In the case of virtual copies, unless the original and copies are collapsed into a stack, the copies will appear next to the original in the grid view and the film strip. I'm not sure about this, but isn't it true that smart previews don't appear separately next to the originals? If that's true, it should be easy to figure out which these are.

I don't use smart previews either. They are essentially a large jpg thumbnail, 2540 px on the long side, that LR let you edit if the original is not available. When you plug in the external drive with the original, the edits are applied automatically to the original. I believe that it is possible to export the thumbnail as a jpg if you lose the original.

I think that you and Dan are referring to two different things when you talk about "virtual copy". I believe that you are actually talking about "smart previews" which can be generated automatically upon importing if the appropriate checkbox is checked. Smart previews can be edited if the original file is on an external drive that isn't connected to the computer at the time.
Thanks André, you are right, it is smart previews I was alluding to. I may have sent the discussion off on a tangent: eek:

Sorry everyone, I miss- spoke. It was smart previews I was referring to. Lightroom will let you use those for editing if it cant find the originals. But it wont allow you to use the 'edit in Adobe Photoshop ' selection to move the smart previews to Photoshop for editing. At the time I did not realise I was using these smart previews: I was in a collection in which there were several photos that Lr could not find. So whenever I tried the 'edit in Photoshop' selection, if I switched to another photo ,it often was a another one that Lr could not find ,so the selection would not work. It took me a while to realise what was happening and a lot longer to locate the originals . Sorry for the misdirection. Thanks for your help.
