent School of Portraiture - Links to Lessons 1 through 8

    What lens(es) do you have?

and finally; Welcome to the CiC forums from ....

    Hi Jukka,

I wonder if you're our oldest member?
I believe we have some octagenarians (is that the correct term?), but you could be our most experienced

    "objectives", now there's a description I haven't heard for a long time.

Welcome to the CiC forums from me (I feel young again), I hope you can join in with the forum community, rather than just wait for 'contact'.

    Hello,
My name is Alan (Tommygazelle). I happened upon this website and am thrilled with the photograhy tutorials and access to an enthusiastic group of like-minded professionals or professionals to be. I've been taking pictures most of my life and have recently started to make photographs with some forethought and skill. I'm learning a lot every day, and, as a wildlife enthusiast, have met and travelled with other photographers to many remote sites around the world. I hope to use this site to continue to learn and at some point put some of my images online.

    Thanks!

    Alan (Tommygazelle)

I certainly hope that we'll see of your images on the forum sooner rather than later.

This is a forum of enthusiastic amateurs and, some, semi professionals, whose aim is to both learn and to support and help others with their learning. So, there are no 'rules' that only really good images must be posted. It is about using the forum, along with the tutorials, to further your knowledge and skills.

    So please do join in.
