Why not take a few minutes to briefly introduce yourself as a new member, but please do not post images for comment in this thread - it's just for introductions. You are welcome to post one image to demonstrate your photography style.

It can be confusing joining a new forum. The following information may help you in getting established here. We know you want to get started, but reading this will help you get started properly.

POSTING IMAGES - For technical advice on posting photos, please read this excellent guide How can I post images here? It tells you all you need to know.

VIEWING IMAGES - If you are looking for help on viewing images on this site then try here... HELP THREAD: Viewing images on this forum

YOUR WEBSITE -If you have your own photo website or Flickr page you may put a link to it in your forum signature (see mine below for example). You can also introduce other members to your site in This thread here

LOCATION - Put yourself on our members map on Google. But please check the security aspects when you do this CiC Google map

CONDUCT - The general emphasis here is on support and learning. To do that, we often give detailed criticism on shots, where people have asked for it. We always try to do that in a fair, polite, and balanced manner. We also have a lot of fun on here, making humorous comments with one another. But again, it's nearly always done in a friendly manner, softened with the use of smilies.

If you follow the above guidelines you won't go far wrong. We rarely have a problem with things that are said on-line. However, the Admin/Mod group monitor all activity on this site, and any inappropriate comment will be removed or edited. We urge all new members to read carefully the Code of Conduct FAQ which can be found here... Code of Conduct FAQ

NAMES - It's more friendly if you put your first name in your profile so that it appears on your posts. Select 'forum action/edit profile' from the menu at the top of the page. 'Real name' is at the bottom of the page. We suggest that for security reasons you only use your first name.

TUTORIALS - Try our famous tutorials, especially if you have a specific or general technical question. See the menu at the top of the page.

POSTING - Just start a new thread to ask a new question/start a discussion/post your images, but please give some thought to starting it in the correct section. Or just reply to existing threads to join in with a discussion that is in progress. If you are doubtful about posting your work, then please read this Posting image for comment and criticism The FAQ (on menu above) will give you general assistance if you have difficulty FAQ forum usage

Still stuck? Don't worry, just send a PM (Personal Message) to one of the Admin/Mods. You can find them here Mods To get to this list normally, select 'quick links/view forum Moderators'. As you move your mouse over a name a 'PM' button will appear. Click it for the Mod you want and send your PM.

Hi my name is Jim, about 6 Years ago while living in a beautiful part of Devon I bought a Panasonic FZ-30. A DSLR seemed a little daunting for a pastime. I have lived in Thailand for the past 4 years and now a Canon DSLR is on my shopping list (as soon as I can justify the money!) I'm certainly no expert in photography which is how I found CIC, for advice and guidance. An excellent site, great encouragement, and the tutorials have made understanding enjoyable. Thanks

You are most welcome as a member of CiC. There are now a significant number of people from France who are members of CIC.

Reading the rest of this message will help you get the most out of the site.

If you haven't already done so, please be sure to read post #1 of this thread HERE. There are links in that post to other helpful advice and guidance. Also our Code of Conduct in the FAQ HERE

CiC is a resource strongly focused towards learning, no matter what your current level of knowledge, skills and experience. As well as these forums, where you can engage in discussion, ask questions and seek comment and criticism on your pictures, CiC has a comprehensive range of tutorials that, by common consent, are amongst the most sensible and straightforward that you can find anywhere. Remember to have a look on the tutorials and techniques pages which you can access from the menu bar.

And finally, the Mod team thought it might be a useful addition to CiC to have in-house access to some selected video tutorials. You can find them in the Community Lounge forum under 'Photography Video Tutorials'.

    Welcome, Jim.

Thanks for the tutorials are due entirely to Sean (McQ) whose site this is. They are good, aren't they! The forums aim to support the tutorials in terms of encouraging learning and I hope you find them useful, as well as being a lot of fun. Informality (and irreverence from time to time) tends to be the overarching rule.

    Hi Folks,

I just joined the forum. I was heavily into photography (not professionally) back in the 70s era of film cameras. I had my own darkroom for black and white photography including an enlarger. About a year ago I started getting the itch for photography again so after having two P&S cameras I'm looking to purchase my first DSLR. My main interests are outdoor photography including landscapes, macros and just photographing people in outdoor settings (especially my beautiful niece who's also my goddaughter).
With our short summers in Minnesota, I like to be outdoors as much as I can so photography will be another excuse to get outside.

