Hi, my name is Amber and I live in Chelan Washington. I am currently going to school for Multimedia Communications and though I've always loved photography, I'm still very much a novice. I'm really new to using a DSLR, as I've only used point and shoots up until now. I look forward to learning a lot from the site and the photographers here.

And, Nikki, I hope that being involved in the forum also enables you to be exposed to some new ideas and thoughts that will work alongside your course and help your development.

Great to have you both here.

Well, Luis, I certainly hope that you can learn a lot here, as that what CiC is all about.

There are lots of enthusiastic and skilful photographers on here who will be very willing to share their knowledge and experience to help you develop in photography.

Hi everyone! I'm a new member who is looking for constructive feedback on my work as well as answers to technical questions. I live in a fairly remote area of the US where the nearest camera store is about 200 miles away! I shoot primarily wildlife photography and some landscapes currently, but would like to expand into other areas. My close proximity to Yellowstone National Park gives me ample opportunities to explore nature and all that it has to offer. My website can be found at: www.lostcanyonphotography.com

Hello, Elaine and welcome. Great to have you here. That is a great website and shows the high quality of your work.

I very much hope that as well as gaining from others on here, that you will make your very obvious knowledge and skills available to others to help them learn. That's what CiC is very much about.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi John,

Thank you for your welcome message. I came across a web site on the internet that has an elaborate description of the Nikon D7000. I am hereby providing you with the address in case you would want to analyse it for yourself:

    http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_D7000/

I need a camera mainly for three functions: 1) Portraiture, 2) Landscape Photography and 3) Action Photography. The above review describes and demonstrates in detail the shortcomings of the D7000 as compared to Canon EOS D60; especially the 'buffer capacity' problems of the camera when it comes to shooting 'Action Photography'.

My £1000 budget is inclusive of the camera body and the lens.

    Thank you all. Regards.

    Chontrell

Hello Martin. Congratulations on the camera. What is it?

I hope that being part of CiC does contrbute to your learning and development. As well as the tutorials, which seem to be considered amongst the best that are available, there are always fellow enthusiasts on here with lots of knowledge and experience who are willing to try and help answer questions, give opinions, etc.

Hi I'm Tony. Originally from the UK I live and work in Hong Kong.
I am confused about metering in auto mode. With many permutations of aperture and shutter speed possible for a particular exposure, how does the camera determine the setting it would like to use?

    Tony

Hello and welcome to CiC. I hope this will be the first of many posts you'll make onto the forum. And, if so, then you've maybe seen that most of us tend to use our real names on here. It makes communication more friendly and CiC is that sort of site. Did you know you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

As to your question - I hope it is just passing interest and that you don't really want to be shooting in Auto Mode. We would always encourage people to get off auto mode and onto the user controlled modes (Av, Tv, Manual). That puts you in charge and not the camera.

As to your question - I don't know. How these programmes are set up is, of course, a commercially guarded secret by the manufacturers. But, for the purposes of us lay people, the best description I have is that it takes a guess based on the information coming into it when you point it at something. The camera will always go for the 'middle ground'. It assumes that you are a snapper who just wants to grab a holiday snap to show the family back home. It doesn't take account of the fact that you might be a photographer wanting to create a fine art image. It removes so much of the creative ability from the photographer.

Hello, my name is Deb and I live in Northeast Ohio. I have been taking photos with my Fuji HS20 EXR since May. I have been using one of the auto modes because I have not been able to figure out how to use and what to do with the manual settings yet. This is my first post and I am still trying to find my way around this site so please bare with me. I am hoping to learn more about my camera and how to use it effectivly.

    Hi Deb,
Welcome to CiC, it's great to have you with us.
This is a great place to learn and I'm sure you will soon be using those manual settings and producing even better pictures.

Don't forget you can edit your profile to show your real name and a rough location; this way in future posts people can use your first name when making a reply to you; most members use first names here. Regarding location, it's nice if we all know roughly where you are in the world.

I look forward to seeing your pictures and talking to you further in the coming weeks.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello everyone. I started in photography with an apprenticeship in the late 1960s, then ran my own commercial studio through the '70s before drifting into IT in the '80s. I didn't touch a camera for many years but then during a long walkabout in the Australian outback I learned a different way to see the world around me. I began to distil it into four basic components and put those into my pictures: Light, Colour, Form and Texture.

That's the way I have made pictures ever since: free from commercial and other demands, just to please myself and my nearest and dearest. Sounds cocky and self-indulgent, and I suppose it is, but I hope others will enjoy them too.

I look forward to being part of the CiC community. The site is great and the tutorials are some of the best available online.

Hello, I am Ken, I have been into Photography since the days of using Glass Plate Cameras, followed by the Twin Lens Reflex camera, now to the exciting Digital age. It's been a long journey, but full of magic.
