    Hi Emily,

I was attracted to your msg on CIC because you are considering buying the very camera that I bought about a year ago.

It was my first DSLR camera therefore cannot compare it with any other. But I am delighted with everything about it, and find it easy to use. The EOS 550D have the ability to be used either in the fully Auto mode, semi (creative!) auto mode or fully manual. So as you progress your way through the varying techniques of taking good photo's, you can bring in the different elements of the camera at your own pace, to improve your skills.

    Good luck.

    George

    Hi George,

Thanks for the reply. I have heard and read lots of positive feedback about the Canon EOS 550d. I love that the settings can be changed as I become more confident and creative with my photos. I also think its very reasonably priced as well. I am thinking about joining a local camera club when I buy my camera. I have never joined a club or anything like that as an adult because I am quite shy so I think it will be good for me in a number of levels.

I look forward to chatting and seeing some of your photos on the forum

    Emily

Looked at a lot of photography sites lately and came across this one. Looks very nice and great tutorials , so I signed up. Not new to photography, started as a kid, but mostly the family snapshots. Own a Praktica superTL3 and a Nikon F65 - analog SLR cameras. But haven't used them for years. I want to take up photography again and decided to buy my first digital camera. Bought a Panasonic Lumic FZ150. Did not want to go for a dSLR right now , need a handy camera with lot of possibilities and easy to take with me. And since I have a lot to learn I thought this is a good place to start.

Hi all. I've been a casual photographer for many years, but recently decided to become more active and see if I can turn it into a really creative hobby/side business. I just bought a Canon Rebel T3i, and even though I'm taking a photography class I found myself still having many questions that the instructor just wasn't answering in a way that I could understand. Found this website while searching the internet, and was really impressed with the tutorials. I've already learned more just by reading info here than I have learned from class. I'm a huge fan of the beauty of nature, and most of my photos are of landscapes and wildlife. I want to learn how to take great photos of the moon. I was disappointed that my Nikon Coolpix P500 camera took much better photos of the moon last month than my Canon camera, but by reading thru the forums I've already discovered that I need a stronger telephoto lens for the Canon. Still needing to understand why the digital zoom on the Coolpix is giving me better results than the Canon. Getting the feeling that I will always need to carry both cameras to ensure I always get the results that I want.

I haven't any photos to share as yet as I am currently on the market to buy my first DSLR. I've got my heart set on a Canon 550d, please feel free to give me any advice on my choice. I'm hoping to buy it in the next couple of months so if you all don't mind I will probably spend most of my time here picking your brains as I start my adventure into photography.

My main interest is people. Portraits. Especially babies and children. Probably because that's where I am at in my life at the moment. I'm sure my girls will be the stars of most of my photos to begin with.

I love looking at all of the photos that get submitted and I get a lot of inspiration (and camera envy) from you all

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

    Hi Emily,

Once you have a camera capable of 'the basics', most of the rest is down to the photographer, so by all means learn here and you be able to match us sooner than you think.

    Hi Jan,

I did exactly what you have (but back in 2007); I used a Fuji bridge camera (S6500 - a bit like the FZ150) for almost 2 years before I was sure I was hooked enough to spend 10 x the amount on a DSLR in 2009

Bizarrely, I have just bought another bridge camera (Nikon P510) because I'm not hooked enough to spend £7k on a super telephoto

    Hi Heather,

You are correct about the lens being the main issue - the problem is the 'magnification factor'.

Even if you have a telephoto zoom for the T3i, say the 55-250mm, even after applying the crop factor of 1.6, that's 'equivalent of 400mm - the P500 works to the equivalent of 810mm, just over double.

As I was saying above, I just a Nikon P510, which goes to 1000mm equivalent because to get that focal length equivalent for my DSLR is just prohibitively expensive (and heavy).

The tutorials here are excellent, but do make use of us in the forums too, ask questions to your heart's content.

    Hi all,
Just joined the forum and am anxious to explore everything the forum and website has to offer. I have been a member of several interests forums, the Corvette Forum, Jeep Forum and the Triumph motorcycle forum. All have been informative and I have learned a lot and was able to contribute as well. I am confident that this will be the best yet. Photography has always been somewhat of a passion. I first explored it in Vietnam and Japan and became quite proficient with my Minolta SRT-101 and in the darkroom. Business and raising a family put that on hold for a few years and now that I have the time, I am looking forward to getting back into the field.

Hi Dave, my first name is Steve Bougon, and I am in New Orleans, Louisiana. I started with a Nikon D5100 and moved up to the D7000 which I just recently purchased. I am using a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens and a Tamron 18-270mm f3.5. I am thinking that a full frame dslr is in my not to distant future, possibly the Nikon D800.

Hi my name is Dan and I have enjoyed taking random photos for years but recently inherited a Nikon D50 and sold it to upgrade to a Nikon D5100 with the 18-55mm & 55-300mm lenses. NOW I am invested and learning to take the best photos I can. Most forums I have posted on no one even responds. I was trying to find out the best settings for taking a Digital Video for the 4th of July and wish I had known about AE-Lock and differences between fps rates because I was told 24fps would have looked nicer than 30. My video is here http://youtu.be/ltZelxCsqiI if any would care to view it. I enjoy a little vegetable garden I have on my deck and my cats both of which I take alot of photos of to practice with. I am looking forward to learning how NOT to use auto settings Anyone know how to set my signature on here? I see others but don't see the option in my settings to set my signature

    Hi Steve,

Still got my D5000 and can't migrate to the D7000 because I'd lose the tilty LCD, which I use quite a bit, especially on the Nikon P510 I have.

Thanks for adding the other info.

    Cheers,
