Wonderful creations of the tiny world!!! Great capture!!!
Nice one Les. I enjoy the way that your posts mix in the unexpected I've never heard of a scorpion fly, far less seen one!
That is a female with a fairly straight red tail. Males have a large capsule on the end of their abdomen which curls upwards and looks a bit like a scorpion tail. Hence their common name.
Geoff, are you an entomologist or a keen enthusiast in the field? be either way, great knowledge
Neither, Nandakumar - just great reference books.
Actually, after retiring about 10 years ago, I started photographing and recording much of the local wildlife; particularly insects because nobody else does them. We have plenty of uncommon species around here but there are few dots on the maps because nobody has ever bothered to search and record around here. Lots of insect groups which I totally ignore though. Many of them are a real struggle even with a dead specimen and a microscope.
