Hi John, thanks for the welcome. Although I have had my Nikon for 3 years I haven't really had much time to take it seriously yet. But now I am retired I hope that will all change. Looking forward to posting my first shots on CIC.

    Regards Arthur.

Hi, My name's Andrea and I am new (but not) to photography.

I grew up around old SLRs as my father was a photographer for the Police Force when I was a child and I developed an interest in photography. I would often work alongside him in our bathroom or laundry which had been converted into a temporary darkroom, processing our photos in black and white.

I last owned an SLR about 10 years ago, a Canon EOS, but have only had compact digital cameras since. Recently we bought a Nikon D3200 twin lens kit so I feel like I am starting all over again. It's exciting, but a little daunting finding my way round all it can do.

As for style of photography? I love macro, portraits, beach/sea and sunsets, but I spend a lot of time taking snapshots of the family too. I don't consider myself a 'natural' photographer, one who can 'see' a shot and get a great photo. I suffer many failures where a photo just doesn't look in print as I see it in my mind lol ...but I have been successful with a few over the years, even with my little point and shoot! I'll be looking out for all sorts of tips and, when I'm brave enough, a critical view of my photos. Thanks!

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello , I got into photography after the birth of my daughter 34 years ago. I want to join a forum that is more interested in the art of photography and not so much on what equipment you own as some of the other forums on the web. I look forward in gathering info from fellow users on how to best to take photos in what ever available light there is and learning how to train my aging eyes to take better photos of landscapes , grandchildren, animals , buildings , sunsets etc.
    Thanks

Hi, My name's Andrea and I am new (but not) to photography.
Hi Andrea, a warm welcome to CiC and a Happy New Year to you and your family. You are right that it can be daunting with one of today's SLR's, but I think some of the answer is to learn one thing at a time and, above all, too keep shooting.

Isn't it great, though, with digital to be able to take as many shots as you want at no extra cost and see the results at once - none of that waiting for films to come back. Then of course the is the opportunity to do some extra work on the computer, which is another whole new dimension.

I hope you enjoy being a member and learning from the others, and from the tutorials. When you do feel ready, don't be too shy about posting to get feedback - they are a very kind and helpful bunch, here.

I spent a month touring NZ a few years back, what an amazing country! Whereabouts are you?

    All the best,

    Dave

    Hello Spaceman and welcome.

You'll find member on here with interests in all kinds of photography (and a few equipment freaks ), so I know there will be things to learn and share. Don't forget the tutorials, too, which are widely reckoned to be among the best on the net.

This is also a very welcoming forum, and comments are always constructive, so I hope you will be posting some images of your own for us to see.

You might want to edit your profile to say whereabouts in the world you are, and also your "real" name - most of us use real names here.

A Happy and Prosperous New Year to you and your family,

    All the best

    Dave

Hello John, and a warm welcome to CiC. You will certainly find this a welcoming and constructive place to explore photography, both learning and offering help, with a quite stunning range of expertise among its members (I'm not including myself in that list )

The C&G level 3 certificate sounds quite demanding, do you already have levels 1/2? It would be very interesting to see some of your portfolio. What software do you use for PP work on your images - that's another area with a lot of learning to do, at least in my experience.

I hope you enjoy your time here, and a Happy New Year to you,

    Cheers,

    Dave

Hi, my name is Jimmy Reese. I am an amateur wildlife and landscape photographer. I especially like Sunsets and Sunrises. I currently use a Canon SX 50 but am trying to decide if a DSLR would serve me better.

    Hi,
I have a new D800e, an iMac, and use Aperture for post-processing. I find the technical aspects of photography and post-processing challenging because I don't practice often enough and, at age 64, things learned are often things forgotten. I've found other forum members in Apple discussions and preview to be very helpful. I stumbled on this forum by accident but it looks to be very helpful. I rarely post images because I'm self-conscious about the quality but perhaps after I retire I can devote more time to this wonderful hobby.

    Hi Jimmy,
    welcome to CiC.
I would love to see some of your pictures; particularly any you are not happy with, because of any restrictions of your current camera. If you have none then perhaps you don't need to go to the expense of a DSLR yet. We have a thread currently running about P&S cameras and there are certainly some fanastic shots being posted, proving a DSLR is not aways necessary.

I hope you enjoy being a member and I look forward to talking to you further over the coming weeks.
    Cheers

    Hi Mike,
a big welcome to CiC from me.
Most of us find the technical aspects hard, that's why I ignore most and only use the one's I need.
This is a great site to learn and the tutorials and forums will be of great help to you.

I look forward to seeing your work; don't be too self-consious we are a good lot here and will not be too harsh.
Enjoy being a member and I'll keep a look out for your 1st picture post.
    Kind regards
    John

Hi and happy 2013 to everyone at CIC, I'm mat and despite being fairly computer-savvy I'm having a bit of a nightmare with the forum. I think I posted my thread to the wrong person last time (is that possible?) Anyhow I'm up and running now though I've tried to add a photo to one of the competitions and that hasn't worked yet despite understanding and following the instuctions, after pressing 'add a photo from your computer' nothing happens. Nothing. Still if a small picture appears at the end of this post, then that's sorted too.
Back to me, I live in France in the middle of a forest, a kilometre up in the Pyrenesse mountains so expect lots of pictures of insects and mountains. . .

Hi Mat, welcome back - it's worked this time. Don't know what the problem was before. Did you use the "Tinypic" method?

    Hi Mat,
Welcome to CiC, it's great that you have decided to join us.

Sometimes when you click the 'Click Here To Upload Photos From Your Computer' the button does not respond. I find the best thing to do is use the 'Go Advanced' button and upload from there, this has always worked for me.

I look forward to seeing more of your pictures and talking to you further.
Happy New Year to you and your family.
    Regards
    John

    Hi John,
that's a very nice upgrade, I bet that's a whole new learning curve.
I hope you post some of your pictures soon, I would love to see them, motor sports who wouldn't.

Don't forget you can edit your profile to add your real name and your location, if you like. Most of us use first name here, just seems to make things a little friendlier.

    Christo,
    welcome to CiC.
As you have only just started taking photography more seriously you have made a good choice in joining this site. The tutorials are second to none and if there is any additional information you require the forums will normally sort you out very quickly.

Hopefully you start posting you pictures as soon as you can, this IMO is the best way to learn; by getting feedback from other photograpers.
Enjoy being a member, it's great to have you with us.
    Kind regards
    John
