Hello everyone, Having just joined I introduce myself with some trepidation and apprehension! I am a retired academic (social sciences) who has returned to photography after a substantial interval and hoping to learn from the expertise, skills, and creativity of the members of this forum. I'm more interested in the compositional aspects of photography than the technical although I've become aware of how greater technical proficiency can enhance compositional skills. I particularly like "street photography and/or reportage" (sadly, as we've seen recently in the campaign there is much greater sensitivity about public photography than there used to be. In addition I'm interested in landscape photography. I have a great enthusiasm for black and white photography although I work also in colour. The photographers I most admire are Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Eugene Smith, Ansel Adams, Jane Bown and Don McCullin. So, I'm looking forward to hearing from members as time goes on. Warmest regards to all, John

Hi there John, and a warm welcome to CiC. Looks as if you have come to the right forum (we are all intelligent, good-looking, and wizards at photography.)

We tend to exaggerate too. Just post shots, ask questions in a new thread, or comment on others.

Hey everyone. My name is Kris and I live in Houston, TX. I'm just getting started with digital SLR photography, and I'm looking forward to not only taking pictures, but learning about how to improve upon my technique in composition and post processing. I'm starting out with a Nikon D3000 and I'm waiting on my first non-kit lens to deliver: a 35 mm prime AF-S. I'm looking forward to reading your posts and contributing where I can. Cheers!

    Hi Phuong,

    Your English is fine.

That's quite a spread of lenses you have there, you must be ready for almost anything

We have a couple of Panasonic G1 owners here already - so it would be great to see some shots from the GF1.

    Hi Kris,

Warm welcome to another Nikon owner from me, what sort of things are you going to capture with 35mm?

Thanks Colin! Hopefully I won't take too long to start posting!

P.S. You have an outstanding collection. My daughter was watching over my shoulder and her favorite is "All you need is Love!".

    Cheers,

    Kris

Hi Dave, thanks for the welcome! For now I think I'm going to be trying to test the limits of what I can do indoors in low light situations. Its a pretty fast lens so I wanted to see what I can achieve using low ISO. And then I think I'll try to find and shoot some interesting landscapes, which will be a tad more difficult to find here in Houston than Windsor or New Zealand (Colin)!

Hi, I'm Soma from the northwest lower penninsula of Michigan.
I first came upon this site last December when I got my Canon xsi 450D but haven't visited it much since then. I've been lurking here more often the past couple of weeks. Now that I've been using this camera for 10 months or so I am starting to get an inkling about how very little I know about photography. I find this awfully encouraging because I was beginning to feel satisfied with some of the photos I've taken and now after seeing what's going on here I can see that if I pay attention and learn more they'll only improve.
Something I've been thinking about a lot lately is how much of a correlation there is between photogrpahy and writing/recording music (my main hobby). When first beginning to record it was pretty natural to over do the FX and settle for murky mixes and come close but not quite close enough to music I have in my head.
After putting in countless hours I can see a steady improvement and the same goes for photography; what I thought was a great shot last winter looks nowhere near as nice now. And after looking at some of the photos posted here I can see how far I have to go. This is going to be fun.

Hi Soma, and a warm welcome to CiC. It can be a frustrating business getting good at photography, and it does take time. In my case I was lucky to have lots of time available, but I know it can be difficult when you have other committments. I'm sure you will find it supportive and helpful here.

Greetings. I'm not new to photography (film since '80s; digital since 2000), shoot Nikon DSLRs, love to get lost in Photoshop (after work's done). My passion is COLOR—how to manage it from pixel (camera and/or monitor) to print (rgb or cmyk). Just got high-end monitor, now hope to post questions on how others work in color-managed work flows. Work currently in Macintosh environment but comfortable in PC.

    Hi Jerry,

Great to have you with us.

Do you have a copy of the colour management bible?; Real World Color Management, 2nd edition, by Fraser, Murphy, and Bunting? If not then you need to grab one and work through it ... there is literally no substitute.

What model Eizo monitor did you get?
