    Hello (virtual) Cambridge
I regard myself as a keen amateur. Although not new to photography I have only recently acquired a DLSR. My aim is to improve my photographic skill to a standard that justifies my equipment: Canon EOS 40D, EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, EF 50mm f1.4 USM. I have recently completed a 10 week evening class.
I am interested in landscapes (including panoramic stitching), non-macro abstracts, and HDR. But need to improve my basic skill, particularly composition, before trying stitching and HDR.

Hi everyone, I'm a new boy here, looking forward to learning from the tutorials and enjoying all your pictures. I have a Nikon D90 and a panasonic G1 and hope to post some of my own pictures, when I learn how !

I fell in love with photography because of the magic I could work in the darkroom. If I could have had someone else out taking the pics and bring me the film, I would have been very happy.

I was semi-pro for a while, shooting portraits and weddings and making a pretty good part-time income from it, but got out of photography until just last year. While my son was deployed in Afghanistan, he picked up a DSLR and took some great pictures of the countryside and the people he met while there. When he got home, he suggested we do a "Man-trip", traveling the 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We stopped at every overlook; went up every side trail; and shot more pictures in two weeks than I would have shot in a year back when I had to buy film. Digital photography has sure changed the face of photography.

I have a Canon Powershot SX20is, and a Nikon D5000 w/ 18-55mm f/3.5, 55-200mm f/4, and a 35mm f/1.4 lenses. I take pictures of anything and everything. During the winter, I do a lot of macro work, keeping the local florist in business, and when the weather is fit, I am out doing sunrises, sunsets, landscapes, street scenes, people, pets, and anything else that gets in the way of my lens.

By the way, I tend to be a little long-winded!
    Hi John,

Well, the only problem is you have answered all my normal questions, so the only thing left is for me to ask you to post some examples of your recent work. It's your own fault ....

    Hi Howard,

Well, like John above, most questions answered already, so I think the same for you, let's see some pics

Looking at your subsequent lens choices, me thinks you might have a view to upgrade to full frame eventually.

Ah, just thought of a question; where are you in the (real) world? a city/country will do.

    Thanks Dave for your welcome.

I have only owned the D90 for a few weeks but I had a 'windfall' to spend and in the last few weeks I have purchased . . . . deep breath.

    1. Nikkor AF-S 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G
    2. Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G
    3. Nikkor AF-S 12-24mm f/4 G
    4. Nikkor AF-S 85mm Micro f/3.5 G
    5. Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm VR f/2.8

That lot made a 'hole' in my windfall ?
Thanks also for the 'post image' link I will try and get some pictures on line soon.

Welcome to the group. Any reason for your particular choice of lenses?

Hello everyone. I am in northern Indiana in the U.S. I came to this site because I might be teaching a short nature program at the parks department. The nature program will include photography. I need to learn more to teach this segment. I have a 8 megapixel camera (not SLR).

    Hi ncworkshop,

Good for you to take the trouble, although it is quite a big subject, especially if I begin to imagine the sorts of things people might photograph; landscapes, macro, wildlife, etc. Each has they're own set of requirements, but the good news is that an 8 MP camera will probably cope quite well.

Since we might be conversing quite a bit, could I ask a first name and exactly which camera brand and model you have?

It will also be handy to know what level of knowledge you currently have; do you 'know nothing', or are you looking to 'get the facts correct' when explaining what you already have some knowledge and experience of?

When you reply, I may well copy this to the General Photography Discussion forum, in order to get better coverage.

In the meantime, you may also want to make a start reading the tutorials on this site*, but if you don't understand a bit, don't ignore it and push on, just ask. * You don't have to know them all

    Greetings from Ontario, Canada.

I’ve just joined and hope to get to know you all better as time goes by. Photography is a great hobby and I am working to get better at it. I am sure I will learn a lot from you guys. I enjoy nature photography, especially macro photography. I get up early on week-ends to catch the sunrise and take my walks by the lake. Having my camera with me makes my walks so much more enjoyable and gets me more in tune with the beauty of my surroundings.
I’ve been using a point and shoot Panasonic DMC FZ8 for (since 2007) and really enjoy it’s simplicity of use and getting good pictures. I ’ve just recently bought a DSLR, Canon EOS Rebel XSI with EF-S 18-55 IS lens which came with the kit, and now it’s a whole different ballgame. It’s no longer that easy and simple and I find my photos blurry and not anything to write home about. For one thing, it’s heavier than my Panasonic.
There’s so much to learn and I have yet to get a good shot with my new camera. Maybe I should just stick to my Panasonic.
    Have a good week-end, everyone.

    Hi Sarah,

Welcome to CiC - it's great to have you with us!

I've spent a few hundred hours flying general aviation type aircraft - the types you'll find at your local aeroclub; I'd love to fly an F/A-18 Hornet, but I suspect that my takeoffs and landing would be a bit hairy until I got the hang of it ... but when I DID get the hang of it, I wouldn't want to go back to general aviation ever again. And I suspect that you'll probably soon feel the same about using your XSI ... it's a more demanding camera that demands more from you, but once you learn to tame it, there will be no holding you back.

Jump right in - start a new thread - and show us some of your shots (both good and bad) - and we'll see how we can help

PS: What software do you have for post-processing?

I am so looking forward to the day I get this camera tamed. Right now I use Nero PhotoSnap or Microsoft Picture it 7. Not very savvy at this either although not totally illiterate. There's hope for me yet. Someday I'll be taking pictures like you have in your gallery....I wish!
It's 9:15 pm over here. What time is it in your neck of the woods? Should I say, have a good morning?

    Hi Sarah,

The longest journey begins with the first step - which you're already taken - so you're on your way already

The system at my end says you posted this at 1:20pm - and it's 4:40pm here now, so I imaging that it's 00:40am Sunday morning where you are at the moment.

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

I'm a college student in the US and have been trying to learn more about photography for the past 8 months or so. At the moment I'm mostly interested in nature & landscape photography. I have an Olympus e-620 with 2 lenses (olympus 40mm-150mm; and olympus 12mm-60mm). I'm not sure if this is the greatest equipment, but it's what I've got to start with.

One question that I have right off the bat is about post processing. I have zero experience with this but every time I load new pictures to my computer I wish I had some software to help me get them to where I want them. What's an inexpensive way to get started? I don't have $600 to drop on the newest photoshop.
