Annesh - Hello and welcome. I am sure that you will be able to learn all about making wonderful pictures with help from people here on the CiC forum. One of the best ways of learning is, of course, to ask questions about the things to which you want to know answers. People on here will be able to provide the answers or give you advice about where you can get more information. And,m of course, to learn you must practice making pictures. Practice, practice, practice .... and then practice some more. That is the way to really get to know how to make pictures.

Hey all, I'm Meredith. I'm an Australian/American (born in the US, raised in Australia) who lives in southern China for now. Though I've been taking pictures for a while, I only really got into photography about six months ago, so very much a beginner. I found this site through the tutorials and liked that the forum seemed to have a strong emphasis on learning, which is what I was looking for. I have a Canon EOS 600D, an unexpected upgrade/impulse buy when I was replacing my point-and-shoot camera, which I wrecked a bit in 2011 (why breaking my camera made me decide it was a good idea to get a more expensive one, I am not sure). Looking forward to getting into all the good stuff on this site!

Meredith - Once you start trying to apply reason and logic to the way we go about pursuing our photography hobby, then things are getting bad! I'm afraid you've just got to give in and let it lead you.

Great to have you here. I'm glad that you like what you've seen so far. I hope it stays that way and that you continue to enjoy the forum and learn from being part of it.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Good afternoon

My name is Colin and I'm based in Virginia, Co. Cavan part Irelands Lakelands district. I stumbled across this fantastic website by accident while searching for Photography tutorials and having browsed it for the past couple of days, I thought it time to take the plunge and join the community. I purchased a Canon 350d a couple of years ago but I've only been” paddling around in the shallow end”, dabbling so to speak without any real understanding of what I’m doing or how I’m achieving results, but now that children have arrived, I feel the time has come, to capture and record precious moments that would otherwise be lost forever. I enjoy outdoor/portrait/landscape photography.

I am currently taking a photography course and plan to upgrade my kit (camera and lenses, sigma 18 – 50mm and sigma 55 -200mm) in the coming months and look forward to the communities comments and suggestions as I am a complete novice but am determined to improve.

Thanks again for providing such a helpful and interactive website and look forward to learning from the knowledge of other members on here.

    Thanks
    Colin

Colin, I think the one great thing about this forum is that everyone involved remembers that they were once in exactly the same position. Nobody arrived on earth with a camera in their hand and the knowledge how to make wonderful images. They all had to learn. That's why helping people to learn is at the heart of what CiC is about.

So, I hope you enjoy it and to seeing you putting up questions and images for comment and criticism.

Hi there. I am new here and looking forward to finding my way around. I live about 90 kilometers south of Canad's capital on a protected wetlands were I indulge in some nature photography. Have issues with a lack of water resistant gear and had a recent--last fall-- catastrophic episode with a kayak and a D90 and as a result am looking forward to hear what others use in the way of photographic gear . Especially in kayaks and canoes. Cheers and hope to see some of your pics soon. Derik Hodgson.

Hi Derik and welcome to CiC.

Afraid I can't help you with you Kayak and camera dunking question. Would be best to repost your question in the General Photography forum to get answers from those who do know.

Sounds like an interesting place where you live - hope you'll be able to post some images soon to give us an idea. There are many keen wildlife photographers here, myself included.

You might want to update your profile with your name and location, so it appears alongside all your posts.

    Cheers,

    Dave

    Hello Everyone
My name is Eddie and i come from Solihull in the UK. I have been shooting digital for the past 6 years and just love taking photo's. Back in the day my first camera was an Olympus OM1n, which has always had a warm place in my heart, it was my first camera and it was completely manual so i learned a lot from it. I just love digital now and couldn't even think of going back to film. I now use Nikon D700 and D300 camera's with various lenses and really enjoy processing using photoshop. I've been a member for quite a while but never thought of posting until now.
Hope to learn lots more here and hope i can contribute a little too.

looking forward to meeting you soon

    Eddie

Eddie - I'm very glad you did and that this will be the first of many, many posts you will make on the forum. Great to have you on board.

By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Bruce - I hope that you'll find that one of the great strengths of CiC is the fact that people seek to be constructive and helpful on the forum, not condemnatory just for the sake of it, which seems to happen in some other places. The whole ethos of this site is about learning and your own sentiment sums up exactly what I think life is about.

So, I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to seeing some of your images.

Hi my name is Donna and I am from Perth, Western Australia. I am a newbie who has a hubby that does not research before he buys!!! He came home last week with "the deal of the century"!! He purchased a second hand Canon 1D MkIII with two lenses and now won't pick it up as he says it's far too complicated!! So rather than have it sit in the cupboard I have decided to try and learn. Looking forward to sharing and learning from other members here

    Regards
    Donna

Welcome to the forum Donna, I'm sure you'll get any advice you need if you just ask!

Well, you've got me jealous. I wish someone would mistakenly buy a professional camera, and leave it for me!

Hi to those on Cambridge in Colour. My name is Kathy and I am a very amateur photographer. I enjoy traveling and the resulting photographs, some macro shots as well as portraits. I recently upgraded from a Canon Rebel XTi to a Canon 7D and have not yet bought any new lenses but need advise on what to buy. I currently have a EF-S 28-55 (not IS) and a EF 70-300 f/4-5.6. Any advise would be appreciated.

Hello Kathy and welcome to CiC. We're all amateurs on here (well, a few do make soem cash out of their hobby) and the one good thing about this forum is that it is all about everyone helping each other to learn and improve their knowledge and skills.

As for the lens advice. What I'd say is make your second post in the 'Digital Cameras & Equipment' section of teh forum and post up this question, More people will see it there. Try and give us much detail as you can about what you think you need/want and why ... and why your current lenses don't do all that you want. That will help people guide your thinking.

I hope you enjoy being part of CiC.

    Hello All.
My name is Pat and I am new here. I live in Seattle, Wa. I have always liked taking photos and have recently gotten back into the craft when I was given a used Minolta 7D two years ago. I just purchased a new Sony A65. I consider myself an amateur photographer so I will be asking a lot of questions.
    Respectfully
    Pat

    Hi
I am a newie at"manual" digital photography as I have been using my 40d camera for shooting my boys and team playing football. I have been using a 150-500m lens and set on automatic with some reasonable photos. I decided a few months ago that I needed to learn how to use the manual settings, so off I went to have some lessons and I have discovered the real meaning of photography. I have now upgraded my camera body to a used 5d mark, so now into a full frame camera. I am quiet excited about my new adventures. Sorry, forgot to say that I live in a small country town in Western Australia...actually my photography teacher recommended this site.
