The next step will probably be a digital SLR. So far, I'm pleased with the PowerShot, but expect to have many "Arrrgh!" moments, for which the forum may come in useful. I'm not an expert photographer, but do have some knowledge of finding my way around cameras, so I hope to be able to contribute, too.
    Hi Fied,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me too.

It would be good to see some pictures, what sort of subjects take your fancy?
(I know there is a hint of macro above)

Do you have an online gallery anywhere?

    Regards,

    Hi Panicich,

This is a good place to learn about such things, both from the tutorials and techniques pages and of course the forums, I look forward to your involvement, contributing or otherwise, because even asking questions helps others

    So all that remains is for me to say;
Welocme to the CiC forums from ...

This is my first attempt to figure this format. Greetings to all. I am a serious hobby painter, mostly acrylic, and have always used point and shoot cameras. Friends asked me to post my paintings on FAA (fineartamerica) and I find that most of my paintings look washed out. I am not capturing realistic color. This is not a business for me and I currently use a Nikon Coolpix 3100 digital...which I have had for maybe 10 years.
It has been suggested that I purchase a DSLR to photograph the paintings ranging from 8x10 to 24x36. Others have said, "capturing true colors is difficult whatever the camera"
That is what has brought me to this Forum At 78, Korean Vet USAF, I try to keep improving my day...but don't adjust to cameras and computers like the kids. Picture color and values are ego based, not income based. Wow...major introduction.

    Hi Ron,

    This was a topic that came up a while ago;
    camera copying of paintings and
Canon 5D Lens recommendation to shoot art

I'd recommend you have a read of those and if you have any queries, just start a new thread in General Photography Discussion rather than continue it here.

    Hi Damon,

There's info on that topic in both the forums and the Tutorials, but if you have anything specific, just ask by starting a new thread in the say, the Digital SLR Cameras forum.

Anyway, welcome to the CiC forums from ...

    Hi

I'm an amateur. Bought my first SLR digital a little over 2 years ago from Adorama out of New York. Canon 30D. Been lucky as I don't change lenses much and havn't had a problem with dust on sensor until now. Tried "blowing" it lightly, no success. After searching internet awhile discovered the Copperhill method, bought my Eclipse, Pec Pad, Sensor swipe, reviewed their video a few times and decided to slowly try cleaning the sensor. Unfortunately step one is a nonstarter. Says to go to SensorCleaning on the menu option. I can't find this option. Mine goes from Format to Quality as next one on the menu. Looks like from the guide book I'm missing Custom Functions, Clear Settings, Sensor Clean, Firmware version, and whatever else there might be between Format and Quality. As you can tell I am looking for help/advice. Am I missing something here? I can't find "Sensor Cleaning" on the menu. Larry from Tennessee

    Hi Ron,

A big "welcome to CiC" from me too (ex RNZAF by the way).

As Dave suggested, just start a new thread and I'm sure that we'll be able to help a lot with your image copies - they usually respond exceptionally well to a bit of post-processing - and I can suggest a couple of things that will make a BIG difference. If you can post a sample there it will also help a lot.

    Hi Larry,

It's a common problem - just put the camera in one of the modes OTHER than an "auto" mode (eg manual) and all options will be there

    PS: Welcome to CiC

Thanks a lot. Yep, found it just fine now. Really appreciate the help. Larry

    Hello!
I am a student that would love to learn more about photography. I've got a Canon SX120 IS, and have been using it for a photography class, as well as on my own. I'm not really sure how to work this website yet, so suggestions on how to begin would be helpful... I love to take pictures on the macro setting, and of nature in general.

    Hi there Tennischic05,

Any chance we could have a first name, just to save typing all that everytime

Welcome to the CiC forums, so far you seem to be doing OK, you have an avatar image, which is more than I've managed!

The Site Suggestions and Feedback forum is a good place to learn about this place. It covers how to post pics and all sorts. That said, if you can post (as you have) you can always ask and we'll explain or show you how.

One other question from me ('cos I'm nosey), where in the world are you?

    Thanks, and welcome once again,

    Hi "tennischic05",

Great to have you with us.

With regards to the website, best advice I can think of it "just have a play with it" (we can easily fix anything you break), and ask questions

    Hello,

My name is Jelte de Boer and I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
I found the this site via Google for tilt-shift photography.
    I just started to discover the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II.

    Cheers,
    Jelte
