You're in luck, Deward. Although called Cambridge in Colour because it was started up whilst site owner Sean (McQ) was at University, he's now back in California and that is where the nerve-centre of CiC now is.

Minnesota in summer; Florida in the winter. Now that seems a rather nice idea!

Great to have you here. I hope that as well as helping you learn even more, that you'll also share all that knowledge and experience in order to help others learn.

    Hi to all:

I recently purchased my first DSLR a Canon 60d (have been taking digitals photos of my kids and grandkids for about 6 years tho on point and shoots) and am going to try to make learn and make photography my second career. In my learning endeavors I heard about you and have decided to read all that I can find here, learn, grow and share as a photographer.
Any criticisms and/or critiques are gratiously accepted.

    Thanks

    Tim

Hello Tim and a very warm welcome to CiC.

I hope that your experience lives up to what you heard and that being part of this forum does indeed help you grow your knowledge and skills. That's certainly the aim and there are lots of people on here who feel that sharing their experience is what it should be about.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

    Hi all.

This is my second post (already added one in this month's photo comp; wrong way around, sorry) and I have been to the site before and looked over it's tutorials.

I've always been a keen photographer, however it's only during the last couple of months I've really become addicted to it. I mainly do landscapes (living in Snowdonia, North Wales gives me plenty of options!).

I don't use a DSLR but a good standard Canon SX40 HS Bridge, with a lot of DSLR like functions. This is a fantastic camera but is fairly limited with f/stops (max of 8), so for evening shots I have to be out quite late past the 'golden hour', but I usually get the shots I want. The other limitation is that I can only shoot in JPEG, so lose detail as soon as the shot is taken.

All post-processing is mainly within Lightroom, occasionally Photoshop CS2.

Here's a taste of what I do, and the link to my Flickr stream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ealandscapes/

This image is of Pont Pen y Benglog, at the head of Nant Ffrancon on the A5. Normally, you'd see Tryfan peaking above the bridge, but the pea soup-like cloud wouldn't allow this!

Thanks guys, I hope to continue learning and looking at other peoples' work

Thank you for the warm welcome I changed it already, but it's still the same...I guess.

Hi Elton, and a warm welcome to CiC (from not too far away).

Thanks for including a link to your flickr page, it gives a good idea of what you are about. It looks as if you are not afraid to get your feet wet to get the composition you want .

As well as learning from others, do post some images and ask for feedback - it's always constructive on this site, and a great way to learn. Don't forget the tutorials - they are excellent!

A couple of questions, if I may. A lot of your shots are at very slow shutter speed - do you hand hold (you must have steady hands!), or use some form of support. Also, you refer to the maximum aperture as f/8. I don't know the camera at all, but googling it says f/2.5 - f/5.8. So are the slow speeds what you want, or what you have to get in low light?

I don't think we need to be too bothered about that, Elton.

Great to have you here and I hope you will enjoy being involved in the forum for a long time to come.

    Hi Dave

    Thanks for the welcome.

Well, I don't use a tripod, as at the moment can't really afford one; plus they can be pretty cumbersome up in the mountains so I plan on getting one of those small ones. I tend to rest the camera on whatever I have available, usually a rock with a rolled up tea-towel to get the camera level and to protect it from scratches!

I do hand-hold some shots, but again I'm still learning and experimenting with shutter speeds. And yes the camera does go up to f/8 Unfortunately, this does limit me. I've learnt recently that I don't really have to shoot at speeds as slow as I have been to get the effects I want with water, as I know I can lose detail when shooting at 15 seconds.

And no, definitely not afraid to get my feet wet, have done a number of times, literally! I'm a firm believer in that if you want to get the shot you want, you have to get down and dirty sometimes, and in my case, putting myself at risk also (but I'm sensible enough not to risk too much for the sake of a shot...).

Hi everybody! My name is Kay and I'm a keen amateur. I have an old Canon 300d but have recently switched to a more versatile Canon sx50 bridge camera which I find suited to more all purpose photography without the need to carry lots of lenses around x

Hi Kay, and welcome on board.

I hope that you enjoy your time here. I expect you've already had a good look around before signing up, so you'll know that this is a friendly and supportive place to help everyone develop (there are some extraordinarily skilled photographers here who don't mind sharing), and I hope you'll share some photos with us soon. Don't forget the tutorials either, some of the best on the net.

It would be good if you could update your profile with your real name as "Kay" (you can get there starting at "settings" at the top of the screen), then it will appear alongside all of your posts.

    Cheers,

    Dave

Hi all, my name is Keith and I live in Manchester UK. I have been taking photos with an SLR since my late twenties
and I am now retired. Most of that time I have been lazy and have used decent cameras as 'point and shoot' on auto settings. I now want to do better and am on a steep learning curve. I joined because this seems to be a very supportive and friendly site and I look forward to getting advice from more experienced posters.

Thank you Keith and I hope it continues to live up to that first impression. I hope, too, that you find there are lots of people on here very willing to share their knowledge and experience in a constructive and helpful way.

By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Hi you all. First of all please excuse eventual faults in writing English, as my mother language is Catalan and Castillian (Spanish).
I've found this forum when looking for tutorials to learn digital photography. The tutorials are a wonder. Thanks a lot.
On my 30's I had a Canon AE1 with several lenses until i discovered that most of the time this equipment was left at home because it was too heavy. I ended up buying a compact camera which I used mostly on Auto since I never undertood the "misterious equation" involving aperture, sutter speed and ISO.
Later I had my first digital, a Kodak 210 (1.3 Mp), and since then several basic compacts with an increased number of Mp.

Eventually I bought a Canon SX100IS. This compact has Auto, but also Manual control, as well as A and S priority. And here started my interest to master the photo technique. I experienced with Manual and with A and S priorities and I loved the results, because for the first time I coul see the different results that could be obtained changing parameters.
Now, I wanted more and I have just purchased an Olympus XZ-1 with an Electronic View Finder VF3, and I am learning how to use that wonderful little camera.
I hope to learn many things in this forum. Thanks in advance
    Juli

Juli - Your written English is very good. It is very easy to understand what you write.

I think you are the only person currently active on the forum who is from Catalonia. Our two locations have much in common politically at the moment.

I hope this forum does help you to improve your photographic knowledge and skills. There are many people with a large amount of experience on the forum and they will always be happy to answer questions and have discussion online with you.

Hello everyone at Cambridge. I am new to photography and am excited to learn all I can. I have been admiring others pictures for years and wishing I could take good pictures. I purchased my first SLR camera a Nikon D7100. I have taken a couple classes and just need to go play and practice.

This is a great site for a beginner. I have learned a lot from lurking around here. Hopefully I will be able to post some pics in the near future for some constructive criticism. I can take it.

    Mike