    Thanks for listening.

    Ed

Hello, My name is BJ Denning. I'm completely new to Photography, at least anything more than the point and shoot. I recently purchased a Cannon 550D DSLR, with the 18-55mm kit lens and a 55-250mm second lens. I've enjoyed the tutorials and techniques articles, however I will probablly have to read them several more times before then stick. I especially like the critiques of member photos, they are constructive and very educational -- I've already started to pay more attention to the details (lighting, DOF, temperature, etc.).

And you've gone straight in and flagged yourself up on the Google Map, which is great. For a while we had a big gap between the east and west coast of the US, but that's now starting to fil up.

    A big welcome onto CiC.

Hello, my name is Peter. I live near Winkleigh in Devon, UK. My Christmas present to me was a Nikon D700 with a 50mm F1.8 lens. Post-processing of images is new to me, and I have a lot to learn. My style? If I see a picture, I'll take it. I do not follow any paricular theme. For example, yesterday, my wife brought home a cabbage, it looked nice so I took a photograph.

    Regards, Peter.

PS. In theory there should be a link to a Flickr page in the above text.

    Hi,
    Happy New Year to all!
    I am newbie. Self-learning. Equipment:Basic P&S
Photography is my passion of years....I get tremendous joy while photographing, adding captions to photos, making albums with brief descriptions, making e-greetings of photo, making movie of video clips (of my own photos & videos only)

For me, Photos of others and critiques and comments by all of you, is biggest source of learning

I have started with adding small album 'Natural Salt Making"...

    Regards,
    Rachana

    Hi Rachana,

As you ably demonstrate (I had a peek); a basic P&S, in talented hands, is no handicap to good photography.

For serious C&C, I'd suggest you start a thread in the Nature and Architecture forum and either lift a few pictures for special attention, or put the album link there. Step 14 onwards here will show you how to do the inline image from an album link.

Do also be sure to read post #1 which will help you get started here in the forums. If you're unclear on forum ettiquette; there is a Code of Conduct in the FAQ HERE

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi all, My name is Paul. First let me say you all have some very nice photos here. I started into photography in school back in about 1985 and life got busy fast which caused me to become more snapshot orientated useing a PS. For the last 15 yrs I have been a vintage/antique toy marble collector and thus needed to take photos of them. This has fueled the flame for photography that has been an itch for some time. I recently came across a deal that provided me with a Sony A-100 and the kit lenses, 75-300 and 18-70. I knew I would need a tri-pod and purchased a Manfrotto and coupled it with a Giotto 1300 ball head. Of course next was a flash and remote shutter release. Unfortunately the 180mm Macro has to wait a while.
I see at least one of you will be happy to know I am useing "The Gimp" for PP, which I am very new to. I am only now beginning to shoot Raw instead of Jpeg. I have learned much from my time lurking but felt it was time to get a little more up to spee, so to speak. I look forward to further learning and to any and all comments which my photos may garner.

    Have a great day,
    Paul

He is! Don't know if you've discovered Rolf Steinhort's visual tutorials here. I think they're the best way of learning The GIMP

Hi, my name is Shawnda and I hail from the Dallas, Tx., U.S. of A., Planet Earth, the Milky Way Galaxy, and the location where some aliens would probably call us over bearing and egotistical, but it's my home

I have always had an interest in photography. I have slowly been getting into it. My father had a dark room when he was a kid in the attic of my grandparents house. He has an eye for pictures too, which is where I think I acquired it.

I am shooting with a Nikon D40 with the kit lens.

I think I am going to be enjoying and posting a lot in CiC, as you folks seem very knowledagable!

Hello, call me Phil. I enjoy my photography and others though i don't do as much as i should. Not very technically minded but understand the concepts.I feel like i am stuck in the dark age with all this digital. As i am strongly attached to my old Pentax ME and lenses i have built up over the years and been on many travels together. The thought of starting again in digital and the cost does daunt me. Should i worry?

Hello, just joined and look forward to learning some new skills and approaches from what is obviously a very well informed site and community... I am from UK and now living in China. I shoot with a 5D2 and 50D and have a few lenses in various stages of having been dropped.
