    Help from Smugmug users

If you use Smugmug under Windows, can you please look at your site and see whether the link for getting a link to a photo has vanished?

It vanished from my site last night, when I had done nothing to change the site. I simply went on to get a link, and the icon had vanished. I tried two computers and three browsers, including Firefox in safe mode, and it had vanished in every case. Smugmug staff still haven't figured this out, as they can see the link when they log in as me. So to help figure this out, I would like to find out if anyone else is having this problem.

    Thanks

    Dan

    Re: Help from Smugmug users

Lets see if this works I have found the same problem with my smugmug collection.

    Help from Smugmug users

This is a PITA work around...

FIRST OFF: AN OLD NAVY SAYING, "IT IT AIN'T BROKE - DON'T FIX IT!" Obviously smugmug.com never heard of this saying!

There was no icon that I use when I want to copy an image as a link. I clicked on the image that I wanted a link to. Then there was a share icon top right which I clicked on to give me a share icon at the left - that allowed me one try at sharing one image. i could not share more than one image his way and had no size choice.

I certainly hope that this is not what I will have to live with... If it is - I WILL HAVE TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER DUMPING SMUGMUG...

    Re: Help from Smugmug users

I did a google site for smugmug help and was directed to a answer site that required payment.

Here is from the smugmug help site: https://help.smugmug.com/share-my-photos-SJ4mxxD1NHM

    Share a link.
Want to post a link anywhere and everywhere? Here’s an easy way to grab the link to paste into an email, another website, a blog, a forum, or anywhere else you might want.

First, navigate to the photo you want to share and click the Share icon located below your photo. For some gallery styles, you might need to click a photo to enter Lightbox mode, first, in order to see the Share icon in the left-hand sidebar.

You'll see four tabs (or three, if you don’t have buying photos enabled), each with different types of links that you can get.

    Choose the Photo tab.

Copy and paste the top Photo Link if you want your visitors to be taken to your photo in Lightbox view on your site.

Or click on any tab below to grab an automagically generated shareable link for embedding! You can grab a link for your Photo Only, HTML code for placing on your blog or elsewhere, or BBCode for sharing on a forum.

Select how big you want your shared photo to be from the Size dropdown menu in order to share an embeddable photo.

Select the right code for your intended share location, and then copy and paste it where you want to share it (in a blog post, on your Facebook wall, in an email, a forum, etc.).

Copying is done by holding down the CTRL key, then hitting the C key, or Command-C on Mac.

Pasting is done by holding down the CTRL key, then hitting the V key, or Command-V on Mac.

    Share a gallery or slideshow.
You can share a direct link to your gallery easily, too! In the Share panel, first select the Gallery tab.

Copy and paste the top Gallery Link if you want your visitors to be taken directly to your gallery on your site.

Want to really make a splash? Share a slideshow of your gallery! Navigate to the gallery you want to showcase and select any photo to bring up the Lightbox.

Click the Share icon, just like you’d do for sharing a link (detailed above). Next, select the Gallery tab. You’ll see two slideshow options to choose from: Fullscreen and Embed.

Select Fullscreen and copy-paste the generated code if you want to wow your visitors with a full-screen slideshow of your gallery.

To embed a beautiful slideshow on your blog, another website, or anywhere else, select the Embed tab. Tick the checkbox next to any options you want to be included with your embeddable slideshow: auto-start, captions, navigation, or play button. Here you can also tweak the speed at which your slideshow plays, the transition type between photos, and the transition speed.

We’ll automatically update the HTML code for your slideshow as you select your options.

Once you’ve got everything tweaked to your liking, simply copy the code and paste it into your blog post, website, or wherever else you like.

    Richard,

What I saw is something entirely new, not a matter of their standard procedures. The share icon simply didn't appear anymore.

I have been having a long interchange with Smugmug folks. It appears to be a Windows problem. The link button is actually there but doesn't show. if you move the cursor where it belongs, it will turn into a finger, and if you click at that point, you get a share dialog. Problem is that it is not the usual share dialog. They replaced the share dialog with a new one, and that apparently caused the problem.

They were only made aware of this last night--I was apparently the first to write to them, and it didn't get bounced up to the more senior people until this morning--so it may take a bit to get it fixed, but they are on it.

    Help from Smugmug users

Seems to work - the cursor turns into a finger when it is over the ares in which the icon was seen.

    Help from Smugmug users

Clicking there I get a menu enabling me to choose EMBED or LINK

Choosing EMBED gives me a choice size and enables me to COPY JPEG URL

Not as easy and slick as before but workable - thanks for finding a solution!

Dan, I can't see anything different on my site but am confused as to exactly what link you are referring to. If I want to get a 'Link' I just right click on any image and the box appears as in the example below.

    Grahame,

I can't show you a screen shot because it isn't working at the moment. However, when you are logged in, you should see a small rectangular icon immediately to the left of the wrench at the bottom of the photo. This is only visible to the owner of the site when logged in. It allows you to get a link to the image, while specifying the size that will show up. It's not visible to anyone else.

The Smugmug team has figured out (more or less) what went wrong. They just redesigned the image sharing dialog, and something in that redesign conflicts with Windows, making the icon not appear. If you mouse over where it should be, the cursor will change to a finger, and clicking then will bring up the dialog. They are working now on fixing this.

What you are getting by right clicking on the image is different and is available to anyone. You can turn this off in the gallery or site settings.

    Re: Help from Smugmug users

thanks for posting. I checked all three browsers I use, and it's there on all of them.

However, in checking, I realized that I had been inconsistent. You can control whether the public can see this and use it to get a link. The option is Customize/Gallery settings/social/show sharing options. I found now that over the years, I had been inconsistent. I had turned this off entirely in some galleries, while in others, I turned it on but capped the size (Photo protection/ Maximum display size at "XL" , 0.7 MP. The size limit was to discourage theft. For the moment, I have turned it off consistently, but I have to decide whether there is a reason to allow people to link to small images.

For private galleries, I have it set so people can download whatever they want, including the full-size JPEG.
