The truth is I'm a very eclectic artist and photography is the extension of this. I figured long ago that I could not possibly get good at painting/drawing everything I want to portray so I do it with the lens.

Well first off it looks like I've found a great website and a very informative forum. Im Mark and have been taking "serious" photographs of one form or another for the last four years. When I say serious I mean more your amateur photographer. I recently move to Cascias on the Silver coast Portugal which is fantastic for Seascapes. I have just acquired a set of Lee filters and hope to share my results with you shortly.

Hello, My name is Cheryl A. Williams, Student with the Art institute of Pittsburgh. Studying Photography. I have been attending
since June 2010. Right now the class that I have is lighting. And I love it. I have been in this field since my teen years. From there is was Wal-Mart as a Photo-Lab Tech. I was ask if I wanted to go back to school, so this was my choice. I shoot with a Canon Rebel EOS 550-D with 18-55 and 55-250. I looking to find out what lens to purchase next, I enjoy shooting family and friends, landscapes, plants and flowers and just about what my heart desires and feel. Looking forward to reading this site more, it has very good answers to a lot of what I'm studying. Great to be a part of the group. I have posted some of my work, hope you will enjoy and I like to know what you think? Just got in from work, but glad I looked at this site, it will help me A LOT.

I think everyone on here would agree that moving off auto mode onto the modes that give you control over the shot Av, Tv, full Manual, etc is much the better way to go if you want to practice photography at a serious level. And I hope that being part of CiC can help you with that.

G'day from Australia. My name is Sue (Soozie to my friends - which I hope you all can be). I, like many others, am a newbie to the world of photography. I was blessed with a grand daughter mid last year and have very quickly discovered a passion - or border line obsession with the art of photography.

I have been taking pictures since the beginning of 2012 when I was lucky enough to receive a Canon EOS 550 D as a present. As yet I have no formal education in this art and like so many others here I am struggling a bit with the technical side and all the acronyms. It would be very much appreciated if the readers (especially the seasoned clickers) could offer insight and advice as I progress with my passion.

Over the last few weeks I have gained a little courage and have started experimenting with the settings of my camera, which has not been all that successful, but still fun.

I have posted some of my pictures up in my first album to give you a sense of my style which to me seems to be all over the shop like a mad woman's knitting (but if it has a particular name please let me know as I have no clues). I look forward to where this journey takes me and I hope to have an active involvement on this site

Well. on the basis of the evidence, I'd say:

1) You obviously have an artistic eye in terms of how to arrange and compose an image. To try and explain that, what you have there are far, far removed from the point and shoot family snaps 99.9% of the population would be taken. You are making pictures. There is a world of difference.

And the plus point about that is that all the technical stuff and its associated jargon can be learned. Whilst you can absorb what others say and write about what is and what's not artistic, there has got to be something (call it innate creative ability or vision) within the person that enables that to find expression - in a painting, a photographic a sculpture ....... or whatever. You've got it.

So, as far as I'm concerned, you're already a long way along the road in terms of progressing your passion.

2) The technical stuff is about acquiring and then applying knowledge and skills. And that, I hope, is where the CiC can come in to play. Between the tutorials and the experience of people on here, there is a pretty significant pool of knowledge and skill available to be shared. We're lucky in that the people who take part in this forum tend not to be the sort of guard their knowledge as if it was some sort of state secret. The committed members on here are here because of that culture of sharing and helping others to develop.

So, your role in that is tapping into that knowledge bank, by asking questions (there is no such thing as a dumb question on here), asking for clarification on something somebody says that you maybe don't understand, reminding people to explain what they mean when they descend into jargon, etc etc, and, I hope, enjoying being part of the forum.

By the way, if you'd rather be addressed as Soozie and not Sue, you can change you 'Real Name' in Edit Profile.

Hello and welcome to CiC. I hope this will be the first of many posts as member on here.

I'm afraid your question leads to many more questions rather than answers, the most obvious of which is What kind of image are you trying to make?

If you wish to pursue this question, can I suggest you post it into the 'General Photography Discussion' section of the forum. When you do so, please give people information about what it is you are trying to achieve. Also, please tell people what your experience has been in trying rain shots. What settings have you used and what have the results been like.

People will want to know what lighting condition will be like - bright sunlight; dark and overcast, night-time, etc. Is it heavy rain or light rain?

Im glad that this site is happy to accept the non technical of us that wish to expand our passion. I sadly have come from another site that used feedback and comments as a place to belittle and ridicule. Not very helpful when I really want to learn.

I, too, hope you will be an active participant in CiC. And I hope that by being part of this forum you can learn and develop your knowledge so that you can achieve what you want in photography.

You've maybe seen that most of us tend to use our real names on here. It makes communication more friendly and CiC is that sort of site. Did you know you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts.
