    Alone no more

I have been photographing this solitary tree for many years, it's an iconic landmark, photographed by many and the background of numerous 'selfies' I see taken there.

Some months back the 'plant mangroves to save the coast and get our picture in the paper mob' decided it needed company. Unfortunately they did not consider these mangroves will totally hide it eventually and also capture floating rubbish.

This has been my first chance to capture it since the planting, unfortunately the wrong time of day but more planned.

Interesting story ... Any idea why so many and why so close, Grahame?

No idea at all Ted. Perhaps they thought many may not survive and thin themselves out, but I doubt it

The area has a substantial concrete sea wall with path and picnic tables and not suffered any erosion and loss over the years that I have noticed. It's the only large expanse of very gently sloping hard sand open shore near our city that with the tide out is used by thousands of people for recreational purposes. They have planted far more just away from these.

Unfortunately 'Climate Change' is good for publicity and you get yourself more noticed and it's much easier if you do something where it can be seen easily, rather than where it would actually be beneficial.

If I can get one of the shots I took today to look decent I may attempt to get my rant in the press here

Lovely image; gives a feeling of relaxation....
A good candidate (more close up) for a vertical shot too...

    Thanks Nandakumar.

If I were to go "more close up" it would lose my intent of this image which was to show how the solitary tree has been imposed on by this single group of close planting. A vertical would be possible but perhaps leave the subjects too small within the framing but I'll take one next session.

    Thanks Ole.

I have an early morning attempt planned for this Saturday, if the weather is suitable. The tide will reach the base of the tree at 5.30 am, sunrise is at 6.35 am and I estimate about 40 minutes working time with the tide coming in.

Today I had another play from beach level but unfortunately wind and bird activity did not allow any long exposures.

I thought initially that cropping the image so that the tree was less central would improve it. I even had a go to find out. In my view the crop did not help at all. The original picture with clear water at both sides of the vegetation reinforces the "isolation".

I agree Peter. There's two images that convey a different story.
