Equipments I use: Olympus E620, Oly ZD 14-54 f2.8-3.5 MKII, Oly ZD 50-200 f2.8-3.5 SWD, Oly ZD 50mm f2.0, Giottos MT8240B with Giottos MH652 ball head

Favourite Subjects (of Photography): almost all... Landscape, wildlife, macro, portrait, travel... so on

A Little Background: I am a software engineer in profession, but photography is my hobby and passion. I have started point and shoot photography with a Konica film camera when I was a kid, then a samsung film camera. But I started a bit serious photography when I moved to digital. I graduated to digital with Sony DSC H2 in September 2006. My first DSLR came in June 2008 and that was a Sony A200; but second one came quick - within a year or so and it was Olympus E620. Most of my photography knowledge are from internet, also got a lot of knowledge from this site and now wanted to get some views and ideas from photographers around the globe - and I am here.

What a great shot. It is very similar the Rainbow Bee-eater in Australia.

I like the shallow DOF and the background really compliments the bird. The placement of the bird is great and I love the use of negative space for the bird to look into. The only comment I would make is that the lower branch (which I don’t mind) is too close to the bottom of the image. If you were to print and frame this it would almost touch the mount board/frame and be distracting and this image needs to be printed and shown.

I'm from Washington in the great northwest USA. I've enjoyed taking pictures for years. I really started getting into it last summer when I took my camera off "auto", and started playing with different settings, and a whole new world opened up for me. My husband got me a nikon D5000 for Christmas and that has just added fuel to a growing fire. I have since purchased a tri-pod, remote shutter release, and the Nikon VR18-200 lense.

I found this site back in July when I was looking for info on how to shoot fireworks. I've visited the site many times since and finally decide to join. I can't afford to take classes so I've been learning from this site and an text book my daughter used when taking a photography class a few years ago in college. I look forward to getting some feed back on some of my photos and I can do to improve them (once I learn how to post them).

Welcome and very nice shot. Just wondering why the change in camera brands. When I purchased my first DSLR I gave myself three choices after doing my research (Canon, Nikon, and Sony). I sort of had a brand loyalty to Pentax as that was one of my first digital cameras but couldn't fine anything acceptable in a DSLR. I eventually went with Nikon based on favorable reviews, available and affordable lenses, and my comfort handling the camera when I eventually made my choice. What inspired you to make a change in brand?

When you get familiar with the site you must post some of your fireworks shots. We have a new member posting some underwater shots. As you will see we all like learning from each other so keep posting and ask plenty of questions – that’s how we all learn.

What inspired you to make a change in brand?

The plan to change the first one came because of two main issues I faced
- may be Sony A200 is good for bigginer but the settings and menu nevigation of the cam is not at all good
- choice of pro lens is very limited and Carl Zeiss is not realistically priced compared to their performance (at least on paper).

so my idea of a new SLR was mainly Nikon D90 and Canon 500D. when I was reading about them, I thought why not try what Olympus and Pentax has to offer. Pentax was out of question after a small research not due to its capability but future support point of view because eventually I will be in India and Pentax service is not matured here. In case of Olympus, their stories about how E serise camera and lenses were developed and evolved, also some pro photographers' (who are using Oly) writing inspired me the most. Then comes price factor compared to Nikon/Canon cameras and pro lenses and equally performance that I have seen in forums and the guy from Jacobs(UK) who allowed me to test the camera helped me to take the decision to change the brand and settled for Olympus.

Funny thing is, when I bought Sony A200 (I went for that blindly bcoz of their brand name), Jacobs showed me Olympus (E520) but I did not even bothered to take the camera in my hand

Welcome to C in C forums. I don't think there is another member from Malaysia at the moment. It is good to have another country of the world represented amongst those who participate.

I have never been to Malaysia, but my partner joined friends in Pulau Langkawi 2 years ago and went sailing for 3 weeks. Her photographs show how beautiful the coastline and islands are.

Hi everybody, my name is Mike. I discovered this thread recently and was happy to join. I will, probably, have plenty of questions in due course. Love reading other people questions and replies, I always find something I wanted to know about. I have had a digital camera (Nikon D60 and, now, D90 with 18-55 VR & 55-70 VR kit lenses) for two years. At the moment looking at Nikkor 10-24 f3.5-4.5. Obsessed with sharpness for some reason. Don't seem to be able to take many sharp photos (looking at my LCD and zoomed in to max, is that being fussy?). Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike,

Zooming in on the camera's LCD is defintiely not recommended for judging 'sharp enough', I have a Nikon, (a D5000) and the amount of zoom on the viewfinder is enormous, to help you find best focus (especially in Live View) or when chimping. Zoomed right in, all pictures will look soft in my experience.

Far better to download to a PC, follow a good PP workflow from RAW (not jpg) and this must include 2 or 3 sharpening steps*. Then let us see the results and we can advise whether there is a real problem.

* One of these sharpening steps must be after downsizing to say 700, or 1200 pixels on longest side for posting here.

Our other admin/moderator; Colin, has written much on sharpening - if you need more help with that, I can provide a link.

So glad to find this wonderful forum... it hooked me instantly!
Found that I'm in a great and smart society here; would you accept me in even when I'm a dilettante. My camera is Canon Power Shot SX100 IS. I'm very pleased with it and not going to buy any expensive SLR - not at least in the near future. I think there's enough studying my existing camera. I'ts good in shooting little insects, birds or other flying objects, in my opinion. Just I'd like to have a little more pixels - for to take macros and print them.

Please forgive my poor English; hope you understand my thougths, cause you seem to be so smart...

Your English is fine, as is the camera, I spent a year here with something similar, before I eventually got a DSLR.
