There is a State park close by, and I love to go there to take pictures. I usually drag my kids and their friends there so I can practice on them. I've gotten a picture of a bobcat, but I definitely couldn't get close enough with the kit lens to get a good, clear close up. Same with all the baby ducks. (Although I don't think they would have had the same bite.) Tons of beautiful trees and a lake, so possibilities are endless. Oh, and I practice a lot on my dog

Hello from sunny Florida! This appears to be a great site for drawing on a vast knowledge base under a constructive tone - it seems very comfortable. This is important to me, since you may endure some pretty stupid questions as I get my feet wet

I am highly interested in photography and believe I have an eye for it. I just need to develop the reflexes to recognize the moment before it passes, and the understanding to make the proper adjustment to my camera and lens to ensure I capture the image. I always have my camera, and am not shy about taking my truck into woods or through gates to get a shot off at something that catches my attention, i.e. a canopied river or orange groves on rolling hills under a magenta sky.

I look forward to opening a dialog with the seasoned pros here and gaining some insight and guidance. Thank you for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the CiC forums from me, glad to have you join us.

I know exactly what you mean about developing an eye for a composition, or 'seeing' the event before it happens, both come with practice.

We can help with the former, for example if you post some pictures (in the appropriate thread) for critique, assuming they're not shot too 'tight', we can advise on alternative crops.

For the latter, in my experience, it generally comes down to having a familiarity with the subject and/or location; if a criiter does "x", after a while, you learn that usually "y" follows, then you can be ready. In terms of lighting, just be aware that the sun moves 15 degrees an hour, so in three hours that's 45 degrees, in 6 hours that's 90 degrees, now you can work out what time to come back and have it coming from a certain direction.

Thus I would advise revisiting the same location a few times over days/weeks/months, rather than always going somewhere new, at least in the beginning. After a bit, you'll know which locations work best at which times of the day (and season).

Anyway, that's all a bit specific for the intro thread, but do post any questions in the appropriate forum to ensure a better visibility and more answers. Don't worry about them being "stupid", there's no such thing

I have a EF 28-90 and a 70-300 USM
I love to take pictures of my little daughter and hopefully try to get in to real estate architectural photography.
Hopefully soon can get the 10-22 lens to start practicing some wide angle shoots.

I have a funny story as a new photographer. I had reserved a budget $150-$250 to buy a Camera.. I read articles and made a lot of research, I ended up buying Sony HX1 for $399 .. I used it for a month then I found my self returning this Camera to the Store and replacing it with Sony A380 with 2 lenses 18-55mm and 75-300mm !!!

I don't know what is going to happen to me next !!! I am still having difficulty with the size of the DSLR and the burden of replacing the lenses for the different situations in comparison to my old compact HX1 !! .. but i am enjoying it a lot..

Out of interest, is that like a 3 year degree course from doing it as a hobby, or an evening class to get you started?

Best way to improve is plenty of practice plus honest and constructive critique of the images; so if you do the first bit and post a few pics here, we can help with the second bit.

Where abouts in the world are you?
What lenses do you have available for the D40x?

Yes, the extra size, weight and complexity can be a burden if you're used to less.

What sort of subjects do you like to photograph?
Perhaps we could see some examples; for critique, or in the mini-competitions?

I was in your position in 2007 and started with a bridge camera, one of those point and shoots that look like a DSLR, but aren't, it did me well (with RAW and the usual DSLR P, A, S, M modes) learning, but eventually I blew a small fortune on a DSLR and I have just added two lenses

Have you got any film lenses you might consider using? (what brand) or is the first task to identify a whole new system?
