    Greetings esteemed CiC Luminaries!

I have been lurking in the shadows here for a number of months now.

Once upon a time I wanted to get into DSLR Photography and stumbled on to this site in my web surfing. I was trying to research what to do about this unnatural desire I had to get into still photography. Whether to pursue this endeavor or just go ahead and shoot myself in the foot, avoid the rush later, and have done with it! As it turns out, this site has been the number one most helpful thing I could have run into and I am thrilled to have found it early on.

The site has helped me understand where the bar is set, and better still is helping me to find a way to someday maybe get within throwing distance of it.

At first, I never posted simply because I didn’t yet have any gear with which to work. Deciding which way to go with that. Then, a budget breaker or two later, I managed to pick up a tad bit of kit to dive into the big middle of it with. I had hoped that someday, when I could consider my efforts at least up to the category of cr**, I could maybe toss something out there and maybe get some help.

Well, that day has finally arrived! I finally shot something I would definitely consider in the category of cr**! Ironically, I couldn’t be happier about it! Of course, I’m easily amused but it may be a small step in the right direction.

As a new kid on the block, it may take me a time or three to get the hang of posting photos and navigating as a member. So before I completely botch up trying to post a photo out in the “world” (forums) and further embarrass myself, I just wanted to thank everyone here as well as the owners, admin., and mods. Never have I seen a site of this kind with so much useful information, knowledgeable people, and exceptional photographs in one place. Very dynamic and the hits just keep coming. Not to mention an international site where everyone seems to get on so well together. If this is what photography can do for the World, then I would have to say we need more of it!

And I do have a very important Life Question for the Resident Expert on the subject. Been contemplating this for a while now. Guru Rob? Why can we not ascertain the direction the train went by looking at its tracks?

Darn sneaky trains! I gotta get a life!

    All the best,
    Terry

    Hi Terry,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me, it's good to have an appreciative new member - yes, flattery earns brownie points

If you need some guidance on image posting, this thread may help; HELP THREAD: How can I post images here?

I look forward to seeing your proud, if cr**, image(s) soon
Anyway, I think we should be the judge of their cr**iness or otherwise, don't you?

btw, it is rumoured that on a still autumnal day, near trees, one might be able to discern train directionality from the 'whooshed' leaf patterns nearby.
Or, if it is wounded and bleeding oil (as they often are), observe which way the oil drip has splashed as it hit the sleepers (ties).

I think you'll fit in fine here at CiC, just don't point that Canon at me though, it might go off

    Cheers,

Greetings to you, too Terry. Long may you post here.
Re the Big Bad Bar - you set your own here, no problems. Just don't go throwing it too hard, eh? Too much valuable clicking type equipment around, y'know.

Thank you for the Welcome Dave and Kit!

And thank you for that link, Dave. I hope to be putting that to good use shortly.

I'll certainly try to keep this Loose Canon lashed securely to the deck! That puppy has a hair trigger and is subject to go off at any time! I have a shot or two of my gut as I was lowering it on the neck strap to prove it! Probably my best shots so far! Sure filled the frame!

Guess you're right about the bar, Kit! The inadvertent shots of the gut are telling me I need to stay out of them!

    Hi All
Visiting different photography sites came across cic and found it quite interesting and decided to join. I do not know if I am at the right place to introduce myself, if I am not please point me in the right direction. I am a retired senior, I am originally from India but Canada is home now and has been for the last 45 years. Started taking pictures with a Kodak 120 box camera, kept moving with times and went through the different cameras and models, finally got myself a dslr which I am thoroughly enjoying. My interests are travel and cityscapes and of course being a proud grand father a lot of pictures of the young ones. Looking forward to keep on learning from the members input.
    cheers.

    Hi Jalal,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me, it is great to have you join us.
This is exactly the right place for this intro post.

Did photography occur in any part of your working life or was it simply a hobby?
Which DSLR and lens(es) did you get?

If you have any questions for us, just ask and hoepfully we will see some of your images before long.

    Best regards,

Hi Dave, Thanks for the welcome, photography has always been a hobby, sometimes serious and sometimes not so serious. Will post some pics soon as i get the hang of the site navigation etc. I am not that computer savvy and being senior i operate at a leisurely pace.

Hi all; I just registered with CiC - it looks like a great site. After 50 odd years shooting film with several Minolta bodies and numerous lenses, decided to opt for a high end digital camera without interchangeable lenses; got a Panasonic DMC-FZ50 and couldn't be happier. I'm a retired electrical engineer, busier now than when I was working, and enjoying life in Los Angeles CA and environs. I look forward to participating in the forums and posting images...

    HI, Dave;
I like to shoot nature stuff while hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains and other local areas. I volunteer with the local police department, and do some shooting (with my camera) to record some of our surveillance activities. I am a member of our local Elks Lodge, and photograph functions there for the lodge, And I am a member of a local photo club and participate in our competitions. I carry my camera just about everywhere (often my Panasonic DMC-ZS3, which is small but has the same great 12 to one Leica zoom that my good DMC-50Z has). I shoot graffiti and send the pictures to our local LAPD graffiti officer, and have identified several graffiti miscreants by comparing the pictures with Myspace entries. And I seem to ramble on a lot,
    Cheers - Jim S.

    Hi, Jim, and welcome;

Do you just compare by browsing around, or do you use any automation? Query By Image Content (QBIC) is something that's been bubbling for some time, as you probably know, and seems to be at least approaching broad usability. Grafitti would probably be a kind of content that would lend itself to that approach.

    Cheers,
    Rick

I understand that graffiti is vandalism but you have to admire how these "taggers" get their works in such impossible locations. And no I would not want to be the business owner who has to clean my building of paint.
