A very warm welcome Brian. I am intrigued by the second part of your Username, particularly as you're using the Scots spelling (without the 'e') as opposed to the Irish/American. If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy being part of CiC.

Hi, I am a new member but I have been "lurking" for a few months. After being into film before marriage and kids, I have jumped back (kids are grown and out of college) into photography with a DLSR as my hobby. What I am using is a Nikon D5100 with 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses, but after unhappy results with the 55-200, I have added the 70-300. I am a big fan of Joe's (Lakeland) pictures and procedures. We visit a lot of the same spots, but my pictures do not compare! Wildlife will be my focus.

My name is Stacy. I am new to photography and joined to make friends and network to build my skills. I previously owned a floral shop and was the primary florist in our area and within a 30 mile radius for weddings. I coordinated and held annual bridal expos and our shop provided bouquets, decorations for event and reception, tuxedo rentals, decoration rentals, wedding coordinating, and Photography (which my husband provided). Since we sold the shop, my husband has left photography and I am now pursuing it with the intention to return to weddings this time as the photographer. I love the creative expressions and art that can be achieved and produced through photos. Looking forward to meeting many of you and learning from your work!

Welcome, Bill. Great to have you join us on CiC. I hope you enjoy being part of the forum and find it helpful in terms of extending your knowledge and skills. You're one of a number of us on here who used to be into photography before other things in life took over, only for us now to find our way back when we have the time etc to enjoy it.

Stacy - I'm sure you're in a very good position (with all the networks and contacts that you'll have) to pursue your ambition in terms of wedding photography. You'll be well aware of how challenging it can be.

I hope that being part of CiC helps you to build those skills and that you enjoy being part of the forum whilst you do.

And I'd like to welcome you to CiC.

The thing to remember is that gear doesn't make pictures. You do. Sure, good quality gear helps the process. But it's going to produce rubbish if the person behind the camera doesn't know how to make great images.

So as well as taking part in competitions, I hope you'll take part in other sections of the forum, where you can ask questions, get advice and post up images fro comment.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hi, I'm Paul and I live in Cambridge, the original one. I am an environmental scientist who has had the opportunity to develop his amateur skills in lots of countries around the world. I started as a boy in the world of film and switched to digital when the cost and quality justified it. A few years ago I had the chance to get a Leica M9 (I used old film Leicas for many years) - it doesn't make me a better photographer, but it sure shows up what I need to get better at. I also use a Ricoh GRDIV (it just sits on my belt when I don't want to carry anything else).

My experience is mostly in landscape, photography at work (environmental, engineering & construction), and that broad area of no man's land between travel snaps and street photography. I am now getting excited by people and portrait photography, where I have a lot to learn. (Edit: I should add that I have seen and worked through Colin Southern's excellent school of portraiture lessons)

I have a website (shown in my profile and signature below) and would welcome comments on my work.

Hi Paul and welcome, though I can see you've been active for a while. I didn't make the connection till I looked at your web site and saw the picture of the choir master / cricketer which I remember very well. You've obviously got a great deal of experience and expertise, and I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

If you are looking for feedback, it is best to post the image in one of the forums with a specific question, rather than a general what do you think.

    Cheers,

    Dave

    HI,
My name is Mark. I am from South Florida. I am new to digital photography. My first camera was a Nikkormat I purchased in 1973. I am an optometrist so my backgound is in optics. I recently purchased a Nikon D5200 and I am using a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens. My main reason for the new camera is that I have a new grandaughter in Washington,DC. I would also like to get back into photography. My main interest is learnig how to edit in post production. I am soon going to purchase Lightroom . One question I have now is: should I wait for Lightroom 5 to come out before purchasing or shoild I purchase Lightroom 4 now? Any thoughts? I hope if I have any questions regarding using Lightroom you can help. I hope I'm not to frustrated when I start. Does anyone have any advice in starting to use Lightroom? I would appreciate any and all advice.
    Mark

First thing - If you click here, you'll see I've copied your post into the Post Processing section of the forum. More people than would see it here are likely to view it in that section and come back with responses.

Second thing - Welcome to CiC. I hope you enjoy being involved and find it a useful resource for learning.

By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello Mark, and a warm welcome to CiC.

I hope you enjoy your new granddaughter (bit of a drive up to DC though), but since you are lucky enough to live in South Florida there are so many photo opportunities there.

I am a Lightroom user and I love it. I haven't decided whether to upgrade to LR5 when it comes out, but I think I'll wait a while because I don't really need any of the extra functionality. On the other hand, I usually upgrade sooner rather than later, but like to give it a month or two to get any bugs ironed out - so really up to you. If you want to get going, I would get LR4, but that is just me.

Here are many LR users here - so I don't think you'll lack for support

It would be good if you could update your profile with your real name and where you are in the world, so it appears alongside all your posrs.

Look forward to hearing more from you,

    Dave
