New Transparent Layer No Longer Appears

I've just noticed that something seems to have changed when I first add a new photoshop layer after the background layer. In the past it seems I remember that when I clicked on the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel, the new layer would appear as a transparent (checkerboard) layer. Now that no longer happens - I just get a normal blank new layer. And I can't figure out how to make a new transparent layer show up. It's probably simple but at the moment I'm stumped. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you changed something in your preferences?

I'd start by checking the Preferences under the "Transparency & Gamut" option.

Fixed, Manfred ! The "none" box was checked, so I'm assuming it really was transparent but I didn't realize it. Thank you!

I'm not sure which version of Photoshop you are using, but CC 2020 does not have a "none" box.

I suspect that you are right; the layer was a traditional blank layer, but the symbol was not what you were expecting.

I'm on 2019 and it has a "none" box for grid size and that's what was checked, so the layer looked pure white.
