Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi all

My name is Juan and I finally join this forum after reading all CiC documentation for some years.

I'm addicted to photography for a few years now and I have different cameras from compact to FF.

I love sport, landscape, macro and animals and I always want to learn more.

I'm getting a proper level on the technical area, but I still have a lot to learn about composition.

The strange thing for lot of photographers is that I do all my workflow using linux and free software.

I hope I can learn from all the people on this forum as much as I already learn from the documentation.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi, this is my first time here. I noticed this site when I was "googleing" Best DSLR of Macro Photography and I was impressed by how informative this forum is so I wanted to join this beautiful community:

My name is Ovidiu and, obviously, my time and money has been consumed by photography and it gaved me in return some of my best moment and enjoyments in my life. A spark in my soul started with a phone taking shots of flowers and landscapes and then I made a huge leap to DSLR and I started to learn on my own about photography ever since and I plan to keep doing it until I can no longer press the shutter button.

    Adam, James, Juan, Fabian

Hello and welcome to CiC. Thank you all for deciding to join this forum.

Adam - You're right. There is a lot to learn and the secret is taking it at a pace that you can cope with. We each learn in different ways and at different speeds. Don't push yourself so hard that you get turned off photography. There will be moments of frustration, but CiC exists to help answer some of the questions and help you learn.

James - I hope you'll put that experience to work on here helping and advising others on their journey along the learning curve.

Juan - I'm glad you've decided to 'sign up' to the forum and I hope you will feel that it was a good decision.

... my time and money has been consumed by photography and it gave me in return some of my best moment and enjoyments in my life
And that, Fabian, is what it should be about for all of us amateurs

Adam and Juan - So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hello, my name is Chris and I am from Colorado. I have been reading the tutorials here and they are great so I decided to become a member. I have a minor in digital media/still frame but haven't really got much into photography since then. I have finally started back and am shooting 100% in RAW now so I will force myself to utilize photoshop and learn post-processing. I am mainly interested in low-light/night landscapes, any direction to point me in on this forum for questions regarding focus tips and F-stop/focus layering with those conditions?

Thanks a bunch for the tutorials, extremely informative and effective.

    Cheers

Hello Julie, and a very warm welcome to CiC. You have got yourself an excellent camera and lenses that can create great images. Get out there and get shooting! You can get lots of advice here from some fantastic photographers. However, I would stay with P mode for a while and get to know the camera. When you are ready, move on to A and Tv (mind you, there are some here who would advocate jumping right in to M). Whatever, take some pictures and if you'd like some friendly feedback, don't be afraid to post in the forums. We are a very friendly and helpful bunch here

    Dave

If you want to learn, you have come to the right place. Not only are there some great photographers here, they are always ready to share. Hope you enjoy being a member.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi Julie, I just joined as well and am reading up on a lot of forums and tutorials. As someone with a bit of experience and was new to DSLR a few years ago, I can say the biggest step you should take, and take it soon is getting off auto, the best way to learn your camera is to get into manual, aperture priority and shutter priority, its not as bad or overwhelming as you think. I am sure there are lots of discussions here about them.

I shot forever in JPEG because I refused to learn and explore more techniques and the whole world of post-processing/photoshop. After a day at work (it was slow) of reading F-stop layering and focus layering and seeing the results I now have taken the plunge to only shoot in RAW and start to post-process. Its amazing and almost limitless. I wish I would have started a lot sooner, so I say dial to M/AP/SP and start learning from experience.

Although- like Dave said, stay on auto for a bit and get used to the camera itself but I'd take the plunge sooner than later. My laziness and refusal to learn CS and post-processing has cost me a lot of wonderful shots becoming amazing shots.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Thanks Dave,
Yes, I am very exited to have such a beauty, I feel like a Ferrari owner and not having a driver's license. There is a lot to learn. I am taking a topic at a time here. My 1D mark iii, is big and heavy, I had to buy a couple of lenses that were in my budget.
I'm not sure if I made the right choice but I bought, 3. The first one is "The pancake" Canon EF 40mm .3m/.98ft, second one is a 50mm .45m/1.5ft and lastly is a Tamron (that I just love) 28-30mm AF 6.3.

I hope I can buy another one to have a nice set, but I do not know what to buy, the L series was recommended but, for that I need to save a bit more.

Thank you for your words of encouragement,

Any advise on an additional lens would be appreciated,

    Ben - newbie in Chicago

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi Ben,

You are welcome. The best advice to give anyone who is new to the hobby is to get out there and get shooting (Chicago must be warming up by now ) , develop your style and find what interests you. There are so many aspects of photography: landscapes, city scapes, portraits, wildlife, family and pets, specialisms such as macro, and so on. All will place different demands on you and your equipment.

If you ask for lens advice in the forums here, two questions will be asked up front: what do you shoot, and what limitations do you find your existing kit places on you? (Plus budget, but that's definitely third). The lenses you now have will give you a good start in almost any type of photography (I'm guessing there is a zero missing off the long end of your Tamron ) so I really wouldn't buy any more right now.

You ask about L series lenses. Yes they are the Ferrari of lenses (though being a Brit I'd probably say Rolls Royce ): they have superb Image Quality (usually referred to as IQ), superb build quality, are weather sealed (like your camera), and come with a price tag and weight to match! Only you can decide when and if you need that. It's often said that what goes on a few inches behind the camera is more important than what's on the front of it.

I hope that you can get out and enjoy taking pictures, and will soon be sharing some of your images in the forums.

    Good luck,

    Dave
