Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi All,

I'm Mitch, I've been practicing photography for about 6 months or so. At some times wishing I chose another hobby that was cheaper, though having people be slightly awe-struck by something you have created always seems to make it worth it, I just wish I had more cash to throw around but that's something that everyone wants!

At the moment I'm using a Canon 400D, main lens being a EFS-17-85 IS, it's quite a step up from the kit 18-55 I was using. A EF 135 2.8 Soft Focus, it may be an old lens but it's still razor sharp although a little slow, I really need to practice some portraiture or something to make keeping this thing worthwhile...

I love doing night macro photography, though I only have extension tubes at the moment, Macro lens will come soon enough! Still trying to find my niche I guess, though I would prefer to be good at everything

I guess from here on I'll be chasing a decent tele lens, macro lens and a newer / new body.

Been lurking for a while and decided I should register as some of the info here has been pretty invaluable.

    Cheers all,

    Mitch.

    Hi John,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me, good to have another Nikon shooter to even things up a bit with the 'Canonites'

Film experience must help, you're going to understand the basics of exposure I guess - apart from being able to 'change the film' (iso) with the press of a few buttons

Also, the concepts of composition will presumably be known to most film shooters - as many of us here are, although with usually a large time elpsed between film and digital.

However, the whole PP thing, plus getting the best of camera LCD screens, histograms, etc. will be completely new

Anyway, enough waffle from me, I look forward to seeing a new post from you soon, be it a question or a picture.

    All the best,

    Hi Abdul,

By all means make the most of us - and the easiest way is just to ask questions; what could be simpler?

If it isn't too personal a question, what did you used to do? ("semi-retired")
I think photography is a good thing to take up.

If I may ask one more question; where in the world are you? (just city/region and country is fine)

    Hi Mitch,

If you want to make the most of portraits (and you haven't already seen this), do have a look at 'our' Colin's; School of Portraiture - Links to Lessons 1 through 8

"Night macro" sounds intriguing, do post a picture for us soon.

Hi my name is Chris and I live in Marlow, Buckinghamshire on the banks of the River Thames approximately 30 miles west of London, England. I have been into digital photography for the last seven years, my first camera being Canon 300D, which I still have as a backup. In 2006 I upgraded to a Canon 30D, which is still my principal camera. My principal interest is landscape photography, which has taken me to Devon and Cornwall in the West Country, Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia in Wales and the Highlands of Scotland. This year I hope to spend time on Dartmoor and Exmoor and the Lake District.

    Hi All,

Im Raf, photography has been my new obsession. Originally, i only wanted a good enough camera for photo editing, getting in to post secondary graphic design programs. a bit over a year later, i didnt even pursue that program and the photography stuck around. now, i dont really like the label "photographer" until im content with what im putting out...so, i hope to stick around to learn more from the seasoned photographers in this forum!

PS my gear only consist of the Canon 1000d and Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 MACRO OS HSM DC
occasionally pulling out the (broken front element) 50mm f/1.8

Raf - that's an excellent position to be in for a member of CiC. You are very welcome.

Sounds too that you have the correct attitude in terms of pushing yourself to continually improve. I hope (think) you will find that CiC is a good resource to support you in that - both in terms of the tutorials, but also the discussions that take place on here and the willingness of those seasoned (sounds much nicer than 'old', doesn't it?) 'togs on here to share their knowledge and experience.

Now that you're 'on the inside', I hope you post up some images and join in discussions. Please fire away with any questions to which you've not found answers in the tutorials.
Hi Donald, thanks for the welcome. I love Scotland, spend most of my holidays up there, Shetland most of all.

That is a beauty. You should get it into one of the competition threads or post it up as a new thread in Nature & Architecture inviting comments.

It's great to have you here as part of CiC and I hope we will see your pictures and that you join in discussions and ask lots of questions.

Hi, I'm Sue. I have been lurking for awhile and now have time to post. I'm most interested in critiques because I'm finding that stuff I do I really like, others don't . I think I'm getting trapped in the love of taking the image, and being in some great places, and becoming overwhelmed with the scene. Maybe I'm seeing and feeling what I felt when I took the image but can't get that feeling out there. I also love a little competition. Is there somehere here that critiques the images from the mini competitions?

    Welcome to the club!

If you want to look at them, Rolf Steinort's series of video tutorials are here. But don't try and start and #1 and work through to #155 (or whatever he's at now). Have a look at the contents and take one 'subject' at a time.

    Have fun!

Sue - Always delighted when a lurker converts and becomes full-blown member! So you're very, very welcome.

I think I'm getting trapped in the love of taking the image, and being in some great places, and becoming overwhelmed with the scene. Maybe I'm seeing and feeling what I felt when I took the image but can't get that feeling out there.
That, as far as I'm concerned, is good. You're feeling the image. Okay, you need to be able to manage what you feel about a scene and begin to translate that into what it's going to look like in your finished image. But, the skill to translate that emotion into the image you create can be learned. What can't be taught is the ability to 'feel' that emotion in the first place. So, you're more than halfway there already.

I also love a little competition. Is there somehere here that critiques the images from the mini competitions?
Folks are free (and encouraged) to post images into the 'commentary' threads as well as into the competitions. Over the last couple of months, the competition threads have taken off with a lot of people just focusing their attention in them, which is a bit unfortunate. The rate of turnover on them now is about 4 or 5 times what it used to be (I know I can't keep up and am missing seeing a lot of very, very good images).

ps - It would be good if you edited your profile and put your name under 'Real Name'. That way it will appear alongside each of your posts and folks will know how to address you (as you'll have seen, we tend top go with proper names on the site).

Tom - a very warm welcome.

To that end, please feel that you can, if you wish, post up any questions in the knowledge that you'll get an informed response from one or more of the members. In the same vein, I hope you feel that you can comment and give your view in discussions in the knowledge that it will be welcomed and respected.
