About a year ago the traffic control box on our corner got tagged. I took a picture of the tag, which had a unique name included; I searched for that name on Myspace and came up with a user profile page that had a picture almost identical to mine, of the same traffic control box tag. I passed this information on to our graffiti cop; I believe he tracked down the person on the profile, because that tag never reappeared and the profile was taken down shortly thereafter. Since then I have been able to associate two other local tags with Myspace profiles.
Not very exciting, but it keeps me out of the bars...

Hello Everyone,

Just introducing myself...

I first starting taking pictures (B&W) about 40yrs ago on a simple camera I won by sending in biscuit (cookie) wrappers. I then bought a second hand SLR (Konica FS1) about 30yrs ago and used it until 2004, by then I had acquired a 135mm telephoto lens, a 28mm wide angle lens, reversing rings and extension tubes for macro work, and teleconverters for increasing the focal length. Konica had stopped making SLR cameras when I bought but I managed to get most things second hand and I learnt a huge amount about photogrpahy from that simple kit. The camera had a motorwind for the film and an auto exposure (which I used on shutter priority most of the time) but no auto focus.

Then in 2004 I bought a Canon Powershot A80 and so began my introduction to digital photography. What a change! Started to take loads more photos but stopped printing them. Then I realised I was missing huge chunks of family history and photographic records with no guarantee that my digital files would remain in a usable state. So I began to experiment with printing methods and after trying many options, still feel that the photographic print is a best all-rounder. The quality of the pictures (up to 8x10 in) I can get get from that camera still amazes me!

A year or two with a Kodak superzoom camera (12x) got me hooked on the large zoom range and I've just bought a Canon Powershot SX20 IS. So I've not reached the heights of dSLRs yet but I'm still enjoying the freedom from multiple lenses!

Anyway, enough reminiscing! Thanks for a great forum and tutorial section, I particularly liked the details on sensor sizes and their impact on the lens design and image capture. After reading those I was more than ever impressed with the little A80 and what it can do.

Hi Y'all,
The name is Matt, most people call me Gunner, and if you find me in trouble then its Matthew Ryan McGeary lol. I currently have a Nikon D90 with the 18-105 VR, 55-200 VR, and 35mm 1.8 Nikkor lenses, along with a Nikon SB-600 speedlight. I am looking to add a Nikon D300 or D300s to the flock as well as the Tamron 24-70 2.8, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Macro, and the Tamron 60mm f2.8 Macro lenses, plus 2 more SB-600 speedlights, the MB-D10 Battery grip and the Sekonic i358 light meter to the flock of equipment I have. I am a semi-pro/semi-amateur photographer that is enjoying every opportunity I get to get behind a camera. I am going to be starting school with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division to get my bachelor's degree here in the middle of July. In the end of July I unfortunately am being forced to be the photographer for my sister's wedding and have dreaded every minute of doing it so far but I have no choice but to do it, don't ask will take too long to try to explain as to why I have no choice. Let's just say that my sister is being a major Bridezilla and won't answer any of the questions I ask her as to what pictures she wants or any of the details. I hate being blind-sided like this, but it will be a great experience for me and great teaching tool because if nothing else it has taught me that I never want to work for a family member. I also enjoy sports photography and am getting the opportunity to photograph some of the shooting pros in USPSA at the Area 8 Championships this year and the Nationals in Las Vegas, NV this summer. That is one of the reasons I want to get the D300 or D300s because of the faster frame rate for the action shots when shooting the pros like Rob Leatham, Travis Tomasie, Max Michel, KC Eusebio, Dave Sevigny and the list just keeps on going. I am already the photographer for a few of the local clubs in the area that holds the USPSA and IPSC events and am enjoying every minute of that. I love it because I go and help set up the matches on Saturday and shoot my Ruger SR9 and then on Sunday I'm shooting the D90. Well I'm sure this is already more information than anyone really wants to know so I'll just end by saying this. I hope to learn a lot and hopefully pass that knowledge on to someone else here during my stay on the forum. My motto in life: Learn something new everyday, Have fun, Be active, and above all else keep shooting!!

Welcome Gunner,

Great introduction and we feel for your dilemma with the wedding gig. One suggestion regarding the event, prepare samples for your sister of what you plan to contribute and I am sure you will get he answers you are looking for. Better yet, show them to either your mother or the mother of the groom and I will bet you will finally get a response from your sister. Good luck on your studies and feel free to post any of your current photos or from the wedding. By the way, try to get releases signed from members of the wedding so you can use the images in your future career.

Hey Matt and welcome. I'm new here myself and relatively new to photography as well. I have your camera and share your wish list to some degree. Regarding your wedding dilemma - I would suggest the following:

Be true to yourself. I suspect that no matter what you do, your sister will be a bitch about it. That being the case, you owe it to yourself to do the job in such a way that YOU would be proud of your work regardless of what anyone else might think. Always walk away from anything you do with your (artistic) integrity intact - or a wad of cash to ease the pain. It's one or the other - both if you get good enough. If she's getting free photography and giving no guidance, then she really can't blame anyone but herself if she doesn't get what she wants. Your life will still suck for awhile though.

There's a reason surgeons don't operate on loved ones.

Then again I've been divorced ten years this July. Blessing in disguise.

I'm Josh from Cardiff UK.

I'm an entry level chap to all this D-SLR stuff and I'm about to purchase a Canon 550d with the 18-55 mm kit lens. I'm considering getting a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM prime lens (is it worth it?)

I predominantly do street photography, mainly architecture and city stuff.

What should I purchase for my second lens???

I used to be a straight out Fine Art Painter so I'm looking forward to some help and advice about all this jargon stuff from all you hard working people

I'll be purchasing within the next 14 days asap basically. I'm a little gutted actually because I'm heading to Edinburgh on Monday with a little 12 Megapixel Point and Shoot Panasonic, should be fun , Ah well.

I borrowed a Nikon D90 from University with a few lenses, which was really good fun and there are high quality cameras at my disposal to be borrowed, but I'm looking forward to having my own you know.

I like to shoot 'doorways' (Cardiff Bay area has a wealth of photo oppurtunities). 'Art Deco' buildings I find fascinating and of course those accidental moments you come accross in the city. IE spilt coffees and quirky stuff like that.

My images are usually still so I'm not worried about lenses that are brilliant with movement, more picture quality.

I'm not a Canon user, but found two reviews of the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM prime lens on a couple of sites that I refer to when considering a new lens. Don't know if you know them, but they do good tests against a standard.

Personally, I prefer the German site (Photozone).
