Pesuta Wreak - Series of 5 Images

I've been working in the images I captured of the Pesuta wreck that I posted here recently ( Pesuta Wreck ). I've taken the images and am planning to do a set of five prints. There is a 6th image I haven't worked on yet, but might add it to the series.

Nice series Manfred, you certainly worked the subject during your short time at the site.

    A very interesting series.

If I remember the earlier post correctly, you've opened up the tonal range in the wood, which I think is an improvement.

Of the set, I think #4 doesn't reach the level of the others. Despite the hole, which I assume is supposed to serve as the principle focus, it doesn't seem to me that it has much of a central focus. Of the other 4: I think #3 is the most interesting, although I'm not sure which of the 4 I would put on the wall.

I still think the clouds detract in #1. They provide a big, high-contrast area on the periphery, which I find draws my eye, and it's not interesting detail. I would still lighten that and crop a bit. I think i would probably lighten them in #5 as well.

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

Dan - you've identified some of what I consider to be problematic in the set as well. The sky was plain weird and fast moving during the visit.

This is the original of #5; the sky was so bad that I did a sky replacement.

#4 was approach that I have used successfully in another set I did where I went from quite wide to some detailed work. I personally prefer what this looks like in colour. This is the image I was looking at replacing, but have not made up my mind on which way to go.

in #1, the clouds are less of an issue in the colour version as the colour contrast works fairly effectively. Much of the rust-coloured staining that can be seen in the colour images is rust from the metal parts of the ship, especially from the nails that hold the wooden planks together.

    Manfred,

I think we are on precisely the same page. In #1, the color contrast works well to pull the viewer's eye. In the B&W version, you've lost that, and the clouds on the edge are more of a competitor.

Re #4: I very much prefer the color version.

I wonder if the sky would have been a candidate for smoothing with long or multi exposure in this instance?

Possibly, but it's a look I tend to not like. Even when I do a long exposure on water, I will generally take a short exposure shot of the same scene and craft that into the final image. I tend to go for highly textured skies.

Interesting set. I find the structure of the third particularly appealing.

In Image 2 the initials carved into the wood on the RHS are distracting to me. Brings me out of the moment. Really like no 4. Not sure why.

    Thanks for the comment Paul.

My original version of #2 had the obvious graffiti removed, but I ended up going back to the version with it. While it is a minor distraction (in fact, there are lots of initials carved into the wood), I found it helped halt the viewer's eye from sliding off the page with the lighter coloured wood.

This is the graffiti free version. I find it seems to be missing something.

Wow a great series and the compositions, details and the varied tones are simply fantastic. I love the subject matter and the work you carefully put into it, the perfectionist is in your blood and runs so well.
