Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi! I'm Paul from the philippines and I recently joined the site to learn more than just the basics. I've been using Digital Compacts eversince it's inception and I'd like to learn more about Manual Settings and control, as well as general photography. I recently acquired a GE X500 digital bridge camera (my old Casio Exilim suffered from water damage years ago) and I was only able to replace it just now. I'm planning and hoping to purchase and acquire a DSLR in the future (DSLR's are quite expensive here in the Philippines) and I'm really excited and positively looking forward to learn from you guys. Thanks!

    Hi folks,

I've just joined the forum today. I'm based in the Catford area of London. I bought my first DSLR a few years ago (a Canon Eos 550D) and I'm keen to improve my photography. Joining a forum seemed like the logical next step.

Hi! I'm Amy from the U.S. I took a Basic photography course a year ago and am here to continue to learn and grow. I have a Nikon D3100 and am able to shoot fully manual, but rarely get the images I am hoping to get. Lots of work to do and I love every minute of it! Cheers!

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

I'm just back from having been away for a few days and am just catching up with life on CiC.

A very warm welcome to you folks who have joined up over the last 24 hours (Jan, Scott, Paul, Andy & Amy).

I hope you all enjoy being part of the forum and that it does help you develop your knowledge and skill in photography. If you have any questions, please do just call out.

Amy - So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts.

Roy - Thanks for adding a message up here (as well as putting your location onto the CiC Location Map).

First of all, go to 'Forum Actions' on the toolbar above and then select 'Edit Profile'.

Once you're in there look at the sidebar on the left-hand side. Scroll down and you should find 'Edit Profile Picture'. That's where you should be able to do what you want.

There are some actions on Edit Profile that don't become available until you post 5 or 10 posts. I don't think this is one of them. But if it is, then just post up a few more messages and then go back in.

Hello, Finn, and welcome to CiC. I hope you find being part of the forum to be useful, educational and enjoyable.

There are many people on here who are very willing to share their knowledge and experience in order to help others, such as yourself, to develop skills and abilities.

I hope we will see some of your pictures being posted up on to the forum.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hello all

After several months thinking, researching and saving £'s last Friday I purchased a Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm kit lens. I like to think I am an intelligent guy so I am pretty happy understanding the mechanics of the camera and what it does. Where I am lacking is how the different aperture values, shutter speed, ISO value and lighting will effect my pictures.

So far I have pretty much only had the opportunity to take photos at home with my son although I did get an hour or two to go for a walk.

I have some of what I believe are my better photos below. Any constructive criticism would be great.

P.S. I have found this website very useful.

    Darren

Congratulations on the new purchase and welcome to the world of CiC. I hope you'll continue to enjoy site and that being part of the forum will boost your learning and development.

On the matter of seeking comment and criticism, well done for jumping straight into that. It is one of the best ways of learning.

Unfortunately, posting images in this thread is unlikely to attract the attention of a lot of the members who would be willing to offer that C & C. The two areas for C & C are 'Nature & Architecture' and 'People & Pets'.

In addition, you have posted URL links to the images rather than using the 'Insert Image Icon' tool so that the link is embedded in the message and therefore becomes visible as an image and not just a URL. If you haven't already done so, please do read the information about posting images in the 'How do i post images ...' thread available via the HELP/Rules tab on the menu bar.

And, finally, in respect of seeking C & C, the following message, posted by one of the other members, will be helpful:

We want to help others to grow in their photographic aspirations as much us we can but we have a problem in trying to answer this question.

Unless we know the photographer fairly well and understand their likes, dislikes, goals, and aspirations, there are simply too many aspects of an image to be able to comment on them all. In addition, photographers skills range extremely widely and an expert photographer in, say macros, can be a complete novice in, say portraiture.

The reason I say all of this is that although we really want to provide appropriate feedback, geared to your level of interest and concern, and at your level of expertise for that aspect of photography, we really need your help.

Dave has hit upon this but I'd like to expand the request with the hopes that others will consider the following as well.

When you post an image for which you want feedback that goes beyond 'that's a nice picture', please tell us a bit about what you were trying to accomplish when you took the image. Are you interested in how to get the best from your camera settings? Or perhaps some technical aspect such as depth of field, contrast, focus, motion blur, white balance, details in shadows, blown highlights, etc. Perhaps you are concentrating on composition where subject matter, level horizon, the use of lines, colours, shapes, are important. Perhaps you have done all you can and are happy with the initial image and are more interested in post processing; cloning, cropping, correcting parallax, merging images, panoramas, focus stacking or any other multitude of retouching techniques.

Maybe you are a beginner and just want to know a few basic ideas on how to improve a snapshot.

The hardest post to provide effective feedback for is one that has multiple diverse images. A single image per post is preferred but on occasion asking for which image is best of several of the same subject can be effectively responded to as well.

Almost any image posted for critique can have a lot of suggested changes ranging from the commonly accepted norms for any image all the way to personal preferences that may or may not fit your style.

Our goal is to provide you with one or two improvements for each image that you can effectively use to move the image in the direction you want to take it. If we provide too many suggestions for improvements the learning process can become muddled and confusing so it is best to sharpen your technique on only one or two aspects at a time, then move on to reshoot, repost, and look for more feedback.

When you post your image, please let us know, if possible:

    1. what you are trying to accomplish

    2. what you did to move toward that goal

    3. what aspect of the image you would like to see improved, and

    4. what you feel your skill level is in this area.

This will help us to provide you with the best possible feedback for your image and learning experience.

Thank you for considering my long-winded response!

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi Donald

Thanks for the pointers, I must apologise, I was far to excited about the new camera and getting some feed back on the few pictures I have taken. I really should have sat down and thought it through.

The quote you provided was very good in pointing out the difficulty other members may have in knowing how to critique our own photos.

I shall have a look at the dedicated threads and compose a more detailed thread regarding my photos.

    Thanks again

    Darren

Please do, because if that's what you've produced just after getting a DSLR, then I can't wait to see what you produce once you've mastered it, because these are creative, imaginative and well put together images.

Hello 'Judge' - Great to have you here. Do you mean new at photography, being on a forum? Or maybe both?

Whatever, it's still great that you found us and decided to join. I hope you've already seen that CiC is a pretty informal online learning community. The reason for its existence is to try and help people learn and develop their skills. So, it doesn't matter that you are new at this sort of thing. And if you make lots of mistakes, not only is that okay, it is probably quite a good thing, so long as you are able to learn from them.

If you have any questions about using the forum, just call out and someone will come along with the answer.

And, in the same way, if you have questions about photography, please do post them up

Once you get around to it, you've maybe seen that most of us tend to use our real names on here. It makes communication more friendly and CiC is that sort of site. You can go to Edit Profile from the Forum Actions tab on the menu bar at the top and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

I hope you enjoy being part of CiC.
