Like Richard, I have been using Sandisk and Lexar for at least the past 10 years and those cards continue to work well.
I agree: I would never use a memory card that seemed to malfunction. You can get a 64 GB SD card for $11. Not worth the risk.
A couple of weeks ago, the thumb drive I use to sync between my computers showed an error and had to be repaired by windows when I plugged it into one of the computers. It seemed to work fine after the repair, and I suspect that I caused the fault by pulling it before the OS had fully ejected it, but I immediately ordered a replacement and threw out the old one.
I've been using only SanDisk CF and SD cards for years and have never had a failure. The only problem is that they are so reliable that I don't think about replacing old ones when I probably should.

I don't always do this but, it is recommended that you close down the memory stick prior to removing it from the computer. I have an Icon which allows safe removal of the memory:

I do. In this one case, I thought the problem might have been my pulling it out before that process had finished, but the thumb drive was already a few years old, and it wasn’t worth the risk.

Thanks for the link, Ted.
The deterioration modelling resonates with this old poster.
