Problems with AF-P Nikkor 70-300 1:4.5-6.3G ED and Nikon D5300

I own a Nikon D5300 and just bought me the Nikkor AF-P 1:4.5-6.3G ED lens (DX format, no VR), because this lens is supposed to be compatible with my camera. I updated the firmware of my camera an put on the new lens. However, the lens doesn't seem to auto focus. I double-checked on the Nikon USA website, and this lens is allegedly 100% compatible with my camera. I am not sure, if I am doing something wrong, or if this could be a sign that the lens is defective. I am pretty new to all this and would appreciate if someone could help me out.
I did a google search about this, but didn't come up with anything. Thank you in advance

When I looked up the lens, it seems it is only partially compatible with your camera body. I've been shooting Nikon for over 11 years, but have not used one of the newer P lenses.

It seems you may have to update the camera's firmware before the lens will work on it.

Yes, it is vital to have the latest firmware installed but the OP says he updated the firmware. May be worth checking that the update did install correctly. Also, just in case something else went awry, restore the camera to factory settings, check AF with a non-P lens, then try again.
