ND filters and f-stops!

Hello everyone!

I have a newbie question for you guys, I´m a little confused! This may sound very stupid!

First of all, let´s say I´m shooting video and I don´t want to change the shutter speed at all, I will let it in 1/50. I want to control the exposure using ND filters instead of changing the aperture. Now the question is: ND filters will reduce f stops, what about the one-half stops or the one-third stops?

Let´s say the camera will tell me that an f8 will be adequate to get a properly exposure (for example), and let´s say the camera is right. I want to use an f4 to have more control on depth of field so an ND4 will be good. But what happen if I want to use an f4.8?

Possibly a good solution would be to use a Singh-Ray Vari-ND ND filter. It's not calibrated in stops (although you could do so), but it is continuously adjustable between 2 and 8 stops.
