    Hi Roger,

Glad to have you with us too.

Landscape and macro seems to be today's popular subjects.

If you've not been here much since September, don't hestate to post any questions, or photos to share; either for the July challenge (opening in a day or so) or for critique and comments.

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

Hello, my name is Elsie. Been browsing the tutorials but been shooting for 24+ years, starting with film, and only went digital officially about 5 years ago. Clung to film for the longest time. User of Canons and Nikons (both film and digital).

Classically trained as a documentary photojournalist and did my fair share of wedding photography work back in the mid 80's but had to settle for a more financially stable career in sports medicine rehab. Only started freelancing again as of this year to get me out of the dungeon...er....lower level office.

    Hi

My name is Bob Chua a Chinese retiree from Singapore and love photography although not a good photographer.

I own a Nikon D90 and have problems understanding the features it holds. I only know how to shoot a Auto Mode.

Through this forum, I hope the experience photographers out there can give me a tip or two to take good pictures.

I look forward to learn and take better pictures.

My name is Richard and based in Dubai. I'm really looking forward in meeting you all and having a chat about photography.

Hope you all have a good day!

    Hi Elsie,

So, it seems you can probably teach us a thing or two, eh?

Anyway, welcome to the CiC forums and don't be shy posting a question, or an answer.

Here's one for you (a question, that is); where in the world are you?

    Regards from ...

    Hi Bob,

Good to have you join us.

Do ask questions and don't omit to post your pictures for constructive feedback, because THE best way to learn is to actually do it.

Hello Dave. I'm what you call a "Yankee". I live state side in New England, Massachusetts, in a small town 20 miles south of the Boston in Canton. I'll help out where I can. It's definitely a learning curve coming from darkroom to digital darkroom but I've definitely grown. Still love to learn, teach, and grow with a passion.

    Hi all,

Just treated myself to a Sony A300...could not afford the Ferrari in my midlife crisis. About 20 years ago I bought a Zenit so heavy that never really used it. This is an excellent website and you guys seem to know what you are talking about...I hope to learn from you and if I can contribute too some day.

What books would you recommend I should get that to start up a self teaching library? I am looking books that cover photography from different angles (B&W/Landscape/macro techniques, critique, challenges, ideas). Most of the beguinners books I've seen all cover the same stuff (what's a DSLR, what's focal length, etc.) so I am looking for books that cover different aspects of the trade frm the beguinning, but which do not treat the reader as an idi..., erm... complete beginner... even though I am (asking too much?)

    Hi Amsterdam,

    From Holland, per chance?
It'd be useful to have a first name if possible.

Books; hmm, PP-wise, I find the Scott Kelby ones good for an introduction and as reference as they're generally extemely well indexed for the jobs you need to do. For advanced reading, probably any of the "Real World" series are excellent for a thorough understanding.

In terms of taking the shots, I think you'll learn more by "doing", and posting the results here for critique than just reading about it. That said, the tutorials linked from the top of every page here are also excellent.

I'm relatively new to photography although I have had a digital camera since they first appeared, 1.3Mp! My son is plane mad (flying kind, not plain mad like his dad) and he wants to get into aviation photography. Current setup is a Canon EOS50D, 16 - 35mm 2.8L II, EFS 17 - 85mm 4.0 IS (came with camera) and a EF 100 - 400 L. Having heaps of fun just becoming proficient at using the camera and lenses and I'm just starting to feel comfortable with it all. I have read a few books and have started shooting RAW and using PS which is another steep learning curve. My main interests are landscapes and some macro work. I'm originally from Africa and would love to take wildlife pics but it is pretty tame here in NZ and I couldn't be bothered waiting hours for a pic of a boring brown bird (no disrespect intended). I look forward to picking your brains.

    Hi Mark,

Greetings from Sunny Nelson - great to have another JAFA (Just Another Fabulous Aucklander) with us

How old is your son? Is he "into" piloting aircraft, or just wanting to photograph them? (I "retired" from recreational aviation a few years ago).

    Hi Mark,

But, but, I thought NZ was 'alive' with wildlife! More species than you can shake a monopod at

Ah; so the average bird colour is brown there is it? We do grey quite well here in UK!

Anyway, we look forward to helping with any questions and reviewing your photos, post away.

I'll sign off with a "welcome to the CiC forums from ..."

Thanks Colin. Evan is almost 15. His ambition is to fly commercially. He is an absolute whiz on MS Flight Simulator. He has a local friend (also a teenager) whose parents own a plane. I drop them off at the local airfield on a Sunday and the 2 of them go flying. Can't carry a passenger in the car but 2 boys off flying! Go figure . He went off to the airport today and came back with hundreds of photos - half out of focus and poorly composed but its his first effort. No doubt tonight he'll be on the computer picking his keepers.

    Hi Mark,

He reminds me of me (too many years ago). In recent years it's amazing how many people wanted to come for a ride, but was a differerent story when it came to sharing the cost (my primary weapon of choice was around $400 per hour).

    Hope you've got deep pockets
