I'm needing some input on what camera/lense combo I can shoot for (I'm willing to buy a used one) which will start me on the road towards the depth of field/clarity/low light. I know I'm trying achieve a "Picasso" look with "box top" budget (around $500) but I thought I'd throw it out there for your thoughts.
    Hi Doug,

Belatedly- welcome to the CiC forums from me too

Been a similar path myself recently Finepix S6500 to Nikon D5000 - at nearer 3 times your budget

I had my reasons. Anway, it took me from 6 to 12MP, probably as far as you need go, as has been said. Part of the reason for that massive spend was to get a lens that equalled the 10x zoom range I was used to with the Fuji.

Anyway, look forward to questions in the other forums as they occur to you.

    Regards,

    Hi there Mike,

At least I think from reading other posts that was your name (apologies if not).

Welcome to the CiC forums from me and good luck with those studies.

    Hi Stuart,

So you'll be busy early next week then!

Photography can eat up money and time, so you'll need to both give up work AND go full time in order to support the hobby!

Perhaps you have the balance right now

Anyway, don't be shy asking questions or posting pics for feedback.

    Hi Jonny,

    Welcome to the CiC forums.
If you have had the D90 that long I;m guessing there must be some pictures to share with us by now!

Don't be shy, give us a link to an online album, or create one here (in the Community link above), or just post a shot or two for critique.

Any questions, just start a new thread in the appropriate forum.

    Regards,

    Hi "Wetappocreek",

Welcome to CiC - it's great to have you here with us

Do you have a first name that we can use? What type of things do you enjoy photographing?

    Hi,

I have just joined, although I have been a big fan of cambridge in colour for some years. Was once a professional photographer but now a passionate amateur with ideas of going back to photography full time. I work mainly in landscapes but my pro background is portraits.

    Hi there, Barrie. And welcome.

Your website is quite impressive, with some very good images, although I do find that bouncing of the closed images a bit off-putting. If you edit your signature here (under settings) you can link in your website address to all of your posts, like I have. Look forward to your posts.

Thanks for the kind words. Unless I am going mad, I can find nothing in the profile settings to edit my signature....

Not on mine, I have only 4 options,
    Edit Avatar
    Edit Email & Password
    Edit Options
    Edit Ignore List

Maybe I only get that option if I have been a member for a while.

I have altered the transition on the images on my site, they no longer "bounce". I think it was beginning to annoy me too.

hello all, another newbie here. Have spent ages building up a canon system but lost my mojo, hopefully some of the great photos on here might help me get it back!

    New here

Hello My name is Greg and photography has been an interest of mine for quite a while. I live in middle Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau, which is a beautiful place, and a camera is a must have, if only for the beautiful sunsets. My Dad seemed to always have a SLR. The last was a Yashica. I currently have a Canon A620 P&S and am the guy at the get-togethers that always has a camera handy. I am getting older and would like to upgrade to DSLR and maybe try to make a little money to supplement my retirement when the time comes. This will give me a few years to develop my skills. I have a page on Pbase if anyone would like to check it out. www.pbase.com/megrag. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Don't worry about being critical, I can take it and I want to learn.
    Greg

I live in Denver, Colorado. Took an interest in photography in Jr. High School, (Boulder, Colorado), a lo-o-o-ng time ago. Mostly b&w and lately some digital.
Would like to contact anyone that does Bromoil. I belong to a local photo club.
That's it for now. I will add more later.

    Hi, everyone.

I am Sahil, from India. I recently have developed an interest in photography. I am using a normal compact camera. Sony DSC-W80. All the great pics I have seen have (mostly) been shot by DSLRs. I really want to see if compact cameras can also bring up good results. Any thread dedicated to shots from Compact cameras?

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

    Hi again Sahil,

There are a significant number of people with non-DSLRs here, veloman instantly springs to mind as a non DSLR chap that posts regularly in these forums with pics. Brigitte's album (under Community above) is another P&S member and there are quite a few others. Jacksul has only just progressed to a DSLR I think.

If you look at my Picasa albums (link in signature), and my stuff on PBase before May 2009, that's all taken with a bridge camera - a sort of glorified Point and Shoot.

    Cheers,

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

    Hi There,

Just found this website and forum yesterday and been browsing through it and consequently decided to join.
Currently I'm running a lodge in Zambia and decided that there were enough photo opportunities here to warrant buying a better camera. I now own a Nikon D300. Have had it for about a year now.
My main interest are landscape and wildlife photography. But the harsh light here is sometimes a problem.... So, you can expect a couple of questions about that in a later stage
And hopefully, being here will improve my photographic skills
    Cheers
    Anne-Marie

    Hi Anne-Marie,

This is a good place to learn, I am sure your skills will improve.

Your comment about the light is understandable, although on a grey and wet english afternoon, I'd swap

Anyway, glad you have joined us and welcome to the CiC forums from ...
