    Hi Xena,

Welcome to CiC - great to have you with us.

I'm assuming that you mean for a "Canon" (I don't think they make filters for cannon's -- it would probably slow down the steel ball when they fired it on the battlefield!)

First question would have to be "what kind of filter" (UV? CPL, ND, GND?) - need more information

Second question, what lenses are you using (so we know the diameter).

Third question - the best filters run into many hundreds of dollars - do you really have an unlimited budget?

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

As this is the Welcome Thread, allow me to welcome myself to the forums.

My name is Ryan, though professionally I tend to go by "Ahr" (which is the phoenetic spelling of my first initial). I live in a very small 'hamlet' (I don't think it can technically be considered a town since it is five square blocks and consists of a population of 50) called Luther in the state of Iowa here in the U.S. I moved here after a 10-year stint in San Francisco, California and am loving the difference in both ecological and social climates.

I found a passion for photography about 15 years ago and followed it as far as attending Brooks Institute of Photography, but like so many who allow their passion to dominate their lives, I became quite burned out on photography and wound up in a completely unrelated field.

Though I have continued to shoot as a hobby on a very limited basis, now that I am here in the middle of nowhere with fabulous surroundings, I feel the bug to delve back into things and see where it leads me (I'm in the process of putting together a part time portraiture business and scouting locations for my own landscape work).

As I have shot film for most of my life, I'm just now starting to take a serious leap into the world of digital photography and this sites tutorials are some of the most clear-cut and concise answers to many of my questions on quality. I'm sure more questions will pop up (in fact, one just did, so I'll post that in the appropriate forum next).

Anyway, thanks for allowing me the privilege to join you fine folks here at Cambridge in Colour and I look forward to having many debates on the world of digital photography in the future.

    Cheers

    Ahr Neely

    Hello all,

My name is Dr Nasseem Michael Malouf, an amateur photographer keen on improving my skills. I am a PhD in nutrition and a dietitian and recently published a book on lifestyle managemnt of Type 2 diabetes in which I included many straightforward photos to explain certain nutriton principles eg the sugar and fat in a food explained in teaspoons.

I live in Sydney Australia and work in private and hospital sectors.

Have always been keen on photography but had no formal training. I have recently done a couple of short courses and am very keen on improving/understanding photographic principles. I love your tutorials - and am slowly going through them.

A long way to go but joining you guys will certainly help. Looking forward to meeting you all on the site.

    Regards

    Nasseem

    Hi Nasseem,

Welcome to CiC - Great to have you with us

I think we must collect Doctors and Professors here - you're about the 4th off the top of my head!

As always, we'd be glad to help - the first thought that comes to mind though is that's it's an interactive process - usually best achieved one step at a time (much as the best way to build a wall is one brick at a time) - so in that vein (pun intended!) it's really helpful if you can ask questions - tell us what you need - and show us pictures that you'd like help or feedback with. Then you can take the suggestions & ideas onboard - "raise the bar" - and come back for round two.

    Looking forward to the process

    Hi Xarch

I also retired from being an architect 4 years ago and slid straight from record pics of building process to photography

I hope that you will retain the sense of design you already have and apply it to your creative photography; so many photographers now go on a course run by someone who went on a course...etc so that there is often nowhere near enough original thinking

Don't feel you need to photograph buildings; having retired you can now admit to yourself that the majority of modern buildings are actually ugly

But if you do, pay attention to vertical perspective as well as horizontal; it is rarely necessary for the vertical to be absolutely vertical, but it makes a lot of difference to apparent height as to whether you partly correct vertical convergence or exaggerate it

So, it seems, you've tried a few different brands over the years.

I'm a little late welcoming you in this thread as I think we have conversed elsewhere by now

Good to have you join us and I think you got to making your second post today, so that's great.

I also have a tendency to photograph birds and wildlife, it can be a challenge

    Hi Xena,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me, great to have you join us.

    I don't want to go into too much detail here in the intro thread, but I don't think it comes down to being as simple as "which brand" because this will depend upon;
    a) what sort of filters we are talking about; UV, CPL, ND (e.g. screw on) or GND (in a holder)
    b) what you want to use it for (UV for protection?)
    c) what your budget is
    d) PLUS - many of the filter manufacturers make different grades of filter, thus you might buy the cheapest grade of the recommended brand and be disappointed in the quality.

Best way to take this forward is for you to start a new thread in the General Photography Discussion forum I think, with a little more information so we can advise you better.

    Best regards,

    Hi Nasseem,

Yup, I can testify that joining this site will certainly help your understanding of photography, it might well have an adverse effect on your wallet though - photography can get expensive.

Anyway, welcome to the CiC forums, hope to have a follow up post or question from you soon.

    Hi dullierobre,

Welcome to the CiC forums and thanks for the kind words.

    This is an excellent place to learn so, to answer your question - almost any way you like;
    - Ask a photography related question
    - Post an image or two for comment and critique (C&C)
    - Post an image or two into one of the Challenges, we have two on the go; a rapid turnaround Mini Competition or the monthly Challenge, see the top of each thread for the simple 'rules'
    - Start an album (under the "Community" menu item above)

    Or do all four

Looking forward to you next post,
